Ego, friendship, uncertainty, risk, riches, debt, poverty, love, duty, envy, hate, justice, lose, gain, etc...still couldn't work out why he needed to borrow money to see his lover? Their is more to this than just a love story. Their is a hint of politics embedded in it I.e. Persia, African prince (Morocco), the Jewish money lender, Venice (the capital of banking and surgery/medicine in medeval Europe) before Italy was born. You can see within the story a tag of war between the economic players between the Mediterranean states with the winner shown to be venice as the richest outside of babylon, Persia as the previously richest; the new centre of alchemy and finance with judicial balance between property rights and justice.
I’m so glad someone could see these stories for what they really are, beyond the simplistic ‘tell’ like storytelling. You even opened my eyes to new perspectives. When I was younger reading this story, all I could think about was ‘wow, Europe really was xenophobic towards the Jews even in the medieval era’. This story wouldn’t see the day of light if it was written today, since it definitely have an ‘anti-Semitic’ theme. Stories like this throughout the centuries probably contributed to the Holocaust in WWII. And of course, the story could well be the representation of the time’s economic and political players, as you said. The funny thing is, it’s claimed that Shakespeare have never been to Italy at the time of writing these stories - so there must be a reason he chose Italy as the center for his stories. (Probably because Rome was the last European civilization and excellence at his time, and since Europe was barely out of the dark ages he was probably projecting for the rejuvenation of Europe as Venice/Italy at its center). These works of Shakespeare were translated from an abridged version so they don’t hold the full weight of the message but I think (and hope) they can be used as an introduction. What make it semi political for me is that Shakespeare as the number one story writer of the English Elizabethan era is portraying the perspective of that society of the time hence the story is far from just being a love story. The narrative that Jews in Europe were seen as unscrupulous money lenders was a widely held view not least because the largely Christian population saw those practices as unethical mind you nothing had changed even to this day in the way the large investment banks operate. In terms of Venice as the centre for finance and commerce of the time Shakespeare was preaching to his audience the virtues of citizens rights and responsibilities but also the wise applications of the law. We must also remember that the state of Italy had not formed yet at the time and Venice was one of the autonomous regions that formed the Italian state just over 150 years ago (the story is centred way before that).
