You sir....you are doing what everyone else is scared to do. No one wants to explain everything. So for that, thank you. Wish I could bounce ideas off you.

    Recently sub'd. A good friend up in Watertown got me to start playing with saw motors many years ago. You sound just like him in that you can get 80% of the gains with 20% of the work that everyone thinks is required. Really does not take a whole lot to make these saws come alive for a good work saw.

    Thank you for sharing your knowledge Harvey!
    Ported my 48mm 365 last week just because I wanted to see what you can do with a 48mm jug. She runs good and I'm surprised how little actual grinding I had to do.
    1983 266se is on the bench now. I'm going a little further on that one, hoping with the numbers I picked she will pick up some rpm but not loose torque.
    Next will be a 272xp.
    I'm going to learn porting thats for sure. Hope to get good enough to port my 394. I want one like buckins.

    I just want to say I love watching your videos and have learned a lot about porting from you!!!!! But I have a question about a saw. I have a 562xp great light saw but I was wondering if you could put a 572xp cranck and cylinder on it or just the cylinder?? I know porting it would wake it up alot I just want to build something different!! Thank in advance!!!!

    Took my tiny 40cc Dolmar apart just for fun. The transfers are at the inside and aimed towards the intake port. Still cant figure out why this is good? I'm hooked on chainsaws now haha. Love the vids!

    • @Ketis1985
      @Ketis1985 Год назад

      They need to be aimed towards the intake side for effective loop scavenging. If your upper transfers are poorly shaped or too high(not enough blowdown)or they are aimed too much towards the exhaust your motor will waste(shortcircuit) unburned fresh airfuel charge through the muffler.... more you can keep of that air fuel charge in the chamber more power you gonna make.

    Can you please show a bit more what you do with the upper transfers? Iv'e been running a 272 piston in a FT372 for a while, it clears with base gasket and with a bit grinding on the exhaust it gets close to your numbers from the 390 porting videos. But it didn't run very good. I found out that the blowdown was over 30degrees. Have just raised the transfers 2-3mm (about 100thou), not very easy with a dremel and i prefer not to bevel the piston. How do you do it?
    Edit: it made a hughe differnce!

    Go slow you can't put material back on. Top fuel dragster vs "Paris-Dakar". One you rebuild after every run, the other once a year. Hot saw vs logger saw. Rebuild every run vs after 5 yrs. Go slow until you blow one up/burn it out then you know you've gone too far. Thanks for sharing the knowledge. Thanks for the stories; I'm betting your dad figured you punished yourself enough.

    Hey Harvey, could you explain oil for these old saws with modern oil? I'm curious the affects mixing up 16:1 as some old saws stated with a modern oil such as the Husqvarna or Stihl oil? What is your opinion and what literally is good and bad? I think there should be a video on it. I think you're the guy to do it. Thanks for all the tips and information you share. Fellow New Yorker

    Yes you can outrun a bear. Jump of a cliff into a lake if you can swim fast! :) Or use a log to float down river. When being chased water is your friend. A high powered pressure washer will pop a bear eyes out. :) Lived in Whistler BC and they would come up to the gas station while you were pumping gasoline. A tourist was pumping gas and I told him to turn around and that bear was at the gas station sign. He jumped so fast in his car. I looked that bear straight into the eyes with a vicious face and she turned around and went into the neighbors garbage can. :) When I lived in BC we had grizzly bears that is another story.

    Hey great video man! I like your stories. So I'm working on this hiway 390 cylinder and putting it on my 385, I'm trying to follow your advice but I'm going to have to machine the base. So if I take 20 thousand off the base my numbers will be 98/120/78 ofcourse I will have to raise the transfers to get to 120 duration. Will that be suitable for this saw thanks. I know your busy!

    I still wanna do a 395 but I’ve been looking for old pioneers and mculluch saws. Living here in Maine I’m hoping to be able to find some along with some old axe heads from back in the late 1800s. Back then the machias lumber company was cutting massive amounts of wood in the winter with axes and cross cuts and driving them down river to the massive saw mill. Then they shipped the lumber out on old sail powered schooners!! So I’m hoping when i reach out to my eastern Mainers I’ll be able to find some nice old axe heads!!!!i also got a guy who says his grandfather has two mculluch saws. He didn’t know the models when I talked with him all he knew was they had manual oilers. I can’t wait to see what they are!!!!

    Hi Harvey quick question! I've got a western auto store 430 wizard that looks just like the old poulan you showed us the other day, it's just a different color. Did poulan make that for wizard or what's the deal with them and can you still get parts?

  • @PoplarMechanic
    @PoplarMechanic 4 года назад

    Hey sorry Harv I made a mistake on the intake. Anyway if I need further help after this I'll email you but I think I found it. So I'm gonna take 20 thousand off the base. That will give me exhuast 164 duration. Intake 158 duration . Transfers 120 duration. I could take 30 thousand and get 162 exhuast duration. Intake would be 160 duration. I'm leaning towards 20 thousand because using the bluing paint it seems each degree is slightly over 10000. Thanks and sorry for all the questions, your videos have helped me more than you know.
