Better to get out if you can’t afford it instead of skipping maintenance or cutting corners and it eventually causing a problem and potentially a crash. In flight engine failure is worse nightmare, especially after take off in populated area... BTW, you need an experimental!! You sound like you’re just realizing the reality of the situation after spending all the money. Everything you mentioned could have been realized before spending any money. I would love a lancair 360! Fast and fuel efficient! Those old Piper and cessna models are so un-aerodynamic and slow and as you explained, expensive for outdated crap. Surprised you didn’t mention the Piper wing spar AD issue too.
Where did you see anything about keeping any kind of maintenance? Obviously you are an Internet troll and you not paying attention to the point of the video that general aviation is a complete rip-off with all the ridiculous fees and inspection that give you absolutely nothing maybe if you know just a little bit about the engine mechanical system you will understand how bad it is to keep opening and closing up this is the reason of 90% of crashing after annual
@@redjet505 Wow man 10 months later and you're still quite bitter about your general aviation experience!! Glad you are not flying with that attitude!! I think your problem is you! The best way to do general aviation on a budget is join a flying club like I did where the cost is shared by 10-20+ pilots. I only pay when I fly, no monthly fees for me. Then move up to a nice experimental. Also, keep in mind GA is a complete non-essential luxury that is extremely limited in the overwhelming majority of other countries. In USA, it is common for people to have personal planes or access to one, which is completely not common or possible in other parts of the world.
Nothing about coming out ahead it is just a rip off that everybody over charging you for something certified by the FAA when you actually see what's going on nothing is certified it is one big lie so they can charge you more money for example the light bulb in the front of the airplane is from a tractor and you pay seven times more for it everything you pay and you pay double triple or more because nobody trying to stop it I move to experimental and ultralight so I don't need to deal with them anymore. Not to talk about Flight School how the ripping off customers is celebrating over there you never ready and they never give you what you need but you pay full price for it. I'm in aviation for 30 years now and I had enough
@@redjet505 I agree that just because a particular part (light bulb, main gear strut, etc) is an aviation part, you are charged a premium. The problem is, this is one of the most heavily regulated industries in the world, and there is a lot of liability that goes with manufacturing and selling these parts. Most, if not all, of this regulation is written in blood from prior accidents and loss of life. So unfortunately it just comes with the territory. Enjoy the experimental side of aviation - it is certainly less regulated and more cost effective.
Don’t say goodbye to your airplane, say goodbye to communist California and go to a smaller airport. Many airports have hangar rent for less than $200 per month (though there is likely a waiting list) and will allow you to tie down outside for free. You are right about the expenses of maintenance, though. Most enjoyable hobbies are indeed expensive (boats, off-road vehicles, drag-racing, etc. can also cost money).
Dude, get you and that airplane OUT of Communist-a-fornia. My Cherokee is reasonably affordable; but then I participate HEAVILY in its care and repair. You can too.
Get out of California. You thoughts on spark plug threads is not true. VNY is a terrible place to tie down. I would drive an hour to a different airport. You can also blame Attorney's on high cost.
They are making it every year harder and harder to have an airplane no matter where it is. I was trying to get a hangar at Whiteman Airport it is close to Impossible
Yes-i-do build ultralight I have Hummel ultracruiser I think what's going on right now with Aviation is completely ridiculous. The problem is people instead of try to fight the FAA to make stuff cheaper for us keep paying for everything. And I see it very clearly at the big airport that people end up losing everything. Losing the hangers losing the airplanes this is getting out of control.
I am a bit confused, you went and paid money to get your private pilot's license, you decided to go buy a Piper Cherokee and become an airplane owner, and after all of that, you decide to give up your airplane and give up aviation because it's too expensive? It just sounds to me like you didn't do the proper planning, or expense calculation before buying your airplane, including long term 5-10 years in advance. You compare cost of MX with the cost of MX for a motorcycle and you say you're being ripped off. The reason why this is the case is because anyone can be a motorcycle mechanic, but not many people can become A&Ps or AI's. People that decide to get into aviation understand the costs associated with it and they don't over extend themselves. I'm sorry to see you leave aviation man, hopefully you'll still rent airplanes from Encore or something....
I am sure that if you are a commercial airline pilot that you probably have to work at McDonalds at the weekends in order to pay for your training. and now you will work as a pilot for $15 an hour
California is the problem. What keeps you there? You can also go to a community college and get your A&P license and work on your plane saving on your annual. I'm an A&P and I even started working on my own car for example the dealer wants $800.00 for an alternator and I can go to Autozone and get it for about $150.00. Also there is alot of experimental aircraft out there that are quite neat. Go to sun n fun in florida and see what they have!
Well, that is your point of view. Now mine. I was 10x smarter in that I got my A&P license a long time ago. I am able to do most maintenance myself. I did extensive research prior to buying my Piper Cherokee (about 2 years). I knew prior to purchase how much to budget on a monthly basis as set-aside. I also did extensive research on airplane tie-down cost at 5 different airports in my area of CT. I also ensured to make myself known to the entire FBO and the aircraft I owned. Yes, it is expensive but by doing homework prior to buying, you save a lot of heartaches and money. I also got myself as a member in Piper Aircraft Association. I also am member of AOPA and use the FAA Wings Program for training. You are right about one thing, you SHOULD get out
Let me tell you I stupid you sound you got to school for three years wasted three years of your life so you can do maintenance on your own airplane the amount of money I make it for years I can buy 7 airplanes, my point is that evaluation is a rip-off don't take it personally it's mostly because of people like you
You know every year we bury so many Pilots with your point of view that they are better than everybody, I know one day you going to ever and number stick to your ass on a mountain somewhere
That is why I left California. I live in Ohio, work in an office moving those big jets in and out of KVNY. My ex-sister-in-law is furious I have a nice house in the country, RV, 2 horses and a Piper Arrow II on less than half of what my brother makes. My payment, tax and home owned ins is just what their property tax is and my property is valued higher. Get out of California, keep your plane keep your life style on half the income. I have grown up around planes, have a degree in Aviation and am an aircraft dispatch, meteorologist, I may have to go experimental because of cost but I love flying.
I'm proud of you! It is a rip off! I have money...30,000,000 because I never got ripped off. I'm flying now and will be 1,000 poorer in a few days after 3 hours of flight training.
Go park your plane at the other airport and quit your whining. You have more issues with your local area than you do with aviation. Van Nuys itself it a iconic airport and as such they jack the prices up just like they do at football games and amusement parks. You should have done your research before you bought. $30k for a hangar? Is that per year? If that is the purchase price, thats extremely cheap.
You are a douchebag idiot. You don't have a clue who I am and what I'm doing for general aviation, you know once in awhile we are scraping out of a side of a mountain an idiot like yourself crashing his airplane into a mountain because you know everything better than anybody else, I got seven airplanes with along the years I have about 3,000 hours of me flying. So let me know why do you think that you are better than me. I guess we will see you one day on your funeral
Listen you douchebag. I'm flying since I was 14 years old. If you need to troll someone do it to one of your friends not to me, I'm smarter than you I have more money than you, and you're not even able to do 10% of what I do. And I do have my airplanes for more than 7 years so shut the hell up
Dude, I am fully aware of the operating expenses involved with owning an airplane but you’re way off base with the chrome anecdote. You clearly don’t understand anything about chrome plating or de-plating or hard chrome at all. And btw... I build custom motorcycles and I can tell you that you couldn’t get anything bigger than an axle nut chrome plated for $100.
Obviously people like you assume that you're smarter than everybody all I am saying is that this is what happened with my experience in my area and right now the reason AD this airplane that will add to the cost another $18,000 just to satisfy the FAA so no I don't think you are aware of everything just based on your experience other people experience as well and other people have opinion is well

@@jonasbaine3538 no I just decided it to take the time and answer you and tell you that you're an idiot
I’m stay with you, need long pocket to afford a private aircraft.
What exactly did you expect? Unless it's a tax write off, or staying busy as a flight school leaseback, you're not going to come out ahead.
Tie down outside for free! what country you're talking about? not USA.
@@MD-ie1qn In Georgia, a lot of small airports don’t charge anything for tiedowns.
Lol look at all the dislikes from the boomers who like getting ripped off and can’t work on their own motor vehicles
Dude, get you and that airplane OUT of Communist-a-fornia. My Cherokee is reasonably affordable; but then I participate HEAVILY in its care and repair. You can too.
Chrome vs hard chrome
Get out of California. You thoughts on spark plug threads is not true. VNY is a terrible place to tie down. I would drive an hour to a different airport. You can also blame Attorney's on high cost.
They are making it every year harder and harder to have an airplane no matter where it is. I was trying to get a hangar at Whiteman Airport it is close to Impossible
there is no point to try to do anything in California!!, especially if the FAA involved
Don't get out of aviation... get into the non certified planes, does not have to be experimental... and move away from Commifornia.
I am sure you are commercial pilot and you are part of the general problem!!
Research has confirmed my choice of an LSA plane and license.
@@tomlawrence713 no I am a pilot !!
Pls give me...I need ur plane
Well you live in California. So you should just quit California. Would probably solve alot of problems.
I will not go for 3 years College to work in an airplane to save $1,000 for a mechanic

Good for you
Go park your plane at the other airport and quit your whining.
Thank god this guy isn't in aviation anymore!!!!

Obviously people like you assume that you're smarter than everybody all I am saying is that this is what happened with my experience in my area and right now the reason AD this airplane that will add to the cost another $18,000 just to satisfy the FAA so no I don't think you are aware of everything just based on your experience other people experience as well and other people have opinion is well
@@redjet505 I have a Decathlon, I’m aware of the cost of operating expenses. Most people do their homework before they buy an airplane and they figure out what it will cost to own it and use it. There should have been no surprises.
@@redjet505 and what in the hell did you do to that Cherokee?? Did you paint that with rattle cans?? I’m trying to understand what paint scheme you were trying to achieve here, it looks like a kid painted it with some random paint in their dads garage! That’s pretty terrible looking.
Aviation isn’t the problem! I know it’s expensive but fun simply isn’t cheap no matter what type of fun. First i would say move away from California with all the democrats that hate when people enjoy their lives and go to a general aviation friendly airport also don’t buy a project plane unless you have deep pockets and as far as annuals you can do owner assisted annuals which helps you get to know your plane better. My friend was getting annuals for 300 dollars on his Cessna 140. And complaining about it being expensive and annoying isn’t going to lower any prices. I don’t mean to be rude at all just saying.
You are forgetting about the FAA AD Fordyce airplane every two weeks something else
Ok sorry about that and don’t get me wrong. I’m not trying to be rude, I’m just saying that there are cheaper ways to do it!
