Welcome to boat ownership. A few things that may help you out. 1) The radar is not for weather. It's for proximity. Extremely helpful at night. It's not obsolete whatsoever. It's completely stand alone. It sends and receives it's own data. At night, when you run over a piling or someones boat, you'll wish you had it. It also adds a lot of value to your boat. 2) The other items on the dash appear to be auto pilot. They are not obsolete and are extremely helpful with the radar on long hauls. Get them working. They will also add value to your boat. 3) You don't need to register the name of your boat with the USCG if you're recreational. "The federal government requires registration of certain vessels with the Coast Guard to prove the boat's nationality. The system also facilitates trade between states and allows certain vehicles to enter restricted waters. I served in the Navy 23 years. Radar is one of the most important things to have on any seagoing vessel. Put it back.
5 лет назад+86
I'm not going to disagree here, radar is a super helpful tool. I would like to point out that this might not be a sea going vessel. If all you will do is travel on rivers and near the coast, in good conditions, there is no real need for radar. Radar helps navigate in low visibility or when you might encounter a lot of traffic going irregular paths. Out at sea, oncoming traffic could come from any angle, but near the coast and on rivers, the directions of travel and lanes are usually much more defined. All in all, these people just got their boating license, and I wouldn't expect a long expedition right now. So removing the radar, which might be broken even though they have no great understanding of its workings, is probably fine.
@ While what you said is true, I would still recommend it for little things like unexpected fog. You prepare for the worst, even if it is is unlikely, in the advent that the worst happens. My dude you need some specific things for that boat. A proper AIS system A GPS and no not your phone but a marine GPS. Radar is a bit optional since you probably won't be going to far out with it and most likely not when fog or rain is a possibility. Should you consider doing night sailing with your boat then you need it. There is zero arguments for not avoiding it then. BTW radar signals don't work like you explained but that's a whole nother theme. Depth finder would be a good investment but isn't a necessity. Upgrade your navigational lights to LEDs for better visibility and make sure you buy marine LED lights and cases. I tell you these things as a professional merchant mariner and not some internet keyboard warrior.
@@brendanshorter5550 unless one is already installed I wouldn't buy one. That's the reason I didn't mentioned it. Having it is nice but not really a necessity for the water ways he seems to want to frequent.
@@Madd_Whack it's not about being super serious about it or not the things that I mentioned are literal must haves. A cell phone is in no way, shape or form a valid alternative to proper equipment. You can use it to support the stuff you have but never to replace it.
Old radars will still work. Its just broken. Radars are not dependent on a "outside" signal. They tramsmitt the signal and recieves it itself. It works kind the same way as how bats navigate. Get a new one.
My money also is that the radar works fine still, just the unit on the dash is broken. He didn't even say that he checked, he just took the salesmen's word.
ALSO-RAN ! I was so excited about this build when I first saw the video and I just got this in my recommendation a few days ago and realized he hasn’t made a video about the boat since 😂

Totally agree. My dad got a Bayliner 47 and most of the same equipment was outdated as this. My dad updated the radar and anything that his ipad wouldn't cover.
Please update us on how your Coast Guard inspection goes ... hint "an iPhone is not an appropriate substitute for a speed indicator or chart plotter", the first time you hit a submerged structure may be your last. Also a radar does not really interface other ashore systems so it's compatibility with other shore systems is a non-issue ... and get an AIS. And please stay away from sailboats you'll loose in a big way.

tip #1 only use stainless hardware TIP #2 FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLEASE SEE THIS LOL use 5200 for everything. screwing in a new screw? fill the hole with 5200 first. seal everything you don’t want moisture to get into the fiberglass through non sealed holes or that clean boat will start to rot
Patrick Gallagher do NOT use 5200 for everything. It is designed for permanent sealing bellow the waterline. 4200 is for non critical fastening and he should be filling voids with epoxy; not sealant.
Chandler Green correct i was referring to using 5200 for sealing holes that hardware will be going into and through hull fittings, i work for Midnight Express and we use 5200 from top to bottom on all our riggings.
You might want to refer to CFR 164.35 since your yacht is ocean going capable I'm pretty sure the Coast Guard says you are required to have a radar. You're iPhone don't count pretty sure you need a radar hard mounted.
CFR 164.35 only applies to ship 1600 tons and over. Radar is not required for this boat. If you do have radar you are required to use it at all times when underway.
@@timbracco1768 Sorry Tim. You're 'super dooper' wrong. Irrespective of dead weight, if said ship is hauling a 1,600 tons and over of cargo, then Apple Radar is most definitely required. Did you see the size of his girlfriend's ass? Easily a few thousand tons right there.

@@unenthusiasticsalt2123 Yes, a phone is the alternative. We didn't navigate the sea until the radar. What if things like sextants and nautical charts where a thing that existed, or celestial navigation a concept. I wonder what our world would look like today if that was the case.
I believe you're think about a weather radar.... A radar on a boat is an actual radar to display signatures of other objects in the water and can show everything down to a bird sitting on the water 1/2 mile or more away. It's crucial for ANY boater to have that does real cruising on large waterways. You get caught in fog, you're FUCKED without it.
Love how he "built" everything he installed on this boat (especially those 'inset placeholders'). AKA had his buddies do most of the work while he stained a couple pieces of plywood. Sick skills
And a Cummins to boot, known smokers, just look at any Cummins powered truck. If really smokey get the calibration of the injector pump checked but replace air filter first, there're a lot cheaper than a pump overhaul, not that they should get very dirty on a boat.
Radar doesn't use stations, it sends out radio waves to look for objects and helps guide you in times of inclement weather. Also, get a good sonar/depth meter/chartplotter, it will help you GREATLY.
Jeff Allen when I saw the plywood I cringed, not to mention he covered all the storage doors. Oh, and that "bar" woohoo.... Like lipstick on a pig. I hope he sold it, I've seen to many jackass's on the water like him in my 41 years of boating.

@@andymcknight9879 correct. I have edited my comment so it's easier to read. Depth finders generally rely on sonar but gps such as navionics also have pre programmed sea floor depth and other obstacles.
Radar is basically pointless where he is going to be. They’re not going offshore, and rarely will be out at night. Radar would be for spotting other boats when nav lights might be hard to see or where regulations might not exist OR it would be used to spot squalls at night. Really not needed in Chris’s case considering this girl will spend a lot of time at the dock as a 2nd home

You need radar on any vessel over 40’. In weather like fog you must be able to see where not only where you are in relation to other vessels but the shore as well. I certainly hope that you’re using marine grade plywood otherwise your hard work will need to be replaced.

Should you consider doing night sailing with your boat then you need it. There is zero arguments for not avoiding it then. BTW radar signals don't work like you explained but that's a whole nother theme.
Depth finder would be a good investment but isn't a necessity.

Old radars will still work. Its just broken. Radars are not dependent on a "outside" signal. They tramsmitt the signal and recieves it itself. It works kind the same way as how bats navigate.

Been on the ocean half my life. Never had a radar, and almost never seen a radar on other boats (guess it's a question of money). It depends on what you are going to use your boat for. @@unenthusiasticsalt2123 Yes, a phone is the alternative. We didn't navigate the sea until the radar. A radar on a boat is an actual radar to display signatures of other objects in the water and can show everything down to a bird sitting on the water 1/2 mile or more away. It's crucial for ANY boater to have that does real cruising on large waterways. You get caught in fog, you're FUCKED without it.

So smoke on startup and smoke when wide open........ Yup, I think Identified the problem........... It's a diesel engine.
On a boat diesel is much better. Safer, more efficient and ones it's running drains no battery.
And a Cummins to boot, known smokers, just look at any Cummins powered truck. If really smokey get the calibration of the injector pump checked but replace air filter first, there're a lot cheaper than a pump overhaul, not that they should get very dirty on a boat.
The Cummins is just doing what it does there is nothing wrong with it
White smoke in diesels can also be a lean condition. Could be as simple as semi plugged fuel filters. Sweet boat btw.
Clean the injectors and give it a good service when Diesel engines smoke is a sign that it’s making POWER
Radar doesn't use stations, it sends out radio waves to look for objects and helps guide you in times of inclement weather.

I worked in a luxury yacht boat yard for 22 years one thing I learned money and brains don't travel in the same Circle good luck
really, fascinating. are rich people dumb?
@@thedude4795 I wouldn't say they are dumb but sometimes if they are out of their field they act completely clueless. Some of them don't even know how to put gas in their cars as they always have somebody doing that for them.
@@thedude4795 some are,,, very dumb and don't possess the common sense of a rock , but so are some poor people,, butt hen again, poor people don't spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on a boat
@Willie My best friend (the mechanic) does not have the slightest clue on how to read a contract and he also buys stuff on credit all the time. What a strange world we live in where people develop complementary skills.
@Willie I have a Masters in architecture so surely I should be able to build a space station by your logic?
b is for boaty mcfloty
next episode how to ls swap a boat..
No no no, how to tow a boat with 1000hp ls swapped Lamborghini ;)
m H wow!! thats way better!!
OMG!!! This exactly what I want. Not too big, not too small. Thank you for doing this video. I have extremely enjoyed this!!!🤯
You're about to remove the radar, echosounder and autopilot.. And replace them with your phone?
replace the radar with a surf board .............awesome hahahahahaha
@@chamisi You don't see that every day, to be fair 😁🤣
My family has been in the boat business for over 50 years. The ones who can actually afford to buy yachts dont know shit about them and dont respect nautical tradition. I had a spinal surgeon buy a $2,000,000 yacht that ran aground in the channel that leads to his house. He didnt check the charts to see if the channel was deep enough to accomodate the yacht......
Yes, would someone tell this guy he's a moron, ditching essential safety equipment is a no no, the autopilot isn't necessary but the rest is.
The next video will be "My boat sunk"
Thank you for the instructional video. "How to defile a Riva + dramatically increase your odds of causing (very possibly life-threatening) incidents/accidents on the water".
A is for Accident waiting to happen, T is for tacky, and S is for sacrilege.
I laughed so hard!
It was hard to watch....
DUDE! Its great to have that phone for inland use, but if you ever take that thing to sea, you better make damned sure you have all of those "obsolete things" functioning . That phone is a single point of failure and death for you. Please as a ex Navy guy please get those devices all functioning if they are not.
Grand Admiral Tolbat Presents its temporary
twitch moments yea but dying isn’t 😂
He's never gonna take that boat to sea. I doubt it leaves the marina more than twice a year.
“Let’s remove the radar and add a wake board rack so we can wake board off a 44’ boat.” *facepalm* As you know by now 44’ boats don’t handle like sports cars. Its your boat and your money; hope you got lots of it because they ain’t cheap.
David Farrar it’s probably gone since they haven’t made a vid of it since they made this one
@@davebanach9891 he just posted a new video after what like a year of silence, if you haven't seen it they take it on their first "trip to the ocean" and lets just say he needs to learn more about diesel engines and should not have ignored that smoking issue
It is a Riva! Make it look like it did when delivered...because they came just perfect from the factory.
Viewers: When are the next video about the LS swapped Huracan?
Chris: I am going to buy a boat/yacht !

That radar set is really expensive probably just needs a display upgrade
Find a used original monochrome crt display on eBay or thru a local marine electrician. IIRC the newer generation Furuno multifunction lcd/color displays use a different c-bus cable.
A brand new garmin cost around 1.2k.. for what you’d spend to repair an old furno it is not worth trying to fix..
Mark Stronge brand new garmin Fantom starts around 900. Garmin 7” MFD (gps, sounder etc.) 1000
Mark Stronge the Fantom is the open array... the MFD is the display
7:05 i saw that little impact lol im telling!
