This is actually a great representation of what this condition is actually like. If you noticed at the end the guy stood up because his left side saw it but the half that talks and reasons didnt and when asked why, his brain comes up with a plausible excuse. He genuinely believes he stood up because he wanted his sweater and not that his other side saw it. Really interesting and a real thing when one side of the brain cant talk to the other side

@@legojay14to put it simply left and right sides of your brain are independent but have connections in the middle which helps them communicate, one is rational logical and handles speech while the other is a creative mute funnily enough, the right side brain controls left side of your body and left side brain controls right side of the body, occasionally theres a need of surgery where both halves need to be separated, or you having enough head trauma can force the connection between them to just stop functioning, this results in something similar to DiD, you are now essentially 2 people, with different likes and specializations, the longer time passes the more you'll become different, someone may ask you to point at your favorite color, and youd have both arms point into different directions or have the mute side arm slap the arm of the one who can talk, imagine having a mute twin, now imagine if that mute twin controlled half or your body, but he chose to most of the time let you believe you have full control, thats what's happening

    • @AwTickStick

@@legojay14 Yes, this is well documented in cases where the corpus callosum is severed. This was a practice that was done to prevent seizures a long time ago.
The left hemisphere controls the right half of the body, the right hemisphere controls the left half. The two sides of the brain would normally come to a consensus before making an action, but if the brains can’t come to a consensus through communication then they will disagree and perform different actions.
This shows itself as when the patient tries to solve a puzzle, the hands will “fight” over how the puzzle should be solved. Swatting away the other hand or grabbing something else.
The left hemisphere has speech recognition centers and speech formulation. The broca’s area is an example. Damage to that region just makes it hard if not impossible to talk.
The right hemisphere can’t speak, but it is still capable of sight and pattern recognition. This means the right side is capable of reading and writing and recognizing objects. Interestingly if you form a face out of vegetables in photoshop, and show it to the left eye, the person will say they see a face. But if you show it to the right eye they will say they only see vegetables. As I said the right side can’t talk so you have to have them click a button for what they think they are seeing.
Another thing is that if the right brain makes a decision to stand up, the left side of the brain will often make excuses for why they made a decision. This happens in people who haven’t had this procedure done. If you show people two faces and choose who they would rather work with, and do this for 10 faces. And then swap out the faces they chose with those they didn’t, many people will not notice the switch and explain their reasons for picking people they never chose.
However here, the person is responding to a command, but the speaking part doesn’t know about it, so it just gives a plausible reason for why they did what they did. This is an illusion that allows us to piece together the world and our story in it. To our brains there has to be a reason for our actions, doing something for no reason is illogical so it invents reasons.
You do this everyday, you just aren’t aware of it. It’s an illusion of continuity and it the main reason why I think free will is also an illusion. We “make decisions.” But we cannot know why we do them, and explain them as if it was our own choice. We think our choices are our own. But they aren’t. And that’s fine, it isn’t like it changes anything.

This is a real phenomenon that we studied in college. Normally, each hemisphere of the brain controls the opposite side of the body. In this case, the part of the brain that connects the two hemispheres (called the corpus callosum) doesn’t communicate properly. Since one hemisphere of the brain is primarily responsible for language, the patient isn’t able to say what’s going on but the affected hemisphere can control the arm to replicate what its eye saw; in one case a patient responded to “are you religious” by writing “yes” with one hand and “no” with the other, as if there were two separate people in one brain, really interesting stuff.

This is something that can happen to those that go through a "Split Brain" procedure, a last resort treatment for those with severe forms of epilepsy. Your brain is actually two separate organs that are connected to eachother to transmit signals to eachother.
Right brain sees through and controls the left side of the body while the left sees and controls the right. Your left brain handles speech, so the reason why he didn't say "candles" is because the right brain saw the word, and since it can't send the signal, left brain says "nothing" since it saw nothing. When right brain was told to stand, left brain got the memo to stand as well through noticing the movement right brain was doing, but doesn't know why. So it produces a reason why.

There was a man who used to have constant seizures (I can’t remember why), and to fix it he had a surgery done that cut the connection between the left and right hemisphere in the brain activity.
In the representation of the words on each side, you can see that he sees the word but his right-side brain is unable to comprehend it at all. But his left hemisphere in his brain (which is responsible for creativity) drew the word that he didn’t comprehend.

This a real phenomenon that happens when the brain callus is damaged, the two hemispheres don't communicate anymore (at least not as well as before as I understand) so information isn't synced and each hemisphere becomes somewhat autonomous, and right hemisphere which controls left hand among other things can do whatever he wants... which suggests that we have two intelligences within ourselves, the left one is in charge of consciousness and language (thats why House said "Right hemisphere is a mute loser").
There are reports of a man that was submitted to a brain callus damaging operation (which reduces epilepsy symptoms ) and his left hand would start hitting his wife while the right was trying to protect her (see Physiology of Behaviour from Carlson, Chapter 1, just started reading it recently, funny I found this on my feed)

  • @belltale442
    @belltale442 3 месяца назад +8

This is a true phenomena that I think is very interesting and fascinating. Just as fascinating as phantom limb syndrome.
What you saw in this video is an example of the symptoms split brain patients may experience. A famous study by Roger Sperry used the same procedure that House and his team were using to split the patients eyesight between left and right visual field.
The word candle in the left visual field is picked up by the right side of the brain. But the right hemisphere isn’t responsible for processing words so the right hemisphere has to instead send it to the left hemisphere (the side of the brain responsible for speech). However, if the patients brain is split at the corpus callosum then the left hemisphere never receives the information of what the word was because the two hemispheres couldn’t communicate.
However, the right hemisphere is responsible for all the drawing stuff which is why the patient was still able to draw the candle even though he didn’t know what the word was.

In the end she comes back and recalls that the only time the hand ever threw something out of anger was the deodorant and then it slapped her shortly after, leading them to investigate the components of the deodorant and realising that was the cause of the health issues
The alien hand syndrome was caused by a previous surgery to sever his corpus callosum, which was done to stop the seizures he was experiencing which potentially could’ve also been caused by the propylene glycol

If you find this episode interesting I highly recommend a book called “Left Behind” where a woman gets severe head damage in a car accident that causes her brain to basically forget that anything to her left exists. It’s called Left Neglect, I guess and it’s FASCINATING.

@@Xolareclipxefair but right side also tends to be more aggresive which makes sense I guess if you had a bunch of pent up dreams and desires and you literally can't communicate that to anyone. Left side just babbles on and on. Together they make up a human.

We had a whole month in psychology class dedicated to this condition. If your right and left brains somehow become disconnected, they start acting independently from eachother. It's really trippy and this is an accurate representation of what that's like

I studied this in a psych 101 course in 1981 and we have gone no further. That school lost funding. I never graduated nor did my advisors recommend any way to continue my interest and I was at the traditional age of leaving parental care and working for my own living.

In reality, a similar kind of condition could be caused by removing the corpus callosum from the brain. The corpus callosum is a membrane in between the two hemispheres of the brain that allow them to communicate with each other. I forget the name of the scientist who originally did this experiment (I’m sure they wouldn’t be hard to find though), but they did this experiment by removing the corpus callosum from a patient and ran the same tests as they are in this short. The results were very similar to the results in this short but there is a very interesting explanation why that I don’t wanna go into rn. You should absolutely check out their work though as it’s extremely interesting
