Being an older guy I have the privilege of grace to see some changes in all round tech over the years and ironically some attitudes remain as old as ever. For eg I remember when domestic HiFi systems went all in one back in the early 80s. There may have been some versions earlier but we will stick with the 80s for now. Homes became excited by the all in one boxs being shipped out by most Japanese manufactures and there was an argument for the pro and con in respect of the standing against HiFi separates. Looking at these all in one DJ Controllers I can see and hear the same argument. To be honest I only have a DJ controller because I am mobile or a t least prefer to be. If I was stationary I would probably go for separates i.e CDJ but I could not say for sure because I like using Serato and enjoy the convenience of a DJ controller over a Vinyl/CDJ system. I have never had an issue with sound quality as I use an exterior EQ that would raise the standard on a baked bean tin!
this is a great review. definitely what we need to know about the upgrade. I believe the options for flip and pitch in time bring it to the next level.
Thanks. Yeah, it's not a lot, but the dedicated buttons for flip might push people to use it more. But you should be able to map all the new function to buttons on an SZ as well
Post fader effects FINALLY!! Hopefully Pioneer does a firmware update for the SZ to allow this function. I couldn't believe the SX2 had this and the SZ didn't.
I should make this one my next upgrade, but what I really want to do is trade in my ns7 to the ns7III. Time to start putting money away again now that Christmas is over. I do like you new office. The white background looks really nice.
I think Numark are a better choice overall. I own a DDJ SX2 but I miss the sheer power of my old Numark NS6. I would like to see better volume levels from Pioneer in the future. Just having to slightly tweek the master volume for a dramatic increase is far more gratifying than having to turn you master volume almost 3/4s up for the same level and this is where my old NS6 just sinks the Pioneer comp!
Hey DJ tlm thanks for the Quick review and ur reviews always on point , I just want to ask an important question , is the post fader fx works on serato software fx or on hardwere or both ? The sz1 post fader on hardware only which was so disappointing for me !!! I love to have post fader on serato fx from software so u can play with lots of effects through that instead using colour fx from the hardware
Nice review Dj TLM, your reviews and information is always good. Now I am a owner of the first DDJ-Sz and for the most part I feel that a lot of features could be done with a firmware update for us original owners. I really wish they would do that.
No it has not had many firmware updates, but it seems like the "Pitch Play" and Post Fader Effects should be able to be done with Firmware or Midi file modifications, I guy did a Pitch Play midi file mod that I have and use for my S9 for Pitch Play
I'm a new DJ (new to digital djing) and I've been testing out the different controllers and love the feel of the ddj SZ series. The dilemma is should I buy the Used ddj sz or used ddj sz2.
DJ TLM..on a side note, I bought this controller as soon as I saw this review so thank you. Lol. Quick question, is there a way to map the Serato effects on the microphone? The dedicated on-board effects sounds terrible. Right now I have a separate device for effects, but I’m just curious if there’s a way to use Serato’s effects...especially since those effects are in sync with the BPMs. Thanks in advance. Holla.

WHAT ABOUT THE FADER?? THE ORIGINAL SZ FADER DIDNT RESPOND THAT WELL.. DOES THIS UNIT HAS THE MAGVEL FADER THAT DE PIONEER DJM S9 HAS? OR WHAT DID THEY DO?
this is probably a stupid question but I get nothing out of my head phone jacks......is there a setting I'm missing..I am a newbie and stumped....help would be appreciated
Kinda disappointed they did not add a XLR booth out, which is available at similar devices at a lower price range ( Like the MC7000,8000). I understand why they did it,. But would of been nice to see. Maybe for the RZ2 we will see stand alone functionality that's an option on the MC8000 via Engine. Generally speaking, it's the same device so There really isn't anything to justify buying it. The choice really comes down if those new features are something you would he regularly using. If not, there is nothing wrong in getting the SZ.
Hey Dj Tlm I need your advice and some tips How I can play at the parties and gigs when I feel bad (and I am not talking about sick or physically bad) I talking about emotionally bad social life or relationship problems
My friend question I buy this mixer week ago but I have problem to find de crossefader reverse I using for Serato video but I can find the option to reverse the crossefader
Great video as always TLM. Are the post fader effects for the built in effects or the Serato ones? I don't believe the SZ had post fader for the Serato effects?
+DJNotourios i did recently shoot a mini tutorial for Denon for their MC7000. That should be uploaded by Denon in the near future. But I will make sure to get some of their controllers in the studio for a review 👍🏽
Man you change location every time! AHAH GREAT VIDEO! Also question. i have a djm900nxs2 spinning turntables. should i buy dicers or ddj sp1?! Also as a dj do i need some business cards and should i make them fun or super professional? keep it up. Salute!
I'll be here for a while :) This is my new workspace (with three different settings for the background). I like the Dicers a lot because they don't take up extra space, but on the other hand, the SP1 gives you more functionality. It all depends on how many functions you want to trigger. If it's just for cue points and you don't use more than five, Dicers might be the way to go. Otherwise the SP1 is a great option. Business cards should always be on you. I would either go super pro of pro with a touch of fun ;)
If you learned how to scratch on turntables it will be possible for you to apply most of those techniques on any controller. To get a feel that is most similar to turntables I would have to go with the NS7 series by Numark because of the moving platters
hey bro did you notice if they updated the cross fader I remember you saying in your last review that the cross fader had a fair bit of play before it opened the channel?
The Ddj-RZX is the only controller with pressure sensitive jog wheels like 2000 NXS2 but it's only available for Rekordbox The should have at least implemented those jogs on the SZ2 it's a nogo for me and why no cue lopping in Rekordbox with the pads what's up with that
Dj Bliss I wouldn't be surprised if they released a SZX for serato dj and video. i agree the jog wheels should be cdj style pressure sensitive. i use a sz and when your doing quick routines its annoying with the capacitive jogs
Hey ya dj TLM... Im a new DJ looking for a direct comparison of features from the DDJ SX2 to the DDJ SZ2 It seems there is nothing out there that simply states what the SZ2 has, or what its better at, ie better sound card or what have you, then the SX2. i am having problems with the sampler in the SZ2. When i set the sampler to master, it goes thru more than 1 channel therefor it multiplies so if channel 2 fader is up it comes out channel 2 but if channel 2 & 4 faders are up together it comes out thru both BUT MULTIPLES THE SOUND which makes it louder 😭 i need help into making the sample come out thru master without multiplying.
when i press the filter button , my filter automaticly engages the filter sound on both channels and its not isolated to one channel..... even b4 i turn the low-hi nob... not sure if or what im doing wrong...... help me solve this plze,,... thx Dj Jamil
You can record internally in Serato so the usb connection to the laptop is all I need to get the audio. Now, if I want sound through the speakers, I will have to connect the audio outputs on the controller
TLM - came straight here to hear your review first! thanks man! yeah, since remapping came out on SDJ, there is no real reason to upgrade #disappointedNOTdisappointed lol - Whats the weight like? Same?
djTLMtv I'm out the game.. Sokd my 1210's years ago the Rx seems to be the best thing to get back in to it... But I'd hate for a new device to come out right after I've spent!!
Dang, I want to own Pioneer stuff but I can't justify 700 extra for this controller over the Denon Mcx-8000 which has all this plus Engine software as a stand alone to run as a back up with two screens.
+Mike Castillo But why do you "want to own Pioneer stuff"? It should be about which controller fits your needs best. By the way, the MCX8000 is a beast indeed!
+Mike Castillo Just go with Denon. Pioneer is just an overpriced garbage..... I mean controller, you are paying more for the Pioneer name painted on it.
djTLMtv I just love the look and feel of the pioneer stuff but Denon is on point when it comes to mobile djing. Denon even puts two independent mic inputs on its mc4000, Denon just gets mobile djing. Love the new look man but I'll miss looking at your vinyl in the background. Great job brother.
DJ MELO yes i believe so i thought i saw it in his review of the sz1..im getting the sz1 like he said no reason to upgrade the 2 only has a couple more options and really, in my opinion the 1 is already just as badass. you get a seperate special effects controller for 400 bucks your possibilities are endless then..hope this helps
how many controllers do you have? If you have any sitting and collecting dust that you need to give up, I'm your DJ! I'll pay for shipping and whatever else you want!
djTLMtv I would really like to see you make a video about it. I might get one in the future. And btw i've heard some technical issues abot the 8000; like screens freezing, USB's not working correctly etc. I'm worried a bit.
I have to say about the mcx8000 is that there is definitely tech issues which is why today I will be returning mine for the second second time with the same issue. Which is that the screens freeze up about 15-30 minutes into a set and a lot of its finctions then become disabled. The only way I have been able to correct this is by shutting it off and on again but in another 15 minutes or so it will do the same thing. Amazing unit, if it worked properly. If you get one that works fine then count your lucky stars and take very good care of it
I have the SZ and this upgrage is a waste of money. The SZ also has post fader effects from the hardware. From looking at this video the latency seems to be about the same. To me the only new features are to the dedicated flip and key buttons and the pitch play. Just for 3 new features, I am disappointed by pioneer. A better upgrade would have been better platters and USB stick features, even a screen like the RZ would've been nice. These controllers are starting to become a waste of money, there's a new one every year smh.
+Allan Brown I totally understand where you're coming from, but you have to remember that Serato controllers are (probably) not their main priority. I can only guess, but I think anything innovative will be saved for Rekordbox DJ products. I think post fader didn't work on the sz until they released a firmware update. Do the post fader fx on the sz work for both the onboard fx and the Serato fx?
djTLMtv I completely understand that but what I don't understand is why make this product if they are focusing on their own software? the only thing I can think of is that maybe there is binding contract with serato that made them push this. As far as the post fader effect goes, there was a recent firmware update to the SZ. I cannot recall if it worked previous but it does work now, unfortunately it only works from the hardware effects and not with serato effects. If I could do this purchase over again I would of gotten the NS7 II instead. Features are cool on the SZ but what's the point if the platters are basic. Just my opinion. But for me moving forward I will grab the S9 soon with my turntables. Just to add to this buying the SZ2, you lose the ability to have DVS enabled. The SZ has this feature from start and does not cost additional. Great video as always keep up the great work. Happy New Year!
@@jay2exclusive There are two types of clients out there the mobile DJs and club DJs its aimed at the mobile DJs you should know that...you don't need all the fancy features if you start cutting up at weddings people will throw beers at ya.
There’s a size difference, I believe the jog wheels are different, and probably a few more things. That being said, they do share a lot of the same features. I don’t have either unit here so you could take a look at the product pages on the Pioneerdj website
always on point with your videos. best dj on youtube hands down. not busy just hating on other djs.

Great review, but what would be a good controller for scratching. In reference to a dj who is jumping from Turntables.
If you learned how to scratch on turntables it will be possible for you to apply most of those techniques on any controller. To get a feel that is most similar to turntables I would have to go with the NS7 series by Numark because of the moving platters
Cool. Thank you.
Hi Tlm,
what about the crossfader? is it sharp enough to execute the crab properly?
is it the same fader as the original sz? Looks like the fader in the s9, but maybe just because of the fader cap color?

+THEG12EG I would wait for Namm next month. I'm sure we'll see new stuff from multiple brands
Serato controllers are still top 10 sellers. Rekordbox units not so much. They will keep making Serato gear for a long time.
Envinite yea man, Denon just has the best mobile DJ features even if Pioneer has better jog wheels.
post fader affect is it in the ddj sz as well?
DJ MELO yes i believe so i thought i saw it in his review of the sz1..im getting the sz1 like he said no reason to upgrade the 2 only has a couple more options and really, in my opinion the 1 is already just as badass. you get a seperate special effects controller for 400 bucks your possibilities are endless then..hope this helps
It’ll be either this SZ2 or XDJ-XZ
The SZ2 has a better soundcard. The DAC on the SZ2 is as good as the djm900NX2.. 🤷🏽♂️
duuuuude, i justed picked up the DDJ SZ....didnt know they have a number 2 lol
Well, you're not missing out on a lot though ;)
return it ahah
How much
I would still choose my ns73 over this tbh 🙂
+John Parker so would I 😀
Thank you. But I hate to carry away a damn laptop for dying...with that price tag, they should of keep USB port for direct access to music.
how many controllers do you have? If you have any sitting and collecting dust that you need to give up, I'm your DJ! I'll pay for shipping and whatever else you want!
I own one controller: a Numark NS7. It would be cool to own everything I review, but that's not the case ;)

better than the ns7!?!?!
Not for me, but I prefer the moving platters. For others the SZ might be the better option
split cue?
Gurmit Singh do you mean when your using 2 laptops with 2 Dj's that would be great 😀
they actually sent you a SZ2?
+Heinrich ‘Noynoy’ Carreon I had the chance to test it
I would rather go for MCX 8000 instead of this ofc.
+%100 Portakal The 8000 is a beast! I still need to get that into the studio for a video
djTLMtv I would really like to see you make a video about it. I might get one in the future. And btw i've heard some technical issues abot the 8000; like screens freezing, USB's not working correctly etc. I'm worried a bit.
yeah please do trying to make up my mind between the two. pros and cons
Bryan Lamobtagne Yeah same
I have to say about the mcx8000 is that there is definitely tech issues which is why today I will be returning mine for the second second time with the same issue. Which is that the screens freeze up about 15-30 minutes into a set and a lot of its finctions then become disabled. The only way I have been able to correct this is by shutting it off and on again but in another 15 minutes or so it will do the same thing. Amazing unit, if it worked properly. If you get one that works fine then count your lucky stars and take very good care of it
Wat ik me steeds afvraag is, waarom iedereen dit alles in het Engels uitlegt ? Jij bent Nederlander, waarom niet in het Nederlands ?
Heel simpel: ik kan veel meer mensen helpen/bereiken met Engelstalige content
The ddj sz2 is better but i can’t afford it
don't buy it if you have the SZ defiantly no deference between both
but thx TLM as your the best
Allan Brown I'm considering purchasing a used SZ, how do out get Post fader effects to work on it?
@@jay2exclusive There are two types of clients out there the mobile DJs and club DJs its aimed at the mobile DJs you should know that...you don't need all the fancy features if you start cutting up at weddings people will throw beers at ya.
:)
Pioneer is keeping all the good stuff for RB!!! Lol
Not impressed at all.
+Dj Fire Touch you might be right indeed ;)
Hey @djtlmtv what’s the difference between the ddj sx3 and the ddj sz2 which one is better
There’s a size difference, I believe the jog wheels are different, and probably a few more things. That being said, they do share a lot of the same features.
I don’t have either unit here so you could take a look at the product pages on the Pioneerdj website
