  • Engine stalls, a dip in the canal and getting stuck on a fallen tree made todays narrowboat cruise a absolute joy!
    -----------
Thank you so much for watching. If you are new here, I'm Heidi and I live aboard my Narrowboat The Rum Wench and travel the UK's Canals in search of Adventure. After selling my house to experience an alternative lifestyle I bought a canal boat and a camper van which as a solo female who loves to travel, gives me the best of both worlds. I have recently got myself a new addition to the crew, a fabulous companion - my little rescue dog Bonny who is an absolute joy. I also work full time off grid from my tiny home and trade at canal festivals as The Pirate Boat

@john47jones me for one. I remember that storm, the same week that I rescued a mobile phone from the bottom of a new bit of canal. Nice flat bottom with no accumulation of silt and random load stones to contend with. Felt it with my bare feet and even picked it up with my foot. Would have put my head under or swam down if it came to it - as i did for another person's pair of glasses a week or two later!

First thing to do with any electrical item that gets wet is to take the battery off. Current flowing though water is what causes corrosion and eventually destroys it. Take the battery off then you can run it under the tap, dry it off and it'll be perfectly fine. Tie some cork balls to it for next time it takes a swim!

      @TheNarrowboatPirate  Год назад +1

It’s all dried out but the battery is knackered … luckily I have spares 😃🏴‍☠️ it’s usually on a magnetic tripod with a magnet mount and I stick it to the side of the boat and everything but I knocked it off in stress 😂😂

A bin bag round her shaft, and go pro in the drink.
Lilting round a fallen tree, making sure she doesn't sink!
Continuing at a tidy pace, met by gnat's balls in her face.
But the rum was a bigun and went down well.
Worth it, after a day from hell.
    Cheers Heidi

    Dear Heidi, the Rum Wench.
👍👌👏 Very well done again (video and work). In the end you managed everything by yourself. And it looks as if you could even save the GoPro. Congratulations!🎉 Congrats also for always smiling ÷ being so positive.
    2) The next thing to do might be taking Bonny to a diving school for making her diving license. So that she can help you with problems under water. 😁 ;-)
    3) As a relatively strong, tall man, I would've removed most of the tree as I did 10 years ago when a really big tree fell and blocked a street. All I had was my relatively small but sharp Japanese hand saw and a ton of power (even more than usually because I was in love at that time). I cut through a round about 25 cm diameter tree trunk twice. And through lots of thinner wood. By the way: I like it much better if the narrow channel/canal is without bushes.
    4) Please kindly allow me to suggest that you wench use a wrench and test if the bolts are still firm instead of only inspect them by view. Because it's important that the shaft is still firm/strong and in the right place (as you mentioned yourself). ;-) Thanks for consideration.
    5) Please kindly also allow me to tell you something: I've seen boat people open and shut the floodgates with a cordless device (relatively strong drill respectively impact drill/wrench). Although it's a good exercise doing it by hand, maybe such a device could help you.
5a) There are special devices for multiplying the torque power for getting off stuck lorry wheel nuts (Vevor brand for instance, round about 60 Euro). Of course you have to wind much more, this device might be able to help you too.
6)The rear entrance kind of Limerick at the end was even more funny this time. I also always wondered where the parrot might have gone. It's not a big portion but I hope it at least tasted well. 😁 ;-)
Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and especially health to both of you.

    • @TheNarrowboatPirate
      @TheNarrowboatPirate  Год назад +1

Thank you - Bonny hates the water 😂😂 We are not allowed to use electric devices on the locks unfortunately as they are over 200 years old and they have been known to damage the paddles and locks out of action then 😂 … I did test the bolts to be honest but couldn’t do it one handed holding the camera - it cost me so much last time so I was very cautious 😂😂

Thanks for replying and especially for giving a heart... just a moment! No heart this time? 😱😞😩 Ooooh... sigh, sob.
      2) A dog not liking to be in the water? That's quite unusual. Especially if it's a pirate's dog. 😁
      3) Good to hear about the tested bolts. I'm relieved now.
      4) Electric device not allowed to help with the lock gates? Maybe I watched a much older video then!?
      5) But the torque multiplying tool or at least a ratchet (for nuts) will be allowed. At least I guess so. But maybe another narrowboat pilot has already found a solution for the problem.
      Sincerely yours.

Wow! I am (as usual) in a kind of hurry and prone to skip a few seconds of the video now and then ... but after this intro, I'll stick to the whole video! (and now the comments)
Looks like a fab mooring with your friend - but yes, at times you need to go to a city to get supplies ... (and to train your dog)
nah, don't beep that "bollo**s should be allowed ... 😉 but this one seems to be a big sh**y one! Thinking that a GoPro might even have survived that water! But WTF about your engine?
CONGRATULATIONS for finding your cam! Hope you'll retrieve some!
NOW for the engine! - and a bit of a shower is always a good idea! Glad you managed to retrieve the data from the card! And good you can move on!
and WOW with full blast you got around that grounding! Kind of a victory, isn't it! I really can imagine how that feels! And hey, can't you get a more impressive horn?
    Rear Entrance Stuff:
When everything drops, trust your magnet
    Down to get wet yourself
With patience you will retrieve what
You dropped, got to blame just yourself!
But that's what boating's about: that
It all comes back to yourself.
You'll have to do stuff on your own
There won't be any helping elf!

Sometimes they do, like in a few of my winter videos when a lot of boaters got together and we went wood gathering. It all depends as a lot of the time the land opposite is private and we aren’t allowed … it also depends on access, if you can get your boat in, how shallow etc … I can’t often stop to trim trees etc as a single hander as no one to hold my boat for me and too dangerous to jump off into massive overgrown bushes as lots of boaters with crew have broken legs doing this 😃🏴‍☠️

Let's hope this day was a one-off. All you needed to complete such a disastrous day was to drop a full bottle of rum overboard after removing the stopper! You have a naturally sunny disposition and it takes a lot to make you gloomy. All the best and may all the lock gates be in your favour.

Well that's a go back to bed and hide under the covers day. I think that I would have just sat down and cried. No not really but things going wrong usually happen in 3's so hopefully that's it for a while. Lucky about the memory card, take care as always. Hug that wee girl and thanks for my trip this week. =-)

Her GoPro sunk so ways assayed,
To raise it up thus plans are made,
To enter cut and begin to wade,
Our pirate now a damn mermaid,
And FOUND as hope began to fade,
Her bounty raised aloft, its duty paid,
Thus triumphant the canal she bade,
Farewell to celebrate with cool lemonad . . .
    F**k it, I'll have a rum.

In one of your previous videos you asked what we called a cup of coffee, your name for it was "brew", sometimes here in Canada we refer to a "Brew" as a "Cup of Mud", mostly when it is old and too strong but not always.

Personally mg approach to fallen trees is to inspect first, then iff ii think I can squeeze through, I approach at ramming speed, but wind the engine down and into neutral just before the prop passes thee tree to avoid and drive shaft damage. Wwithh luck, momentum carries us through.

Sometimes a small grappling hook (very privateer style) us better than a magnetic in retrieving stuff.. I have a normal size one, but also a really small one made of heavy steel wire. Worth having handy for these times..
