- We've been fielding so many questions about getting into boating, so we're going to share some interviews with those more knowledgable than us as we cross paths.
In this video, we sit down with Curtis Stokes - our buyer's broker we used in early 2017 to purchase our boat, Y-Not. We were able to meet up at the recent MTOA Spring Rendezvous in Ft. Pierce.
We specifically selected Curtis Stoke's & Associates to help us in the buying process because of their stellar reputation for being non-pushy, focused on education and smoothly helping folks get into the boating lifestyle.
In this video, Curtis answers some of the questions we've most frequently gotten about starting the boat shopping experience:
- Where to research the type of boat that is right for you?
- What are the advantages of working with a buyer's broker?
- How to see boats in person
- How long should you shop for boats?
For more on Curtis Stokes, visit his brokerage at:

Also visit his RUclips channel - he posts videos of all of the boats he lists. We personally found his boat tours to be some of the best out there and they really helped us triangulate on the boats that appealed to us.

Cherie & Chris have been full time technomads since 2006. In the winter we explore land in our 1961 GM 4106 bus conversion. In the spring/summer we move aboard our 1999 Bayliner 4788 slowly exploring America's waterways along the Great Loop.

Wow! Great of you to have Curtis on. Thanks
Love your videos! Thanks for having Curtis Stokes as a guest. We just followed your lead and are hooked up with Michael from Curtis Stokes' as our buyer's broker in our search for our boat. Thanks again!
Awesome.. happy boat hunting! We worked with Michael a lot in our boat hunt - he's pretty awesome. Say hi to his parrot Margo if you get to meet her.
Great video. I really appreciate you sharing your purchase experience.
Great information. This is just the type of information I am interested in learning. Thanks!
Really informative videos thank you. Answering many of my newbie questions!
Great video idea! Thanks for this.
Two happiest times .... all the best!
Great information, thanks
Very nice, very informative! Enjoyed the video! Cajun
Good information and a realistic approach to buying a boat. If your not knowledgeable, get someone to help educate you. Good life lesson.
Great info to know - thanks!! We're 3-years into the RV thing (a rig which we're ALWAYS working on!!) and, already considering a boat purchase in a few years...should I be evaluated mentally first tho?? lol
You should definitely have your head examined :) (Seriously though, we're loving the cruising lifestyle too.. but it is a huge learning curve from RVing.)
short, but informative, thanks
Good vid, but the links you talked about would have been great to have in the description. Wish I could follow in y'alls footsteps, as I am in IT, but I am on site support. Maybe some day...
Interesting info. Look forward to more of this series. Did ya'll get the generator kinks worked out yet?
New generator is installed and working great. We'll get an update out on that.
WOW! A whole new one?! The old one must have been really tore up then.
Super show...thanks...
Great video! Should you employ a buyer broker is your building a new yacht with the manufacturer?
Very good.
Would a Buyer's Broker (such as Mr. Stokes) represent a buyer who may be interested in buying a new boat? In other words, would a buyer's broker advise, represent, and/or help some one negotiate the purchase of a new boat from a new boat dealership? Or do they just work the pre-owned market? Thanks! Love your videos!
That's a great question to ask Curtis directly... I honestly don't know anything about buying brand new boats.
Did I miss the financial arrangement with a buyer's broker? Is it like when you buy a house the brokers split the commission? Or do you have a separate arrangement on top of boat purchase price?
Yes.. most selling brokers split the commission with the buyer's broker. However, if you purchase a for sale by owner boat, they may not include commissions - and in that case, you'd pay your broker directly.
Is a broker a good idea when buying new from builder for optioning it out or even negotiating with builder etc.? (Should I ever win the lottery...)
We have never researched the new boat buying process, so we have no idea if brokers are commonly used or not.
do they help with getting the surveys done? have no clue where to go or who to contact for those.
Usually your boat broker can help you find a survey.. or ask on the various boating forums for recommendations in your area? We also just used Google to find some to call.
Great video....Where is Curtis based?
He's personally in Ft. Lauderdale - but travels all over, and has brokers located in popular marine cities across the east coast and inland.
Did the effects of Irma have or is still having an impact on inventory (liveaboard type vessels) in Fla specifically.
We asked him that too (great question!)... and he said in general no. Perhaps we can have him address that in a future video.
what is the commission? buyer broker. How do u avoid bad-hombres in the boat-broker business? Some brokers put a deposit, at wholesale price, on the target boat, then the broker flips it to the buyer at market price.
The commission is split between the buyer and seller's broker. You avoid bad brokers by getting recommendations from trusted resources.
Is there any such comparable person that exists for RV buying?
There may be a few out there.. but it's definitely not something nearly as common as it is for boats and houses.
2 Thumbs up!!
What is the difference between a motor yacht and a trawler?
Generally the type of hull... trawlers are designed to move at hull speed, motor yachts can go up on plane.
You guys look young and healthy, but how does someone with health issues manage on long trips away from home?
You'd probably want to speak with folks who are dealing with health issues for accurate feedback on that.
Oh, and we're never on long trips away from home... we are home :)
You could have bought my 30' sailboat and chased the Wynns!
We love the Wynns and their adventures (and so proud of our friends) - but blue water passage making doesn't really appeal to us. Loving our coastal cruising lifestyle :)
