I never thought of that until I read your comment. You are so right!
As far as strings go, in my opinion, they account for sustain, and maybe 30% of the tone on electric guitar.
The other 30% is pickups, and 40% your own fingers/playing.
Impact on tone: Strings,Pickups (I agree they're about equal)>Speaker/Cabinet>Amp>Player>Nut/Bridge>Tonewoods (on a solidbody electric, IMO... on acoustic and hollow body guitars tonewoods have much more influence on tone). I'd be open to considering reversing amp and player.
