Fascinating and impressing what you have achieved. In Norway where I am the tradition with this folk gowns are super strong. They just use correct materials for that, you know wool, skin, linen. Never modern materials. Google Norwegian bunads- and you see. Like your work a lot. Good luck continue developing that.

@Ratikant Sharma in my opinion when you wear the clothes it is nice to see that you enjoy it headdresses yes I say you can as long as it isn't like really realistic like how we have the homedancer headdress that is only worn by the dancer but if you choose to make it look accurate be careful where you wear it and maybe ask other natives opinions from the group where the design comes from women yeah go ahead it is just a costume after all you don't mean any harm.

I am not Native American but I wear ribbon dresses or buckskin and a headdress at Rendezvous. It is a gathering in celebration of a specific time in history and every attempt is made to be authentic to the time period. It absolutely is not done to disrespect or to appropriate your history. There is no fame or fortune to be had; just an assemblage of like-minded people, living primitively, sharing their knowledge and experience around a campfire in a temporary village of tipis and fur trader tents. Some folks knap arrowheads or make baskets or beautiful beaded items to continue the traditions and celebrate the beauty and artistry of your people. I love my headdress and buckskin dress and wish I could wear it often but I don’t out of respect for your culture. I sincerely hope you understand our intent and don’t find it offensive.

Bethany’s work is beautiful. I hope all people of every culture will teach their children to embrace their cultures and find the beauty in their heritage. Unfortunately, we have not been taught enough about Native American cultures. I guess we need to be educated about what is acceptable and what is offensive to them. I am Caucasian and I thought the feathered headdresses were very pretty. I had no idea that would offend a Native American. I have always admired their respect for our Earth and natural resources and wished my forefathers had listened and learned this wisdom. I truly don’t think any designer meant to offend or disrespect her beautiful culture. There needs to be more education regarding their feelings and what they consider offensive and what is acceptable so we can show respect for the beauty that is found in Native American culture. We are all members of the human race and we need to unite as God’s children. Division only weakens us as a country. Now, more than ever we must show love and respect for each other. Evil seeks to divide us and we are better than that. Education is the key to understanding. We are sadly lacking in education regarding our many cultures, however, it is never too late to learn from each other. Perhaps Bethany can enlighten us regarding what she finds offensive so that other designers can encourage and support her and avoid doing things to offend her. It makes me very sad to reflect on how unfairly Native Americans were treated and I pray for all people to show love and respect for all cultures. Our differences are what make us unique and beautiful. No intelligent person would purposefully offend anyone. Bethany could clearly shed light on her wonderful culture. Thanks for sharing your lovely fashions!

Patricia Burke agree buuuuut these designers that appropriate native culture patterns know what they’re doing...they know that these designs are Native American and they know that they are going to make money off of it because people view them as “pretty” nowadays when not too long ago those same patterns were frowned upon in mainstream media. So now that’s it’s trend they want to use Native American patterns to make profit without giving tribute/credit and it’s going to be okay? That’s never been okay regardless of race...so I disagree, that designers don’t know ALL designers have to do research on what they are creating, what patterns they’re using, who they’re targeting it to etc. So they know but choose to appropriate. Not only that but also I want to emphasize that it’s not up to Native Americans to educate others about how they’re oppressed, marginalized and their culture is being appropriated. It is up to individuals to unlearn their prejudice ways, especially when it’s talked about CONSTANTLY. It’s just many people don’t know oppression first had so they can choose to ignore it because it doesn’t affect them. Native Americans can’t choose to not be oppressed because the sole act of being indigenous is political because this country was founded on trying to erase their culture...with all respect it sounds like to me that you’re trying to justify cultural appropriation rather by saying no one seeks to harm anyone but in reality many people know about these harms and continue to do it because they are normalized...it’s to the point that the average American don’t even realize they’re racist because it’s normal to them (again this country was founded on racism) and when anyone tries to educate them they feel attacked...I also agree we’re all the human race but some of us like I mentioned above cannot escape racism or cultural appropriation because of this country being founded the way it was...therefore, we the people that understand, it is our responsibility to hold other people accountable and that includes not justifying cultural appropriation by saying designers didn’t mean to do that because those designers only cared about making money from other people’s designs. Also we can’t view ourselves solely as the human race as a whole just yet when some people are being marginalized and others holding a superiority complex to the level that they do not even realize how it is obviously racist to culturally appropriate. I know your intentions are good, which is why I pass you this information and took the time to respond to your comment. Because I hope you will walk as a light worker to get other Caucasians to understand their bad ways towards indigenous people because they almost ALWAYS feel attacked when we try to inform them. Thanks, and lots of love, sorry if it sounds like I’m upset, I may be projecting. However that is not my intention.

Hermes Padilla, Thanks for your enlightening response. As an amateur artist, I would be very upset if someone appropriated my work. I’ve said, for a long time, that any time money and material possessions take precedence over people , you have a recipe for disaster. Unfortunately, it seems we are currently experiencing a disaster. I pray for fairness, peace, respect, understanding and love among all of God’s children. I am old, but I have faith in many young people, who are working to make our world a better place. Take care & God bless.

Mexicans make some of the most awesome embroidered stuff and it's a lot of work, but all the clothing is one size fits all and all the same, I wish they sold the embroidered fabrics by the yards and may be let us used it make our own clothing since they are stubbornly not wanting to make money by making the same awesome embroidered art in different and more wearable dresses, blouses, skirts. I'm a woman that God made with broad shoulders, narrow hips long beautiful legs and anything with sleeves or skirts too short or too long make me look like a football player silhouette, the embroidered parts in a skirt or top needs to be placed just right for the garment to do me justice. I can't wear long hanging earrings because a have a wide short neck, so small earrings close to the earlobe is best for us women. sleeveless, v neck, sleeveless or wide straps are good for our shape. Advertiste and listen to your future customers. China will soon take over as they are doing to Mexican art and making it wearable everything, including shoes, hats and handbags, I know they will do blankets and sheets and all and will flood the market with their crap.

Many developing countries mass produce textiles, clothing, fashion. I know much of Primark clothing comes from Bangladesh and India. Many EU brands like H&M and Zara use Turkey, Malta, Eastern Europe as manufacturing bases. My Nikes are made in Vietnam or Cambodia. In the UK we even have sweatshops supplying cheap disposable clothing for brands like Boohoo and Nasty Gal. We'll soon be seeing products coming from Africa as other developing countries like China, India, Vietnam move beyond cheap mass production. It's part of a modern capitalist system fuelled by our consumer culture, or is it the other way round?

Your work is beautiful, but your heart is closed and limited. My ancestry is also native (Cherokee and Lenape) and I have no issues with others celebrating my culture through their modern day creative ways. I like your imagination and vision of what our classic loved ones would actually wear today. My only suggestion is for you to keep an open heart that our culture can be celebrated instead of owned and divided amongst the people. Think about it. How do you bring about love and respect for a culture of people? Resentment or tolerance? Hatred or love? The idea of appropriation is a modern man created idea. To believe such an idea is disrespectful to our culture in and of itself. Peace and love to you dear sister under one Spirit.

I am so confused about this , she designs clothing with native designs but yet is offended if you wear something that resembles native , I have a small portion of native blood and am not feeling comfortable wearing clothes with fringe beads or turquoise jewelry even wearing my long braids. I’m in my 60’s and am sad that we are upset at people for what they wear I also saw that wearing braids is African , I’m just sad that I grew up when we shared are cultures and lived in a melting pot . I really want to wear my moccasins but feel I might get verbally attacked . Is it ok to eat food from other cultures or is that wrong also , I’m confused .
