    This really moved me. I am from the subcontinent and you shot my people with such obvious warmth and humility. You can see it in the way they look at you and the way you look at them. I was utterly disarmed by your video.
    Ironically, I came here out of technical curiosity to see how the Mamiya 7ii handles documentary photography with people, as I hear everywhere on RUclips it is not meant for that. How you have so decisively proven that wrong. So much intimacy and beauty in the framing of people going about their day. Kudos.
    Two technical questions: (i) did you expose the Portra 800 film at box iso? Do you ever push color film? (ii) what lens were you mostly using for the portrait shots? 65mm? Or both lense equally?
    Again, thank you for this work.

    • @colinshootsfilm
      @colinshootsfilm  5 месяцев назад

      This comment means more to me than I can possibly express. Thank you.
      As far as Portra 800 (my favorite film in the world), I usually shoot it at box speed. I expose for the shadows when I can. Occasionally I’ll meter at 400, usually when it’s sunny out and I accidentally still have a roll in my camera haha.
      The beauty of this film is that you can meter at 1600 and develop normally, and you’ll still get a nearly perfect image. Often I just go with the slowest shutter speed I can get away with handheld, and I trust the film to give me a useable image. I cannot overstate the value of this in low light. Almost every night photo in this video was shot like this.
      As for lenses, my favorite and most used is the 43mm. 65mm would be next. The 65 is usually better for portraits, but the 43 is capable of a lot. Especially if you’re willing to get close.
      Side note, where in India are you? I just got my five year visa approved and will be back this year, maybe as soon as a few months.

    • @colinshootsfilm
      @colinshootsfilm  5 месяцев назад

      Oops I forgot to answer everything! The only color film I’ll push is Kodak Vision 500t, or any of the rebranded versions of this. Cinestill 800t etc.
      I always meter this film at 500, and have had basically perfect results shooting at 1000 and pushing a stop. If I’m desperate, I’ll meter at 2000 and push two stops. Still very good results.
      Pushed Portra can’t compete here, unfortunately.

    love this vid. i keep coming back to it bc im about to buy a mamiya 7. is the photo 02:19 on the 43mm? i assume the one at 08:00 is 43mm also. 09:51 is probably my favourite. crazy shot. 43mm?

    • @colinshootsfilm
      @colinshootsfilm  2 месяца назад +1

      Thank you! And I obviously support you buying the Mamiya haha.
      Okay so all three of these photos were on the 43. It’s my favorite lens by a wide margin. But the third one, your favorite, is a crop. It’s funny, because this is the only photo in the entire video that I cropped more than leveling the horizon or something. So I’m guessing the final image is probably closer to what the 65 would see.
      I hope that makes sense.

    When you left the airport in India we’re you able to get your exposed film hand checked? Or did they make you put it through the X-ray machine?

    • @colinshootsfilm
      @colinshootsfilm  11 месяцев назад

      Short answer: I was able to get a hand check on every single flight I took in India. I believe I had nine flights while there, hand check every single time.
      Long answer: I’ll add this, because I think its useful. I was traveling a lot the last year or so, all over the world. I usually had around 400 rolls of film with me, some fresh and some exposed. Fast film is supposedly the most affected by airport scans, and many of my rolls were Portra 800.
      Several airports would not allow me to hand check. Airports in Kazakhstan, Albania, UAE, etc. As a result, many of the rolls went through no less than ten x-ray scans. All of them were fine. I could see no difference between these rolls and fresh ones that were never sent through an x-ray.
      The only exception were the rolls I pushed to 3200. They were severely fried haha.
      I guess what I’m saying is, don’t worry about the airport x-rays. Their negative effect is highly dramatized, especially for film developed at box speed.

    great stuff mate! have a trip to india coming up in feb and am going to take the mamiya 7 and my 50/80 + M6. how do you go about focusing with the external viewfinder? did it take you out of the moment for many shots? And are your people portraits more candid or did you ask permission?

    • @colinshootsfilm
      @colinshootsfilm  10 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks! I actually love the external viewfinder. It doesn't take me out of the moment too often, especially during the day when I can be at f8 or f11 and zone focus. At night, I have to be more precise. Especially since my shutter speed is often 1/8 or even 1/4, and I'm obviously wide open. In those situations, I'll usually try to pick my spot and focus first, if possible.
      The portraits are a mix. There are some where there was obviously communication prior, and some where I got as close as possible and hoped they wouldn't notice until after I took the photo haha. I prefer the second option because it's more organic, but it's not always a possibility.
      Where are you going in February? I might be in India at the same time.

      Even with 800 speed film, I was often shooting handheld at 1/8 or even 1/4 of a second.
