This is my opinion: Nfs Hot Pursuit 2010 has done amazing jub with the graphics and with the cars and sounds. Like the nfshp is one of my favorite games. I really love those downshifts and sounds on every car! Graphics just looks stunning! Amazing effects and weather system! That's why I love that game because it has a lot of challenging stuff in it and it is very fun to play!
I do agree that is not a bad game, but I wouldn't call it a great one either. The graphics are indeed very good but has nothing more. Still a good job from Criterion to bring up a game that was giving awful games since 2007

Also you can use this forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/18249-tutorial-how-to-setup-eax-for-tdm-on-any-soundcard/ to fix crackling issues in NFS2 and enhance sound in any older game (I wouldn't aim for newer than Carbon) or even enable EAX on a Windows newer than XP. The thread is for another game, but if you can use common sense then you'll figure it out. Fun fact, the Steam version of Undercover has fixed shadows (at least according to 379Felipe) and seems to have best mod compatibility (for any pirates use the PROPHET release) and you can the ThirteenAG Generic Fix to remove the bloom and fix some issues, there's also a PS version which already includes the MultiFix. Sorry for long comment.

Some engines could sound like V8 despite are V12. For example AMG. If you talking about NFS MW 2005 Aston Martin DB9 sounds exactly like Vauxhall Monaro. At least in NFS Carbon is more accurate.

The other factor would be that it depends on the car ITSELF. Cars are increasingly getting more turbocharged and therefore would be lower pitched.
