Being a huge fan of sim-drifting, and having started out on a control pad in Horizon 3 and ended up drifting for the last two years in Assetto on a Fanatec direct drive, I played the beta of Solar Crown with a real interest in the handling, and the drifting especially. And in the feedback I left a really long note on how the drifting just wasn't working in TDU, specifically because the cars just grip up far too quickly. It's a slightly less extreme version of what The Crew Motorfest does with its handling model; it just wants your car to grip all the time, and both games are terrified of making the player deal with momentum and weight.
So I left that long note in the feedback, and then a fortnight or so later the devs of TDU SC released a video of someone drifting on a wheel in TDU, a video dedicated to the drifting in the game. And it looked really improved, it looked impressive, so I was quite hopeful that they'd taken some of the feedback from myself and players like me and corrected the physics.
But from playing the demo the physics are just as disappointing as they were in the beta. Any kind of proper drifting is basically impossible, even with something like a 350z, which should be ideal for sliding.
You might think drifting isn't that important in a racing game, and all you care about is racing and driving in a straight line, but the way a game's physics deal with traction loss is crucial, and if they mess it up it basically means the racing handling won't feel right either. If the drifting doesn't feel right then the racing won't feel right either.

They have been listening to feedback for years, that's how most of the little features and details made it into the game, such as vehicle controls, car dealerships and so on. You can be sure that they are listening, also the cars probably grip too quickly because of the tires, since there are different types of tires in the game. I'd assume the standard tires are Sport tires, and then maybe you can get grippier tires, drifting or classic tires, offroad tires... I haven't played and don't know the options, bit I wouldn't be surprised if they were there

@@andreasmoller9798 To me, it's a long way away from Horizon.
Sure Horizon isn't a sim like Assetto, or even something like Gran Turismo. But Horizon gives the cars weight and momentum, and it models proper physics. And that means that In Horizon you can do pretty much all the things you can do in a real sim - like trail braking, slip angle driving, reverse entry drifts, etc.
Horizon nailed the physics a long time ago and they've been honing it ever since. TDU:SC is bringing in this new physics model and it's not fair to compare it to an established series like Horizon...but life isn't fair, and it feels like they've botched it to me.

I didn't play it yet since I'm on PS5, but I saw BlackPanthaa play it and he said the physics feel somewhere in between Forza and Gran Turismo, and I'd say I agree from seeing how the cars behave in different situations. I can tell that they let go when you give it too much gas, and they will for sure spin out if you aren't csreful, but they also grip back up if you let go off the gas (I can't tell if it requires throotle work due to engine braking or if just letting go will save it, but it isn't a big deal for me since it's still probably the most realistic physics in an open world driving game). I never played Forza, but from watching it, the cars look like they're driving on soap and always sliding around. I had a similar feeling when I tried The Crew Motorfest. While the driving felt overall nice and the wheel control was really good, I always felt like I was taking turns sliding around, almost like Project CARS 1 felt. TDU doesn't seem to have that kind of handling.

Your graphics look much better than what I am experiencing, I wonder if you got a different build than the one that is publicly available, either that or you have a great computer. Seeing how it looks on yours gives me a little hope that the end product might be decent. I know mine looks like a chinese knock-off of what was advertised and it still lags pretty badly but there is something promising trying to peek through. I like the idea that this might end up being a more casual experience than, say, Motorfest, with weekly competitive summits. My worry is that I want to get it for PS5 but I do not have PS+ and I get the impression that the game will not be playable without it.

People throw around the term arcade too loosely and have no idea what a arcade game truly is and how it handles the only examples we have nowadays is Need For Speed. This game would be considered Simcade and leaning more towards sim than arcade. Their are way too many sim features in the game for it to be a pure arcade game. The penalties alone for driving through or over certain objects shows it’s not a pure arcade game. Then the tuning and settings to your cars is not seen in arcade games at all it’s always simple with over the top results. The handling over certain terrain effects your driving and the weather effects your driving in arcade racers nothing I said matters in those games. Those are just too many penalties for it to be a arcade racer it’s definitely a Simcade racer. The arcade comes into effect with things like people cars not being totaled from terrible driving. In sim racers the amount of damage you cause to your cars effects it a lot to the ping you can total your car completely.

i played 5 hours of TDU in the last few days, and tbh, apart from the performance issues nad crashes, i think if they play their card rigth we could have a very solid game honestly, its a shame it ll be online only, but i kindfa liked the handling moldel, it still needs some twicks mostly on the oversteer aspect, the doesnt counter steer regardless of what you do, but try out driving any AWD car and the handling shines a bit, if they fix this issues with oversteer we ll have a solid model to play. The sounds of the cars are wonderfull, if all of thge cars on the full version have these good sounds it ll prob be one of the best sounding racing games, the turbo sounds are the best i"ve seen in any game, it adapts on the RPM u are (just like irl) ive never seen any game (apart from modded asseto corsa) to have these details. Overall the game have some good points and some bad points, if they fix some of the issues till launch we can have a fun experience

For those who’ve played it and didn’t like the handling: rebind inputs for steering left & right. This gets rids of the (ridiculous) deadzone.
Lowering the steering sensitivity helps to get rid of the twitchy behavior, but you can’t see what you’re changing.
Under keybinds, go to steering l/r, press advanced, hold your left stick/key to the left for like a second, go back & try it. I’m fairly sure you need to go back to settings to see the changes.
I’m at -1.9 (not risking changing it) and my game feels completely different.
No clue why the devs didn’t default to a more “Forza-like” setting, but it’s SO much more promising when the handling doesn’t suck.
I’d assume -1.8 or -1.7 would be optimal, but there’s currently no way of actually seeing what you’re changing (since the advanced menu just doesn’t show).

People need to realize this when they compare this game to the others, also this is the first one they have developed, not the 5th one. There are some good bits and bad bits right now. However they are proactivly dropping patches and have promised certain things either before or after launch. For me, the handling is sim-cade which suits the game, the map is great and races are okay too, the ai needs to be harder imo. The graphics need to be optimised but this happens late in the dev process. Stuff like dealerships, workshops and hotel are great social hubs to chat to others and hang around.
