@@mattkoch8363 I thought carrick was rock, like Carrick Fergus in N. Ireland? And that Glen is the river in the valley like Bushmill at Bushmills Distillery? I’m not saying you’re wrong, just that was my understanding when we visited Ireland.
Glen comes from a Gaelic word that means ‘in the valley’. So many distilleries like to name themselves after the valley they’re in. For example, Glengoyne just means ‘in the valley of goyne’.

Love the “in progress” improvements on the basement bourbon bar. I see others have commented that a Glenn is a valley the water flowed through. Makes me think of Kentucky and how so many bourbons have CREEK in the name for the same water-source reason. Glennscreek, Knob Creek, Rowan’s Creek, Hardin’s Creek, etc.
@slbdrinks I love Old Line, Mark is a great guy making some fantastic American single malt. Not to far from the distillery and did their bottle your own event last month. I think I know what you got coming you're way and I'm excited for that one too!
I was lucky enough to snag a Tanager this Christmas. I was drawn and turned down lots of BTAC and other highly allocated bottles for it. This is the 1st production and maybe the last. All the other BTAC and allocated bottles drop annually. I haven’t opened it yet though. Waiting for a special occasion. The RD1 is my favorite amburana I’ve tried. I did a 4 way blind against several others and it was by far the best. It’s a one pour for me as well.
New barrel top on the back of the bar. 'Glen' is the Scottish term for a valley. Many have a U-shape and were gouged into existence by huge glaciers that ground down the mountains. The glaciers finally departed at the end of the last ice age 11,500 years ago.
Many Scotch whiskies have "glen" in the name because distilleries are often built in glens. The bottom of a valley is a good place to build a distillery because it has lots of water, which is needed to make whisky. Glens are usually long and narrow valleys with gently sloped sides. They are different from ravines, which are deep and have steep sides (i just copied and pasted definitions not my own)
The Glencairn whisky glass is a style of glass intended for drinking whisky, developed and produced by Glencairn Crystal Ltd. A Glencairn is a gravestone.
Love the blind tastings. And seeing a picture of what you are tasting is appreciated. Don't know hard it is to edit in pictures and stuff. But after the picture is "parked" in the lower left, the bottle and description are half off my screen. Is it possible to add some text alongside the bottle picture giving the proof and the price you paid? Just a suggestion.
What blows me away about the Tanager is that it’s not finished in anything. How the hell they got that complex flavor out of different corns and their slow water reduction is BONKERS!
onsider this ...... Try asking a coffee roaster how they get strawberry or grape tastes out of coffee beans. Coffee beans, depending upon the bean, have an array of 1000 plus different tastes.
@@JE-western-riderplease enlighten me on what coffee might have those notes - I have never been a huge coffee drinker and go through phases where I drink it and then don’t for a while etc. I am in the far NE in the US and wonder what brand of coffee might impart those flavors! Very curious. Thanks
Scotch whiskey that is peated and/or uses water that has natural flowed through the heather and peat of fields of Scotland are composed of and tastes like phenolic compounds. These compounds reminds of old fashioned white school paste. Yuk! Just give me a good ole bourbon! 😛😜🤪
2:26 Whenever I pour a glass of Laphroaig I don't need to nose it to get that glorious aroma. I think it smells good, though I wasn't sure the first time I had a glass, and I can see why some people would loathe peated whisky. 8:08 That Glenallachie is mighty dark for a Scottish whisky. OTOH it is 18 years old... Trenton, laddie, ye maun ken the glen. 😂🏴 12:15 I grew up with cinnamon toast. But we used cinnamon sugar, mixing the two until the spice and sweet were just right. 🙂 13:35 I'm Clan Mackay myself. 😂 I've not had any amburana whisky, but it sounds like it's sort of like peat - either you like it or you don't.
Most Scottish and Irish place names come from the indigenous Gaelic languages. Glen comes from the Gaelic word ‘Gleann’ which means ‘Valley’. Glenallachie for example means ‘Valley of the rocks’ when you translate it back to Gaelic. Most Scottish distilleries and their products will feature some form of Gaelic wording and some are easier than others to pronounce!
In Scotland, "glen" signifies a "valley" in the Gaelic language, and is therefore a common place name found throughout the country, particularly associated with the mountainous regions, where many distilleries are located, leading to numerous Scotch whiskies being named with "Glen" as a prefix due to the connection between the quality water found in these valleys and the whisky production process; essentially, "Glen" in a whisky name indicates a Scottish origin and often implies a high quality product.
Glen means valley in the Scottish language and the other half of the brand usually means something else. So it would mean Valley of something. For example, Glenfiddich means Valley of the Deer!
I'm interested in non peated Scotches, that being said, are the rickhiuses in Scotland tempersture controlled ? If not, maybe the freezing temps in Scotland have something to do with their flavor, maybe thats why they consistently age theirs over 15 + years ? IDK.
I went to Whiskey cake in San Antonio for my birthday and ordered a flight with Rare Breed in it. Guessing the servers hand writing is bad because I got Red Breast instead. Wanted all bourbons but the RB ended up being #2 for me. Might have to give Irish whiskey a shot.
