Sir Syed Ahmad Khan CSI (Urdu: سر سید احمد خان; 17 October 1817 - 27 March 1898), commonly known as Sir Syed, was an Indian Muslim pragmatist,[1] Islamic modernist,[2][3] philosopher and social activist of nineteenth century India. He worked for the British East India Company and was one of the founders of the Aligarh Muslim University. In 1842, Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar-II conferred upon Sir Syed the title of Javad-ud Daulah, maintaining the title originally conferred upon Sir Syed's grandfather Syed Hadi by Emperor Shah Alam II around the middle of the 18th century.
In addition, the Emperor added the title of Arif Jang. The conferment of these titles was symbolic of Sir Syed's incorporation into the nobility of Delhi.[4]
Born into nobility, Sir Syed earned a reputation as a distinguished scholar while working as a jurist for the British East India Company's rule in India. During the Indian Rebellion of 1857, he remained loyal to the British Empire and was noted for his actions in saving European lives.[5] After the rebellion, he penned the booklet The Causes of the Indian Mutiny - a daring critique, at the time, of British policies that he blamed for causing the revolt. Believing that the future of Muslims was threatened by the rigidity of their orthodox outlook, Sir Syed began promoting Western-style scientific education by founding modern schools and journals and organising Muslim entrepreneurs. Towards this goal, Sir Syed founded Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College in 1875 with the aim of promoting social, scientific, and economic development of Indian Muslims which later developed into the famous Aligarh Muslim University.
Influential Hindu and Muslim politicians of his time viewed Sir Syed with great suspicion, since he called upon Muslims to loyally serve the British Empire. He denounced nationalist organisations such as the Indian Congress for giving only token representation to the Indian Muslim community. Sir Syed promoted the adoption of Urdu as the lingua franca of all Indian Muslims, and mentored a rising generation of Muslim politicians and entrepreneurs. Prior to the Hindi-Urdu controversy, he was interested in the education of both Muslims and Hindus, and visualised India as a "beautiful bride, whose one eye was Hindu and, the other, Muslim". As a result of this view, he was regarded as a reformer and nationalist leader.
There was a sudden change in Sir Syed's views after the Hindi-Urdu controversy: his education and reformist policies became Muslim-specific and he fought for the status of Urdu. His biographer, Hali, wrote, "One day as Sir Syed was discussing educational affairs of Muslims with Mr. Shakespeare - the then Commissioner of Banaras - Mr. Shakespeare looked surprised and asked him, "This is the first time when I have heard you talking specifically about Muslims. Before this you used to talk about the welfare of the common Indians. Sir Syed then told him, "Now I am convinced that the two communities Muslims and Hindus will not put their hearts in any venture together. This is nothing it is just the beginning, in the coming times an ever increasing hatred and animosity appears on the horizon simply because of those who are regarded as educated. Those who will be around will witness it.", (Hali, 1993).[6] Overall Sir Syed is hailed as the father of the Two Nation Theory and one of the founding fathers of Pakistan, along with Allama Iqbal and Muhammad Ali Jinnah.[7]
The Muslim community needs more people like him. At least AMU alumni working in good positions should take more responsibility and take up his work further.

Sorry Aligarians: Sir Syed Dream in dilemma.
These are some thoughts emitting out of my mind on this Sir Syed Day as of last year. Aligarians may disagree but at least read it, please do not ignore it.:-
Aligarians are celebrating SS day this year as they had celebrated in the past since several years.
However it is a matter of retrospection whether the dream of Sir Syed has been fulfilled by the Aligarians. The following questions are thrown before Aligarians to find out the answer.
Whether Aligs could bring excellence in their achievements in any field. Blowing one's own horn can not deny the hard facts.
1. Does AMU Engineering College stand any where in all India Ranking ? I am not asking international ranking!
2. How it's Medical College is rated at All India ranking?
3. Its Management faculty nowhere stand before national ratings.
4.What one wing of a JNU hostel send its students for UPSC competition, the whole AMU campus can't match, leave apart the reaching to the interview at final level.
4.How many students of its Mento Circle School competed in JEE, JEE - Advance, NDA, AIPMT, NEET, C- LAT , NSTSS, Olympiad etc so far?
5. How many of its faculty members' research papers acclaimed nationally or internationally?
6. What is its share in national sports. How many young it could send to the National Sports Academy so far?
7. What is the standard of their publication. How many books on various subjects it could bring out yearly?
8. Since Rajiv Gandhi's time the IT industries got impetus in India, what and how AMU could leave its imprint on IT sector so far whereas its Computer Centre is one of the oldest in the country. Nothing is visible.
9. Any contribution in space technology, environment technology etc.
10. AMU boast an institute of Oil Technology built with the assistance of UAE - Ameer but it ranks no where at national/ international level.
11. Even In Urdu literature & language (post independence) also it failed to produce any world class literature, what to speak producing literature in any other language.
12. In Islamic jurisprudence also its contribution is un impressionable. It failed to show any light before the Muslim religious section as well as Indian Legal fraternity.
13. Any of Aligadh graduate ever got to have a glimpse of BARC, Indian Institute of Science, Banglore, Indian Statistical Institutes, Kol, Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kol, Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai, DRDO et all ?
14. How many Aligarh graduates qualify in a year in prestigious management institutes through CAT & MAT and Indian Military Academy?
15. Aligadh counting of scientists end on Zahoor Qasim and Obaid Siddiqui.
In my opinion AMU has not succeeded to shed its mediocrity as yet and failed to give any political , religio - political, social, academic, scientific and technologic leadership before even Muslim society, leave aside the national/ international society which shows that the dream of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan is yet to fructify.
Some Aligarians may cite the Times ranking announced during the Vice Chancellor ship of Lt. Col. General Zameer Uddin Shah but it was for a short sojourn, it didn’t ignite the competitive sprit of Aligarians so far. It was too little to leave an impression of enduring excellence.
Many Aligarians may differ with arguments but retrospection can not be countered by the arguments.
