love it. I'm about to set fire to this latin percussion track I have sitting on the drum rack....with this, and some tape saturation?? it's a habanero fire wrap
Excellent idea for people who can't afford superior drummer or programs like that. This is what makes those programs great and now we can do it at no extra cost :)
Brother! Your tutorials are so helpful, such unique techniques, and really quality music. Both you and Mr. Bill make the best tutorials I've found...is it the accent? Is that what makes you both such badasses? If I work on my accent, will I too become a badass?
This is good stuff. Although I love the content of your videos, they always make me realize how little I know about the different features on ableton!!
I thought it was going to have some tips about actually programming the fill sequence, but still a really informative video, never thought about using impulse like that! :)
+fraxyl i think it's best to just kinda mess around with the keyboard once you have it setup because every drum fill is different and it really depends on the kind of style of music you are writing.
Thanks Slynk, this is really useful man. Have you found a way of mapping other things to the macros like decay or drive? Would be great to do this to be able to have slightly different accented hits.
When i try it's like the impule makes the attack and loudness much tighter in the sample?.. Like if you only build with the drumrack as usual and put in samples it doesnt sound the same. It's like he Impulse makes it more compressed
When I record the midi track with this adg it keeps getting randomized everytime I play it. And if I turn the randomization off it just plays one type of tom, snare and kick. Does anyone know the answer to solving this problem?
Great video. I'm still at the very beginning of learning how to program drums....I downloaded your drum rack, but it comes into my computer as an .adg file...? Should I just drag and drop that into my ableton? I've been trying, but nothing has worked. Thank you for any help. And thanks for sharing!
+1 - Drag n drop method isn't working for me either : / at least we know how to build it from scratch now but i would really like to see how u get Slynky wid it!
Slynk! There is a faster way to do this. The "copy tp sibling" method should work right? If you didn't know about that, google it. Some scripting shit (:
The copy to siblings feature only works with samplers/simplers inside a drum rack. It doesn't work with Impulses at all, regardless of it being inside of a drum rack or not. Also the copy value to siblings does not apply macro settings either. So if you have 16 samplers in a drum rack and you go to one and set the panning to marco knob 1 for example and then click copy value to siblings it will not map all the other knobs to macro knob 1. Therefore, the only way to macro knobs in all 8 cells of an impulse is to click and do every single one manually.
Naa fuck that. I rarely tune drums. SOMETIMES I tune my kick and snare but it depends on the style of song I'm writing. Tuning drum rolls/fills is a waste of time in my opinion.
Well I wouldn't say tuning drum rolls it wrong. It really depends on your style of music. Maybe you're going for a Tipper kind of vibe where the percussion is kind of the melody.
Nice tut. One question. Can I still use the choke feature with impulse running? It's driving me nuts that I can't get my high hats to cut each other off.
From what I've been reading so far is that impulse doesn't react with choke sadly. So the work around I'm using now is resampling the hats then using a sampler in the drum rack. I lose a little bit of the feel of the drums so I'll still be looking for other methods but it's what I got so far. If you find something different I'd love to hear it. And thanks for making these videos Slynk. You really opened my mind to some possibilities I've never thought of.
+Michael Hoaglund Hmm.. you're right. You can't use the choke feature of a drum rack with impulse. Very weird. 1) What you could also do is record the drum fill how you like it into midi. Then set all the cells decay time to 0. Then go in and edit the midi so the length of the notes are legato but end before the next sound. Kind of like a manual choke. 2) You could also try setting up a series of sidechain compressors but it wont be stopping the sound completely. 3) Or another idea is, you could use a sampler with several different samples set to different notes and use a the same kind of midi randomizer plugin before, thus avoiding using impulse, using a sampler instead. But it depends on what you're trying to do. If you are just producing a track then option number one is really easy. If you are playing live, I think option 3 would be best. But number 2 could have an interesting style to it.
Does anyone know how to get the samples inside impulse to choke one another? Say for instance the cymbals like in the video each time you play it? Thanks for your help!
I'm not familiar with this specific program, but if there is a mode called legato that would be a place to start. Also if there is a gate setting turn that on and then the drum hit will only play for as long as the note is held.
+br0k3nf1ng3r yep. Loops and single acoustic drum hits. Check the demo. soundcloud.com/slynk/slynk-presents-ultimate-funky-glitch-hop-futureloops-sample-pack-out-now
+mr Leeway The acoustic drum samples are from my huge sample pack on Futureloops. www.futureloops.com/product-slynk-presents-ultimate-funky-glitch-hop.php
the midi effect called "scale" lets u pick any key to stay within. and since the impulse cells are only triggered when white keys are selected, he made sure to choose C major so he can access all 8 cells with it. this method is completely atonal and he isnt actually changing the pitch of his drums to fit a c major scale, thats just how the script for that specific midi effect works.
I thought this was so cool, even got 1/4 of my standard rock drum rack converted to this method. But then I discovered that the choke groups that I'd established for my standard rock drum rack stopped working. This is fatal if it can't be made to work. Some randomness to the samples is great, but not at the expense of losing chokes. Is there any way for the choke groups to still work with this?
Choke only works with sampler or simpler I believe. So you could use a sampler with multiple samples and a m4l lfo to randomly select a sample within each sampler.
+Denis A I've changed the link to a direct Dropbox link. I wanted to experiment with adfly links to hopefully earn something from this video but apparently it hasn't gone too well. Thanks for the feedback.
This is an incredible technique! These types of videos are always appreciated
You make the most interesting tutorials! always something new and genius
I wish I could like videos twice. Awesome man!
Create another account? :P Thanks bud
You're the best man! Thanks for these awesome tutorials.
love it. I'm about to set fire to this latin percussion track I have sitting on the drum rack....with this, and some tape saturation?? it's a habanero fire wrap
chizknocka would definitely love to hear how it turned out! Can’t wait to try this on my project as well 🙌🏼
Excellent idea for people who can't afford superior drummer or programs like that. This is what makes those programs great and now we can do it at no extra cost :)
Much appreciation, notwithstanding my being late to the party!
This is so useful! thank you so much

+Bassline Drift LOL I don't think it's the accent. Thanks for watching :)
This is good stuff. Although I love the content of your videos, they always make me realize how little I know about the different features on ableton!!
Very nice video. This make my production technique quiet smoother
best channel
You are my new best friend forever! Thank you Slynk!
Been waiting for a kick as tutorial for drum processing xD thanks bro!
I need to try this out. Thanks :)
Super helpful. You're fantastic. Thank you.
Ingenious work! They really sound great!
How did you know about Impulse and the C Major scale?
and thank you again for great tool and tutorial

Wow, that great, keep up the tuts!
+TheSoundEngineAF cheers!
this was so helpful dude thank u so much!
Can you please provide me the link to the download of this rack..great work dude as always

You're so funky awesome and helpful
Thanks SSSOoooooo Much!! Just what I wanted !! Love your program Man!!
GENIUS. thank u
As a rock drummer, I've always been very critical of the in the box/de-humanized drum sound …BUT you killed iron this one! Thanks for sharing.
Music is music.
Hi! i liked your video a lot, how do you use that drumrack? i downloaded but don't know in wich folder to put it, thank you!
Cool. Thank you very very much.
This is seriously so helpful man, thank you so fucking much.
Brilliant!
so good!!!!
Thanks Slynk
Thanks Slynk, this is really useful man. Have you found a way of mapping other things to the macros like decay or drive? Would be great to do this to be able to have slightly different accented hits.
This is exactly what i wanted!!!! :D
You know, Ive never found a use for Impulse until now haha
Cool. Thanks :)
THX dude!!!! nice skill!!!!!
Sei un grande!

Nice!
thanks for the info

Works fine for me. Could you guys be running an older version of Ableton? Go to the Ableton website and download the latest version and try again.
Can I combine an impuls with a simpler or sampler?
u're the best!
I downloaded the file but there wasno Drum Rack in the download. Only Random and the C Major Scale
because you put the scale in the battery? keep the same ton?
Slynk! There is a faster way to do this. The "copy tp sibling" method should work right? If you didn't know about that, google it. Some scripting shit (:
copy to sibling*
+Sprangeful +Slynk
Yeah check that out, saves so much time!
bit(.)ly/1rBIFj1
I have 9.6.1 and cant seem to get that to work. I have done everything by the book. Any ideas?
The copy to siblings feature only works with samplers/simplers inside a drum rack. It doesn't work with Impulses at all, regardless of it being inside of a drum rack or not. Goodjob :)
Do you have to tune everything to the right scale you're working with?
Naa fuck that. I rarely tune drums. SOMETIMES I tune my kick and snare but it depends on the style of song I'm writing. Tuning drum rolls/fills is a waste of time in my opinion.
Slynk Good to know. I've been doing it wrong! Thanks dude
Well I wouldn't say tuning drum rolls it wrong. It really depends on your style of music. Maybe you're going for a Tipper kind of vibe where the percussion is kind of the melody.

Nahhh this shit fire fham❗️
Nice tut. One question. Can I still use the choke feature with impulse running? It's driving me nuts that I can't get my high hats to cut each other off.

Ableton wont let me add impulse and a drum track to a single midi track? Whats going wrong? You just start the video with both of them.
you have to put it right next to the drum rack, where it says 'Drop Instrument or Sample here'
nice
tight
You magnificent son of a drum
cool
not every note is playing when i use it in pianoroll.why? btw this is dope
How do you design the midi?
Does anyone know how to get the samples inside impulse to choke one another? Say for instance the cymbals like in the video each time you play it? Thanks for your help!
I'm not familiar with this specific program, but if there is a mode called legato that would be a place to start. Also if there is a gate setting turn that on and then the drum hit will only play for as long as the note is held.
Do you have a video on midi effects and audio?
i'd love to have those drum samples man
+br0k3nf1ng3r why not buy my sample pack?
www.futureloops.com/product-slynk-presents-ultimate-funky-glitch-hop.php
it has the live drum kit samples from this? that you recorded?
+br0k3nf1ng3r yep. Loops and single acoustic drum hits. Check the demo.

Awesome man!! I'll definitely check that out then, hopefully I can get the $43ish to grab it sometime soon!!! Thanks for the assistance!
Why i cant place the rack?
It's no longer available. Every time I try to look for cool racks this is always the case.
genius....
Sweeeeeet!
como se llama la. aplicasion
I don't understand how anyone could thumb down this.
wizard
what is the pack from futureloops which contains these acoustic drum samples? :)
+mr Leeway The acoustic drum samples are from my huge sample pack on Futureloops. www.futureloops.com/product-slynk-presents-ultimate-funky-glitch-hop.php
Why was C Major used here? I don't understand why scale was used on drums?

+S†EPFΔM STUDiO bravo my dude. Well explained.
I think the one dislike for this video comes courtesy of Mr. Bill, lol.
Where to get those samples at????
Any idea how to use the 'Choke' option with this method?
I thought this was so cool, even got 1/4 of my standard rock drum rack converted to this method. But then I discovered that the choke groups that I'd established for my standard rock drum rack stopped working. This is fatal if it can't be made to work. 3:38 sounds like black panther lol
can you make a video doing the same thing but with snares
Verrrrrrrrry c0@!
Slynk, are you vegan?
No.
Meat all day son!
(Veggies a'ight)
WTF Slynk!!! the progect file with a virus! I downloaded my computer and almost died
+Slynk We had to just give a link to your Dropbox!!!!
+Denis A I've changed the link to a direct Dropbox link. I wanted to experiment with adfly links to hopefully earn something from this video but apparently it hasn't gone too well. Thanks for the feedback.
love your work
