Thor is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character, based on the Norse mythological deity of the same name, is the Asgardian god of thunder and possesses the enchanted hammer Mjolnir, which grants him the ability of flight and weather manipulation amongst his other superhuman attributes.
The amount of respect beta ray bill has for Odinson to offer his hammer was amazing. Very cool moment.

But sometimes the name and descriptive title are one and the same. It's not often the case in english, but for other languages like chinese, the names are often made to be descriptive of what the parents hope the child would be like.

The family name Armstrong for instance was started as a semi title/clan name. In olden times in parts of Europe you'd just go by your name like John or Thor. That was it.
So a guy named John might have earned the title Armstrong (John Armstrong) or used the family name Jackson, son of Jack based on the patriarch of their family.
Your reasonings are as weak as the writers trying to justify this stupid bullshit.
This is just crying over semantics. The writers have simply merged the iconography and connotations of the name Thor and God of thunder together. Instead of saying, she has taken up the mantle of god of thunder they simply refer to it as Thor because the name carries a stronger depiction of what she becomes than God of thunder does.
Marval has introduced several divine pantheons from Greek to Japanese, many of which have their own gods of thunder so the term is a far vaguer indication of who Jane becomes. It''s the same reason that the Thor Corps is named that and not The gods of thunder, it better informs the reader of the mentality, powers and trajectory of the character(s) taking up the name.simple.

Thor is clearly a name, not a title. That is saying Tony is a title, not "Iron Man".
Their children will be named "(name) Odinson".
Odinson works as a surname, because they are still descendants of Odin.

My issue with the direction Thor went is that Thor is supposed to be his name and NOT a title. Odinson is a title meaning " son of Odin" such as old English titles like " John of York".
Since the comic character Thor is based on a Nordic god, it infuriates me that he completely strayed so far from the source material.
That alone turned me off to the new Female Thor.

Thor is both a name and title. The name of Thor Odinson is well... Thor. However, it depends on how he lives up to that name. That is when Thor becomes a title. If he does not live up to his name and essentially succeed Odin, then Thor does not deserve the title of "Thor" or "God of Thunder." He may still go by the name of Thor when cast out of Asgard or when he loses his hammer, but at that point he no longer holds or deserves the title of Thor. The Title of Thor correlates with "Odinson." If he disgraces himself or acts out of line to a certain point, he no longer is deserving of being called Thor Odinson. Thus he loses the title of Thor Odinson, and is only by the name of Thor. This is all essentially what his name means. His name is Thor Odinson, but if he does something to lose the title of God of Thunder; then he loses his worthiness of the title "Thor." Thus, due to his name both being a Name and a Title, it is able to be passed down when another person takes up the earthly mantle of the hero. There is also the fact he is called Thor, and if Jane Foster or someone else takes up the mantle then they either go by Thor or go by something else that strays them farther from actually being a successor.

Really good points from both you guys. Heh... its funny; in a way... Thor NOT being full of him self was his over arching goal for a long time in his character's run (way back) AND its the very thing that ends up not making him worthy.
So I wonder if it will turn into a.... lets say math/algebra equation... that once you truly see the equation (really comprehend it) from BOTH sides ~ you will finally TRULY be able to be both things (worthy and humble). Just like an equation... if you read ONE way, you are only seeing half of it. If you read it the other way the opposite direction, again... you only see half. But when you see it BOTH WAYS ~ ie you just see the equation in its entire and not in a linear fashion; you TRULY will comprehend what the equation truly is.
So it may seem simple on its surface, but can prove very difficult on deeper contemplation . Kinda like the riddle/dilemma of "trying to look left, AND right at the dame time".
So yeah, CRAZY random metaphor... i know. But I think it is one way that Thor will eventually (maybe WAY down the road) will be able to become worthy to wield his hammer again. While ALSO maintain his humility.

I'm kinda shakey on this "title" thing. Yes, the superhero titles are titles and other characters have taken up the mantle of certain heroes, but the titles are intrinsically attached to the characters. Steve Rogers is Captain America. Has there been other Captain America's? Yes. But he is still Captain America. With Thor its even more appropriate because that is his actual name. It's not a mantle or an identity, it's the name of a god. Odinson may be stripped of his ability to lift Mjolnir, but that doesn't mean he is no longer "Thor." It's his name. He has been stripped of his power, not his name. The line of text on the hammer specifically states who ever is worthy will attain "the power of Thor" which says nothing about gaining or loosing a title or name.
I still see Thor (Proper Thor) as the only Thor regardless of what the current writer says. Thor is his name, it is not a title and has never been a title. Foster is no more than a publicity stunt and once Marvel gets back on track and returns Thor's power to him as it should be the story will go on and be much better for it.

Thor has relayed on Mjolnir too much , which he has said in his past comics himself. Thor is still Thor with and without Mjolnir , he just needs to gain his confidence again to get his abilities back which he does in Unworthy Thor issue 5. Also why can't THOR fly without Mjolnir? He has done it before by controlling the Wind like Storm , and wouldn't every time Thor throws Mjolnir in mid air make him fall?

I personally dislike Jane Foster and the direction Marvel has gone with its Social Justice campaign. Hopefully marvel gets back to some basics... I like the Spiderverse epic, the Marvel Zombies, and the classic tales. Deadpool seems to be the only serious marvel comic out there....but hey... Evil Empire looks interesting.

So apparently this run is what Marvel is going to adapt for Thor: Love and Thunder. While it’s a good story, I have no clue how they plan to do it. Comic Thor gets his powers from the Hammer, whereas in the MCU, the Hammer is powered by Thor. Also, it doesn’t exist anymore.

Until the final days of Ragnarok, I will continually say that Thor is a name, this title debacle is bullshit. He was given that name when he was born, it's like when Dick Grayson became Batman if he started telling everyone he was Bruce Wayne. It's completely ridiculous. Hel, most of his powers still work. All he can't do is fly and travel across the 9 worlds like he could with Mjolnir, the weapon is a tool, one that acts as an extension of him, true, but he is still Thor with or without his hammer.
I maybe would have been more inclined to like Jane Foster as Thor if it wasn't shoved down my throat, if the real Thor wasn't pushed to the wayside, and if her battle with Absorbing man didn't happen. Mostly that is an issue with Marvel having event comic leading into event comic like what DC was doing and NOBODY LIKED IT!
Also, if I may just rant a bit about "the whisper" that Fury gave to Thor (or Mjolnir, because we still have that going I guess) was that Gorr was right, Gorr, the guy who in his own story was shown to have become the very thing he hated by acting like a god but wanted to kill gods for being heartless and careless towards their people, Gorr, the guy who killed the gods of an entire planet, but didn't think to help those people who relied on them so much, you know who did help them? Thor, they prayed to him, he came and ended their drought, leading to Thor searching for their gods. Thor has seen both gods and mortals act as cruel to one another as cruel can be. Maybe when Gorr was preaching to him about how evil gods were, he should have been like "Great, so when I'm gone, who's going to help the Avengers with Galactus when he starts giving Midgard the hungry eyes, you Venom Voldemort? How about when Thanos tries to get the infinity stones? Who will help protect the 9 realms from Malekith, the Frost GIants, and who knows what, what about another planet that relies on their gods, will you help them, because if I'm gone, I sure as Hel won't be able to clean your damn messes like on Indigar, for such a smartass, you seriously didn't think this shit through".
And why didn't he just take the Ultimate Hammer, clearly if could use it to move Asgard, he can certainly lift it! And Ultimate Thor is dead, what the Hel would he care if another Thor takes it? Seriously, the 5th issue of Unworthy Thor started with Jason Aaron talking through the Unseen to say "Yeah, given the fan reaction, I probably shouldn't have made Thor unworthy". And ended with Thor going "whelp, after obsessing over this hammer for a while, I think I done all I can, back it goes, boy, I saved my home realm and countless lives over the years but boy do I suck, I'm so Unworthy!"
Ok.... I feel much better, I didn't want to explode like that but Thor Odinson is my favorite superhero, the concept of having high fantasy that borrows directly from Norse mythology crossed with modern superhero tropes has always been an interesting idea, especially since so much of superhero comics tend to lean more to science fiction. And Thor himself was always endearing to me. Jane Foster left me with a bad taste in my mouth, I just want Thor back.

Yeah, can I just say that I am so tired of the comic relief in the Thor movies, the human characters at least, and Thor Ragnarok I'm sure will be good, maybe would have been better if the focus was kept on Thor and they had the Beta Ray Bill instead of the Hulk.

Great job as usual Rob. I'm looking forward to more Thor. Unfortunately, I'm still taking issue with Nick Fury bringing down Thor. It's not because I don't like Nick, I think he's one of the most complex characters in the marvel universe and I'm not happy about what Marvel has done with him. I just don't think he was connected to Thor enough to be able to cause that much doubt. Especially since there were others that could of done it like Steve Rogers, Odin, Jane Foster, even Beta Ray Bill. Why not use Loki. As good as the saga has been, it seems flawed now. The length of time that has past may have perhaps made expectations too high. I look forward to reading Jane Foster Thor, but I don't that this final reveal is good enough for Odinson fans. Am I knit picking, 100 percent. Considering how Thor has change, they should have made it perfect.

The biggest problem I have with this series is that it is essentially just a set up for ultimate Thor or something. Another problem i have is the female Thor. Now a female thor is not a bad idea at all, its an interesting one to be honest but they fucked it up so hard to try and reach out to people who dont even read comics. Lady Sif or even Frigga would make a ton more sense of being worthy than Jane foster, I mean what the fuck did she do to be worthy? The character having a vagina wasn't enough, they just HAD to give her breast cancer too.

I think it would've been interesting if Thor sacrificed himself to save Jane Foster by giving her the power of Thor. I don't know, I like Jane Foster Thor but the way they introduced her, basically nerfing the crap out of Odinson, was really weak. I imagine that they'll eventually make Jane normal again but at least my way you would maintain Odinson's honor and you would know that Jane Foster's Thor was just a temporary thing to cure her cancer.

I'd like to follow up with a direct response to you saying "Well no answer would be good " there are better answers than the one presented, the fact is Thor should have realized long ago Gorr was right, he's fought people including other gods for hundreds/thousands of years, he's been around the Greek pantheon which is the highest example of Gorr's point. The fact it took him this much out of it makes me wonder how he hasn't been before.
No way Jason Aaron's run will be thought of as the greatest run. He has done more damage to the character of Thor than any other writer in history. He has already undone everything about Thor that writers like Walk Simonson and Michael Avon Oeming have established, even stripped him of his own name and made it a title, that's just ridiculous.

I don't like Jane Foster Thor not because she's a woman, but because her story is not good. Manuel what you said is a common tactic to shame, and discredit honest criticism. Jason Aaron generally does good work with the real Thor, but Jane Foster is just another SWJ character that's meant to push propaganda and because of everything they have done with her character, people hate he now. It's the same with Sam Wilson's Captain America. People liked Sam and Jane just fine in their respective rolls, and with Sam I actually didn't mind his Cap at the beginning. But as time went on, they have gotten worse. God Butcher and Unworthy Thor are amazing, and I freely say that those stories are some of the best Thor stories ever made. But at the end of it all when people look back on Jason Aaron's run, they will look with mostly hate. Give the man credit where it's due and shit where it's earned.

There's been several other Thor-like characters, but the only one that has managed to stick around and gain fanbase through some miracle, was Beta Ray Bill. Hell it seems quite hard to come up with wholly new characters that catch on at this point in Marvel and DC's history, but at the same time the companies want to pump some fresh blood in.
Not saying that Marvel's direction is good or bad, but the gist is that nobody is going to give a shit about other characters, especially if they are knockoffs, while the original is still around.
Well, the original is still around, and even if he wasn't... she would still be a knockoff, just as X23 is a knockoff and will never be the "real" Wolverine no matter how many times it's printed. And now, we can have *two* knockoff Thors, apparently, because why not. Bring on Black Thor, Android Thor, and Cyborg Thor. It was cool when DC did it, right? ...right?

I cant understand it, she supposedly loves Thor and yet when he goes missing she does not care. when she gets the hammer she never thinks of trying to restore Thor. She literally talks down to him when he is unworthy. She adopts an asgardian speech pattern to be more like him.
I suppose I also don’t like how Thor is handled after becoming unworthy. They made him too depressing. If they had gone to other areas of his character such as him being half elder god and what that meant for his character. They could have given him alternate powers/abilities as a result and given him a training arc where he could have returned to Asgard to defeat mangog. I feel something like this would have made Jane foster a lot better as Thor fans like me would also be really interested in odinson and her. And how they would interact idk I just don’t like Jane foster Thor atm.

I'm not a comic book reader. But, I truly appreciate this channel. My older brother is an avid reader and knows all of these stories. He always suggest I start reading them. But I never did. I always loves the cartoons and movies, just never read the books. But, now I'm a truck driver and this channel to me is like watching mini TV shows. Keep up the good work.

I see this as a different version of Thor's powers, and I see it as basically a spinoff version. Not exactly non-canon but I don't see this as "THE" way that Thor's powers function.
