I can't physically understand why this video only has a few thousand views. He deserves so much more recognition. Thank you so much bro! I'm sharing this.
He clearly does the thing he is trying to teach very well. Expert you might say. Experts are VERY often the worst kind of teacher. He also speaks very quickly. There, are you now able to "physically" able to understand.
I spent tens of thousands of dollars on formal Japanese education in college and they didn’t teach it this way and now I’m sad......haha! This makes so much more sense!!!
20 years ago when I started studying Japanese seriously, my instructor taught this method and called it “The Elevator”. Until then I was struggling with conjugations and this blew my mind at how simple it suddenly all became! I know this video is old but it only just popped up in my feed and though I use this method I had to watch! Good one!
Another thing that's made my life learning Japanese so much easier is learning Kanji radicals. People keep telling me it's useless to learn then, but I can at least memorize a new Kanji so much easier than before I learned the small amount of radicals I know that consists of the ones marked as important on Kanji alive.
Who ever is telling you it's useless definitely does not know what they are talking about. Even Japanese people learn kanji through radicals. It makes life SOOOO much easier.
This has to be the most perfect form of teaching I've ever seen! Perfect organization, perfect delivery, perfect images, perfect audio, perfect tone. Fun, easy to understand and you also gave us practice! I'm eternally thankful for this!!

I have watched so many tutorials without understanding or remembering anything about japanese conjugation, but this one and the ichidan verb conjugation made it crystal clear. I will definitely follow this channel, thank you so much!
3 years late to this but on my Japanese learning journey. Through myself in the deep end with verbs yesterday and went to bed feeling demotivated. Found this video just now and I have to agree with the other comments, your ability to teach is incredible! Thank you for this video.
Dude nice. I'm still trudging through my first 500 or so Kanji and I've been postponing learning Godan verbs because I thought it would be harder than you've made me realize. It's actually super easy and I'm going to start practicing full conjugations of every verb I learn! You've just made my Japanese learning journey significantly simpler and more fun!
Recently found your channel through twitter and this is amazing, non of my Japanese teachers mentioned this! I think somebody who had to learn a language is often better at explaining grammar, thank you for this great content. I think I will just watch all lessons to brush up on my basics which is definitely necessary
Having someone who learned the language point out things they struggled with can be very helpful! Sometimes it is difficult for natives of a language to recognize what is difficult for learners. =) I hope you find the videos helpful!
My gooosh, you helped me so much.. this is the reason why I stopped learning Japanese because no one explain it to me why the verb in Japanese is changing on different type of sentences.. now I truly understand
One of the things I like best about your approach to verb conjugation is you group the conjugations by verbs and not the other way around, which is how most other resources teach conjugation. For example, other learning resources might exclusively focus on the volitional form and give a bunch of u/ru verbs to illustrate. I find the challenge with that approach is the conjugations are essentially now compartmentalized in my brain, which is not an efficient means of recall. When trying to figure out the proper tense, I first recall the dictionary form and THEN try to conjugate it, but if I learn the conjugations in isolation, recall (for me anyway) is less efficient. In this approach, all conjugations are related to the dictionary form of the verb, making recall a bit more efficient.
Man i was confuse about godan and ichidan verb, and now i found a light, cuz sometime some word in japanese keep changing, lol u r channel deserve more sub ありがとう御座います先生
Was feeling so down about struggling with conjugation today and coming across your video changed everything and gave me hope! Thank you for your videos and explaining things so well!! :D
Wow! This is what I call an eye opener! Giving the scary verb conjugation a system like makes it so much easier for me. I love the way you teach us Japanese.
I greatly appreciate your video, you've singlehandedly made me understand how japanese works tremendously! The way other people explain was way more complicated, and you've made it in a more digestible format. Ive been studying strickly the alphabet and studying kanji, but ive never really tried to learn the conjugation because kt seemed so complicated. Thank you once again, please continue making videos!
Excellent video, which I learned a lot from and got me thinking. There were a couple more conjugations (just that I was immediately aware of) て form (飲んで) and past (飲んだ). Tokini Andy covers them both in separate videos (Genki 1 lesson 6 and Genki 1 lesson 9). There are many more verb conjugations, and if you want to make your head spin, you can search (japanese verb conjugator) in your favorite search engine.
wow...I really needed this video! wonderfully done, thank you! the simplicity and excellence of this lesson has given me the confidence and knowledge I need to further my studies and really be able to grab Japanese learning by the horns!!! have a good one! :)
The feeling I got when I realised that I knew half of the conjugations from just listening a lot to Japanese... It's so nice to be affirmed on what I knew, and to have it explained this well is amazing
Thank you!!! This has made everything so much clearer, I'm now getting back into learning Japanese again after an extended break because life got in the way, but now I've also got a native tutor who is helping me once a week too so i'm even more ready to get back into it. Also JET applications open next month and I've almost got everything I need for my application, most organised I've been in my life ahahaha. Hopefully I'll catch up on the genki lessons and be able to join in the live streams soon!
thanks homie this rules. out of everything when learning this language I struggle with verb conjugation the most, and this has made it a lot easier lol
Thank you. I paired this with a hiragana chart that only shows ru mu bu nu tsu su gu ku and u, along with the appropriate forms going up and down on the chart such as sa shi su se so for the s column. It made following along with this video a lot easier.
This was so helpful, thank you. I've heard a bunch of explanations for the basic conjugations, but watching you move the verb up and down the chart finally made it click. Definitely sharing this around!
this video has helped me overcome my anxiety in learning japanese, i thought that there's SO much to learn that I'd never reach level anywhere near N3 which i need for my future trip, thank you so SO much
Why doesn't the textbooks teach it this way, this video makes it so much easier to understand I swear some textbooks are deliberately confusing which is why is so important to have a good teacher and you sir are fantastic! ありがとうございます
Omg, this is amazing!!! I have no idea about it. Why books that teaches English don’t explain it??? It’s so much easier to understand the conjugation. THANK TOU!!!!
I have encountered a great deal of difficulty in verb conjugation. Most textbooks designed for foreign learners force us to start by learning the polite masu form of verbs. As far as I can tell, plain form is the base for verb conjugation. Without further saying, you know I fail miserably in transforming masu form to te form, ta form, volitional form and nai form. I feel like I have not learnt anything before. I have determined to start all over again. Your videos give me great hope. Thanks, Sensei.
this is exactly what i needed. I've been having trouble remembering conjugation and the way they are teaching is so confusing. on my own i realized that the ba form is just the ru moved up to re and ba added. the way i am being taught uses the pre mas form and makes it an extra unnecessary step.
Super informative. His encouragement to master this particular language skill is extremely persuasive. I know that soon I too will be conjugating the Godan verbs with ease. Thank you!
This blows my mind!!! Conjugation has always been my weak point in Japanese (ironic because I’m Polish and we have a way more complicated conjugation here lol but to be fair I had trouble learning this at school too). Like, they didn’t even teach this at my Japanese learning school and I’d say that school was very good at teaching Japanese otherwise. Now this makes so much more sense to me!
This would have been so useful when first starting out. I find the lack of a basic grammatical overview from textbooks to be really weird and disorientating. Having this as a resource to refer back to is going to be really helpful.
I've been learning with 5 different textbooks and none of them mentioned this! It literally changed my life forever, lol 😭❣️ Quick q.: are u still correcting the conjugations on the comments? Ig not since it's been 2yrs but I wanted to ask anyways lol.
Yes. I'm aware that I said, "column" instead of "row" about 50 times.
in the Netherlands we have a proverb.
even the best horse will sometimes stumble
Is the ~Te form a kind of conjugation too?
yes it is!
Lol I didn’t even notice
Knowing a language and being able to teach it are two different things. You really are a very good teacher.
I do my best! Thank you for watching this one too. =)
