    20 years ago when I started studying Japanese seriously, my instructor taught this method and called it “The Elevator”. Until then I was struggling with conjugations and this blew my mind at how simple it suddenly all became!
    I know this video is old but it only just popped up in my feed and though I use this method I had to watch!

    Another thing that's made my life learning Japanese so much easier is learning Kanji radicals. People keep telling me it's useless to learn then, but I can at least memorize a new Kanji so much easier than before I learned the small amount of radicals I know that consists of the ones marked as important on Kanji alive.

    • @ToKiniAndy
      @ToKiniAndy  3 года назад +11

      Who ever is telling you it's useless definitely does not know what they are talking about. Even Japanese people learn kanji through radicals. It makes life SOOOO much easier.

    Excellent video, which I learned a lot from and got me thinking.
    There were a couple more conjugations (just that I was immediately aware of) て form (飲んで) and past (飲んだ). Tokini Andy covers them both in separate videos (Genki 1 lesson 6 and Genki 1 lesson 9).
    There are many more verb conjugations, and if you want to make your head spin, you can search (japanese verb conjugator) in your favorite search engine.

    One of the things I like best about your approach to verb conjugation is you group the conjugations by verbs and not the other way around, which is how most other resources teach conjugation. For example, other learning resources might exclusively focus on the volitional form and give a bunch of u/ru verbs to illustrate. I find the challenge with that approach is the conjugations are essentially now compartmentalized in my brain, which is not an efficient means of recall. When trying to figure out the proper tense, I first recall the dictionary form and THEN try to conjugate it, but if I learn the conjugations in isolation, recall (for me anyway) is less efficient. In this approach, all conjugations are related to the dictionary form of the verb, making recall a bit more efficient.

    ネイティブ日本人です😊✨
    この動画は素晴らしい!
    私たちは中学生で動詞の活用を習います。
    普段日本語を話しているネイティブでさえ、習得するためには繰り返し学習が必要なパートです。
    つまりは、このパートを学ばずして文法力の向上は無いという事です。
    絶対に必要です。
    そのために、まずは動詞の基本形と未然形(否定形)から学んでください。
    そうすれば、五段活用以外の活用を学ぶ際にも大いに役立ちます。
    否定形が理解できると、活用のパターンが分かります。
    I'm a native Japanese 😊✨
    This video is amazing!
    We learn this in junior high.
    Even a native speaker who usually speaks Japanese is requires so much effort to master this.
    In other words, there is no improvement in grammar without learning this part.
    It is absolutely necessary.
    To do this, I recommend you to learn negative forms of Japanese words.
    If you do so, it will be very useful when you learn other patterns of conjugation.
    If you can understand the negative form, you can understand the pattern of conjugation of the word.

    I have encountered a great deal of difficulty in verb conjugation. Most textbooks designed for foreign learners force us to start by learning the polite masu form of verbs. As far as I can tell, plain form is the base for verb conjugation. Without further saying, you know I fail miserably in transforming masu form to te form, ta form, volitional form and nai form. I feel like I have not learnt anything before. I have determined to start all over again. Your videos give me great hope. Thanks, Sensei.

      I'm happy to hear that it helped a bit!
      I agree that starting from masu is... Questionable.
      Keep it up, and thanks for watching!

    This is very clear. Thanks! I actually learned katsuyou this way. Once you learn hiragana, this is a very easy way to understand it.

    Hi Andy 先生 any tips for quickly remembering all of the ways to conjugate the verbs and speaking them with fluency? With just 50 verbs and 9 ways to conjugate them, that is 450 words.... ありがとございます for the informative lesson!

    • @ToKiniAndy
      @ToKiniAndy  4 года назад +3

      Using this method - Godan かつよう is the way forward. I wouldn't think of them as different words, just different tenses. If you learn the 9 rules for conjugating, all you really need to learn is 9 rules, and 50 verbs and then you KNOW 450 different variations. Learn which conjugation is as which point on the hiragana chart as shown in this video, and memorize that ending, and you'll be golden. =)
      The only way to use them "fluently" though, is to get lots of practice with them. Drills, like challenging yourself to write out all of the different conjugations of random verbs, help a lot.

      @@ToKiniAndy Thanks for the advice, I've been studying for about a year and a half and still, my brain is wired in English. (Over 55 years of only speaking English....) I have heard that it is a little easier to pick up another language when we are youths....not sure how much truth there is to that... But I can see why many people quit learning Japanese, the grammar rules, exceptions and Kanji... (Just my opinion) People would like to be 'semi fluent' within a few years, and that is probably a stretch for most people.
