People hate it because it is as silent as a 3 cylinder 100 HP daily driver.
And they are right. Nobody wants this in a sports, or even more Hyper Car!
It's not that ugly... but with no sound, it's just boring. It might perform better, but it doesn't have "soul".

Personally, there are other Ferraris you can buy that are a bit more of a show piece. It’s pretty obvious this is a no-compromises road legal track car. It’s meant to be the fastest machine they can sell you. If that means it’s ugly or quiet, so be it. I might prefer to have something else but this car is obviously designed for the 799 people who want it to be impossible to get passed on a track day

Whoa. Hold up. Stop. V6 or not, at no point is putting a race engine in a road car considered "cost cutting". Race engines cost more at every stage, from development to production, not to mention the further cost of detuning the engine and selection of parts still needed to handle the engine's power while maintaining the streetability and comfort of said road car. You could say a lot of things about Ferrari and the F80 but saying they were cheaping out here is ridiculous.

It is cost cutting. The R&D is already done for the V6. It was already paid for. It is the same cost cutting VAG does. They reuse their same engine over and over again throughout different car models. It is a cost savings method.

Most Ferrari customers are not buying multi-million dollar Ferraris. Public perception is the biggest reason people buy Ferraris, it shows success in a cool and beautiful package.
If public perception gets worse and the cars are no longer cool or beautiful, no one will dream of buying a Ferrari anymore and in the long run this can and probably will ruin them.

As a life-long Ferrari fan I just gotta say they've lost their way. Their cars are getting worse and worse for the past 10 years, their interiors are absolutely awful with all the touch controls, their recent cars will forever be "from their time". Also nothing with a Ferrari badge should have less than 8 cylinders, Enzo said it 60 years ago!

    • @miks564
      @miks564 2 месяца назад +1

I'm not fond of many of the modern on steering wheel controls either, but by worse you mean sound and looks?
....try to look at the performance instead... The cars keep getting faster and more dynamically efficient.
What Enzo knew then, doesn't stand against modern technology.
A V12 sounds better but doesn't perform better than a smaller, lighter turbo charged unit. Check the Lambo Revuelto, they've opted for a naturally aspirated V12 with the hybrid system. It's an exceptionally fast car - but not as much as a SF90 with a smaller engine capacity V8 twin turbo.
...and The SF90 is definitely slower than the F80 with a V6.
I'm ok with keeping performance the top goal, specially with limited edition hiper cars.

The Ferrari F80 is essentially a Le Mans car for the road, which is why it features a Ferrari Le Mans engine. This ensures that both buyers and drivers experience the essence of a true Le Mans race car. All major motoring governing bodies now impose strict regulations on engine limits and greener race engine technology. Since the F80 serves as a halo model inspired by Ferrari’s Le Mans heritage, it naturally reflects these advancements in engineering. If you're looking for a car built exclusively for raw speed, sound, and performance without compromise, a Bugatti or Lamborghini might be a better choice. However, the F80 is a road car designed in the spirit of a Le Mans racer, blending cutting-edge performance with real-world usability. I don't like the shape personally, but people don't get it.

ZR-1 is either going to come close or exceed the F80 with what Ferrari should have done. Where the ZR-1 had a twin turbocharged 5.5 DOHC V8 the Ferrari could have done it with twin variable geometry turbos on the 6.5 V12. That configuration could easily exceed anywhere from 1400-2000 whp. None of the gimmicks and an engine configuration. The hybrid system in several years will be so archaic and all the proprietary technologies unbelievable expensive or not possible at all.
This car is beyond hideous. Go back to Pininfarina. Ferrari has became a joke. They care more about their brand than making sexy and fast cars. I have much more respect for Porsche now. The kids aren't salivating over Ferrari's anymore. They're looking at 2JZ's, S58's, Voodo, and so forth.

So instead of worrying which car is faster on track, i’d rather have the sound of an NA v12 with a gintani exhaust over a turbo v6 which is quieter than the sound of the wind passing by.

Calling it a "Cost saving measure" to put a Le Mans engine in a road car is batshit insane

  • @whatmakesittick8362
    @whatmakesittick8362 3 месяца назад +13

It sounds to me like an aftermarket exhaust would make some sexy noises. The clip of the F80 in the rain from behind, when the car gets a little loose, was excellent, just heavily muffled. This car has the turbos, multiple catalysts, and probably an active muffler that is most likely in quiet mode for these track runs. I do agree that the car has been made for aero and maximum DF, and its styling took the backseat here. But I don't believe the car will be thoroughly admonished for its looks, nor its engine. The price is in Bugatti/Koenigsegg territory, and that's the real disturbing point.
As for styling, I feel it's not only appropriate, but also will become highly considered in years to come. I have been watching the company (and I haven't liked much of the Ferrari politics and cronyism) since 1988. I was at the 1990 NY auto show at the Javits center, and since I personally knew the folks at Miller Motorcars, they gave myself and a friend VIP passes that let us (and I mean only us!!) up on the display to sit in the very first F40 American spec car. It was an honor! Since then, the F50 was ugly at first to me. But the design became so impressive when you sit and stare at the car with no preconceived feelings to ruin the experience. In the same way, the Enzo was also hideous to me on release, but I became admiring within a few months.
The F80 also hit me wrong at first. And now I can see the beauty in the design, but I have changed my feelings this time faster than the previous examples.
As for the driveline... It's not a factor of how many cylinders a car has that makes it special. Some of the rarest and most expensive Ferrari contain inline 4 cylinder engines. Bodies for these ancient Mondial models can fetch millions of dollars. On the Ferrari website, this is what they say about the car: "Powered by a 2000 cc four-cylinder engine, this model acquitted itself very honourably indeed in a whole host of races"
Then there are the Dino V6 cars. Those, even though not badged Ferrari, were indeed made in the Ferrari factory. Although the engine was a V6 and also the same engine was offered in Fiat models, the Dino V6 is known for its glorious sound. Those cars are now pretty much unobtanium. They fetch handsome sums likely to exceed the price of an incredibly posh home.
So why is everybody butt-hurt about the F80? I think too many journalists and critics just expect crazier and crazier designs, but then when a car like this OVER delivers on crazy, they rant and insult the design. These same people would also enjoy 24 cylinders and 6 turbos, and expect nothing less or else your offering isn't up to par.
Also, I haven't heard anyone complain about paying well over a million for a early 70's Carrera RS 2.7? Yes far sexier than the F80 in every way, but the F80 is the mean look. Not meant to be sexy, more of a warning to pedestrians to get out of the way RIGHT NOW. It does this brilliantly. The overall ethic of the car reminds me of the Corvette C8 bodies, as far as the mean look goes. I wouldn't normally compare the two cars, but they both look mean- not pretty. Someone who grew up appreciating the old C3 corvette body lines might indeed be repulsed by the C8. Same goes for people expecting some new F40 retro-looking new hypercar who sees the F80.
The real crux of the problem is the people who can afford these cars have driven the prices out of control based only on exclusivity and the boys club mentality of the company at large. All the high end brands are suffering this same fate of being controlled by, and fully in the pockets of, the wealthy mega-rich people who don't want YOU to have one.
The Ferrari 288 GTO was once an affordable car (still expensive, but not prohibitively so) at 78,000 at launch and 84,000 USD the end of production. They skyrocketed in value over just a few years and by 1990 were trading for 1M USD all day long. This market only lasted for a couple years, and rapidly crashed once the few buyers willing to pay up at that price were satisfied. Soon many people who just bought the cars as investments were unable to purchase the F40, for "speculation" on the markets, as Ferrari realized they missed out on selling these cars at 200,000 USD. The company punished its customers by artificially raising the prices of, and exclusivity to, its new buyers. They pushed the F40 out to 300k USD, and yet the 288 GTO was five times rarer and more special, and also had more creature comforts and time spent on it. This cemented the price inflation of all exotic cars at the top of their respective ranges. The McLaren F1 is a great example. It was the most expensive car of it's time, and now worth 20-30M USD. It has a special version of a BMW V12, but it's still based on a relatively common engine.
The F80 has a very unusual V6 at 120 degrees, almost laid flat. The 296 shares similarities and should serve as an example of the sound that may lurk under the F80s muffled stock exhaust. Time will tell. But the latest Ford GT does indeed fetch quite a bit of coin and it has a V6 "Ecoboost" engine. Should we all just say it sucks and forget that it is a modern poster car worthy of its heritage just because times have changed? At least the F80 still has a fuel burner. If it was full electric, I wouldn't even bother writing this tome. THAT would NOT be a Ferrari. It would be an appliance.

The contingency with F80 will be temporary at the moment. Since initial time of release, i can understand. Also which reminded me at a certain point i was once never into the 458 Italia or the LaFerrari initially. But as I got older i started to see the style of it and pretty much understand their incentive. Like V12 engines being more sought after, like how many car enthusiasts expect crazier designs and such. Sometimes variety of V6 or V8 can stand out for different models. I personally think the F80, is supposedly trying to stand out. Like something fresh out of an ideation from Ferrari. I’m not too hyper focused on looks but on the perceptive spectrum, I can see the direction with Ferrari. Which i can compare to other car brands as of 2024.

I said it last week when I first saw the F80 that in my opinion, it was f……g ugly. re: "you can’t have this car not AT LEAST sound like that one with way more power..." oh but you CAN have exactly that (and you will). again, it's very important we pay attention to the calendar on the wall and recognize (good or bad) that we're now DEEP into the era of EV's, Hybrids, and electrification where vehicles like the Tesla Tri-Motor Plaid, Dual-Motor Porsche Taycan, and Quad-Motor Rimac Nevera make absolutely ZERO SOUND while "crushing" everybody on Torque and HP, the existence of these vehicles goes some way at explaining WHY the F80 is now itself a "Tri-motor" electrically speaking.
that being said, something else important to recognize is how the LaFerrari, McLaren P1, Porsche 918, and Gen-2 Acura NSX are all now basically 10 year old designs (2013). these are the Gen-1 Performance Hybrids originally inspired by F1's introduction of KERS a full 3 years earlier for the 2009 season...
okay now fast-forward to the year 2024 and now we have the 7x Champs Mercedes AMG One, McLaren's W1, Lambo Revuelto, and the Bug' Tourbillion soon joining the party, but out of these 4 cars the only TRUE RIVAL to the F80 is the Mercedes (which stands to reason since the Germans are the ones to most recently break Ferrari's dominance in F1).

We live in an era of entitlement and hubris, where everyone thinks they have the right to express an "opinion", without realizing it stems from ignorance most of the times. We as a car community have put so much unfounded premium on cylinder count and out-of-car noise. When you're sitting in a car with a race grade motor, you WILL hear it loud and clear. It's quiet on the outside more than likely to meet noise regulations no matter where a potential owner wants to drive it. And frankly I think this is a concession that we as a community need to learn to accept and appreciate. It's all about the DRIVER. We focus so much on how many cylinders a car has or how loud it is when we stand next to it that we often don't even talk about how fun driving such a performance focused car can be. We as a community don't put enough emphasis on what actually matters in a performance vehicle, that being, THE PERFORMANCE. We give up on any and every car that isn't loud as shit or doesn't have a V8 or 12 unless it's actively breaking a record of some kind. And even then we hardly acknowledge it before going back to drooling over a V12 that has worse performance than some V6 motors.
We love to call ourselves car enthusiasts and then disregard a car that is built for THE DRIVER and values said driver and the performance of the vehicle above all else just because it isn't obnoxiously loud. Not everyone enjoys our hobby. We actively choose to disrespect that and then have the audacity to be surprised when regulators make it hard to enjoy this hobby freely. Whether or not a car looks good or bad is 100% personal taste. I personally really like how the F80 looks. It's clean, simple, and visibly built to be a track toy. It has a Le Mans winning power unit ffs. We're seriously complaining about a motor that has won one of the most prestigious races in the world just because it isn't loud. That's fucking ridiculous. It's made to go fast. You'll hear it when the only thing separating you from it is a sheet of carbon, some weather proofing, and MAYBE 3 feet (probably closer to 1.5-2).
It's not SUPPOSED to be loud. It's not SUPPOSED to be this flashy display. It's a rich dude's track toy. The driver and their experience is the only thing that matters with this car, and they're not hiding that AT ALL. This is a VERY in-your-face display of "fuck you, this car is about ME" and frankly, I think we more cars in this vein.
I don't like Ferrari. I think they're a dog shit company with some of the worst practices in the industry. BUT, I have a lot of respect for such the massive middle finger that this car is. They're not being cheeky or coy with this car. ESPECIALLY with the price tag of 3.1 MILLION dollars. This is a car for their most loyal customers, and nobody else. I may not like Ferrari, but I can respect the F80. And I think we all should.

It's not JUST that it's a bad design (boring, uncharacteristic, detached from Ferrari history, punch in the eyes).... It also has lazy engineering (powertrain is scalped from the SF90 stradale and mixed with the 296 ice, chassis is scalped in part from the 499P and the SP3, and they just added active 3d printed suspension on top of it) and an incredibly tame sound (sounds like a fucking city daily).
This car is... Simply... Complete bollocks. It's garbage under almost every single aspect
PS: Since I'm Italian and I've heard the "Environmental impact"... I can very simply tell you, that's complete bollocks lol. The Italian govt has lobbied against EU regulations to protect its car history and heritage (one of the very few things they did right lol) and reached an agreement that can be boiled down to "Limited run, highly exclusive vehicles, with low production numbers (aka lambo, ferrari, maserati and similar) will be exempt from EU restrictive sound and emission regulations". So no... Ferrari did it because it costed less to them to just "Lego assemble" pieces of different cars from their already up and running (and cheap) production lines... Just like McLaren did with their W1.
