  • Wien Energie GmbH is an energy company that is part of Wiener Stadtwerke. Wien Energie is Austria's largest energy supplier, sells a total of approx. 23 TWh of electrical energy, natural gas and district heating annually and was Austria's third-largest CO2 emitter in 2019.
In 1897, when Karl Lueger became mayor of Vienna, its almost 1.6 million inhabitants were supplied with 30 GWh of electricity by three private companies, which, due to the high price of 80 hellers/kWh, was used almost exclusively by the upper class of society for lighting purposes: The General Austrian Electricity Company operated a steam centre in Obere Donaustraße and Neubadgasse and distributed direct current with 4 × 110 V; the International Electricity Company generated 2000 V alternating current in the Dampfzentrale in Engerthstraße, which was converted into 110 V alternating current via transformer stations, and the 1st Wiener Elektrizitätsgesellschaft generated direct current with 2 × 110 V in the Dampfzentrale Kaunitzgasse. The gas supply - also mainly for lighting purposes - was provided by the Imperial Continental Gas Association or, in the suburbs of the time, by the Austrian Gas Lighting Company. The horse-drawn tram was operated by the Vienna Tramway Company and in some suburbs by the New Vienna Tramway Company. The population was very dissatisfied with both the gas companies (too high prices, selfish exploitation of granted rights) and the trams (too high fares, too long intervals, large parts of the city not developed). [6]
Lueger succeeded in municipalising the gas companies and by the end of November 1899 the Municipal Gasworks had taken over Vienna's gas supply in its entirety. In 1899, at Lueger's instigation, the municipality of Vienna acquired a concession for a light railway network and, together with Siemens & Halske AG, which bought the tramway company from the banker Sigmund Reitzes, founded a construction and operating company for the electrification of the tramway as well as for the expansion and operation of its lines. The municipality of Vienna had contractually reserved the right to supply the electricity for the tram from 1 January 1902. In May 1899, the municipal council decided not only to build a plant for traction current, but also an 18 MW steam power plant for the supply of light and power in order to create order in the electricity supply. On 8 April 1902, the company Kommun Wien - städtisches Elektricitätswerk, which was registered by the commercial court, supplied electricity to the Viennese trams for the first time, and on 12 May 1902, electricity for lighting purposes was supplied for the first time by the Mariahilf substation. In the competitive struggle, the municipality prevented the private electricity companies from laying new cables, which is why they pulled the cables in the cellars from one house to the next. Since they also fought each other, there were three connections in many houses with different power systems and voltages. Finally, the municipality of Vienna was able to take over the 1st Vienna Electricity Company in 1907, the International Electricity Company in 1908 and the General Austrian Electricity Company in 1914 in negotiations, thus laying the foundation for the harmonisation of Vienna's electricity supply.
