    I literally started searching for this very subject on transferring GoPro media directly to an external drive due to the amount of large file/long recording media taken during my motorcycle rides, as well as hikes. I'm still a relatively new GoPro user and haven't figured out how to edit videos on my Mac, just my phone (which is Samsung, not Apple) - and the large amounts of media are clogging up my phone. Thanks for this helpful video!

    Mate. I watched your video after wondering if i need to take my laptop overseas with me. Because i'm trying to conserve on weight. Then i got the required parts. And Holy Crap if i'm not, at this very moment, transfering files from an SD card to the hard drive "without a computer'. Mind Blown. I'm sharing this. Everyone needs to know. Thank you very much.

      I'm in the same boat Derek, don't want to have to lug my laptop through Se Asia. My question is, were you able to store 4k / 5k with out losing quality?

    Easiest method is to use a WD MyPassport Wireless. No need for any cables or adapters. Has USB and SD slot. Insert your SD card and hit the backup button. It automatically imports to the 4gb storage in dated folders.
    You can even view the media wirelessly on your phone or tablet. Plus as a bonus it can be used as a USB power bank. 😎

    fantastic video - thanks. So I just have a question - are you using the Files app on your iPhone? If so, would you have any tips on how to force the iPhone to see the connected peripherals? in Australia I was unable to get the Uni Hub and could only get a Selore so I am hoping this is not what is failing, but I simply cannot see anything that's connected.

    Hi it’s very helpful. Could you please tell me whether I can transfer directly from the GoPro to a hard drive. I didn’t quite understand why you connect the iPhone. I am sorry if I have missed something

    • @blackswanodysseys
      @blackswanodysseys  2 года назад +2

      Any file transfer, of any type, needs a micro-processor (computer) to manage and move the data. The system has to tell the data where to go, from point to point, and organize it. It names the file path so it can be retrieved. Example; a librarian shelves books by Dewey Decimal Classification. In our case from our GoPro mem-card to a hard drive a computer shelves it so we can find it and use it later. Your iphone acts as the computer managing the data transfer. Hope that makes sense.

    Thanks for your time and sharing this with us. I have a question. I am new in this, i have been transferring the videos form the Go Pro - to Go Pro App in my laptop - to an external hard drive. But when I watch the videos from the hard drive, they are horrible, bad quality, choppy and lagging. I was wondering if you have had encounter any lagging or choppy in your videos when you transfer your videos this way? Thank you for your help

    • @blackswanodysseys
      @blackswanodysseys  Год назад +1

      Raul, I haven't used the GoPro app so haven't experienced your issue. However, what I know about media apps is they reduce video sizes on purpose. They tend to do this for two reasons. First storage. GoPro expects to store your videos in thier cloud storage. 720p content requires less bandwidth and storage than 4k, making it more suitable for streaming and downloading on slower connections. Secondly GoPro expects you will share you video on social media such as Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, etc. Social media apps all use smaller format of 720p. So GoPro has no reason to save in a large format of 4k. With my system I describe in my youtube it saves videos in full format of whatever the video was recorded at- 4k 1080p.
      Let me if this helps.

    Hey man, thanks for your video. That's really helpful. Been searching the web for an age trying to figure this out. Can you tell me what the white connector to the phone is please? Can you not connect the phone directly to the Uni 6 in 1 unit? Thanks. Mike

    • @blackswanodysseys
      @blackswanodysseys  2 года назад

      The white connector is an Apple proprietary Lightning to USB. Apple iPhones sometimes have problematic connections when using non-Apple connectors. I played it safe and bought the Apple connector, plus it wasn't that much at the time. Now it's $35 on Amazon.
      I'd be curious though if off-brand Lightning to male USB would work. If you try it, post back here and let us know the results.

    @blackswanodysseys hello! I was inspired by your video and the time you take to respond to our comments. I was wondering if you have a video where you explain in detail the components needed to make this work. My husband got a gopro hero 11 and we can't seem to make that work to transfer any of the files. We were in Europe last year with the new gopro, excited to use it, took a lot of pictures and videos and when we returned we werent able to see most of them. Not sure what happened but only some pictures were in the SD card when I used my laptop to see them. It looks like most of the pictures and videos were lost. We can't even see them using the gopro itself not through the gopro app. So frustrating.
    So now I want to learn how to transfer files and make sure I don't lose any of the pictures that we will take.
    Would you please share the links or the names of the powers/cables, etc needed to make this work? Thank you very much😊

      Your lost video files- these directions should work for both a Mac or Windows-based system. Insert your micro SD card, and find your SD card on your computer. Open the files on your SD card looking for the file named "DCIM" This is where your GoPro videos will be. Once you open DCIM you should see a file name similar to "100GOPRO" Clicking on this file will reveal any videos there. Look to the end extension of ".MP4" All the other data is GoPro items that you don't necessarily need. If you don't see any of this information, your recordings are likely lost. Let me know if this helps. this is one of the main reasons I like to copy or transfer my videos off the camera SD card as soon as possible
