  • Not every knife comes with a fancy leather sheath, so here's a quick tips video with a seriously cheap DIY way to protect your woodcarving knives, chisels and gouges. Using vinyl tubing we're going to make some simple tool covers to stop the blades from getting damaged in toolboxes or cutting things up while being transported or in tool-rolls.
This week's video is brought to you by ugly sunglasses.

I keep my carving tools in a tool roll. Last week, I was removing a tool that was a little snug and when it gave way, I dragged the back of my little finger accross another tool. A trip to urgent care to have my finger stiched up and I should be carving again in a few days. I have never had a bad cut carving and just dropped my "guard"! I now have tubing covering my tools to hopefully avoid more stiches later. I was impressed on how deep and clean a cut my gouge did on my skin!🤣

Nothing like taking a moment to admire how sharp your tool was before you worried about the hospital. Lol

Brilliant! I've been thinking of a cheap and easy way to cover my blades when I carry them in my tool roll, I can't believe I didn't think of this. I even have some leftover tubing already, so it's basically free!

Never thought of this thanks! I use a cork from a wine bottle on my knives, which also works 👍

Yep cork is another good cheap solution! Getting a little harder to find them with screw tops these days

This is such a simple solution but one of those “why didn’t I think of that” moments. Thanks!

Hah! Where were you when I was trying to figure out how to wrap up my knives before tossing them in my checked luggage?! What a great and easy solution. And no worries if the tubing gets funky and cut because it's sooo cheap!

Funny enough the whole reason I was doing this was to chuck mine in my checked luggage!

You can also use cable isolation as sheaths - use a slightly longer and wider tube and heat it with a lighter. After this the isolation will shrink to its final shape and you are good to go.
I also carved a wooden sheath for my carving knife by splitting the wood and hollowing the inner side with gouges and glueing them together. This will make a very good protection fpr yout knife.

The "it's a condom for your knives" line made me giggle and got a sub from me. Great video and an easy solution I didn't think of. Eventually I'll probably make some small leather sheaths, but this is great for a quick and dirty cover.

You have to buy extra tubing so that when you set them down while you are using the knife, you can make a new one when it gets lost.

      Sorry, I'm normally good on this. Blame the U.S. These are rough, 3/8" = 9.5mm, 5/16" = 8mm, 3/16 = 5mm
