I still have Riven on CDs in the original shelf box. I remember playing it but not really getting into it like I did with Myst; I'm not sure I actually finished it back in the day. (I may have even gotten stuck at the beginning like you did.)
I think one of the great things about Myst is the majority of the puzzles weren't "hunt for the button". Instead you were given pieces of information and you had to find where to use that information.

I’m looking forward to this play though for the same reasons. I never got into Riven and forgot everything I did know (whatever that was)… hoping to see more traditional puzzles soon! Like the deciphering the numerical code!
