@@rickslifeI think people will stick with a food if the dog looks good, poops good, etc. Don't we hear it all the time? My dog does well on that food. I have to believe of the 2500 brands of dog food out there, our dogs would "do Well" on about 90 % of them. the real difference is which ones will help reduce their risk of age related disease. Dogs especially are animals of routine. I think we tend to think of them too often as we humans. and you can add good things like eggs or whatever once in a while for variety. nothing wrong with that.

10% of the meal can be toppers or whatever without disrupting the balance. It breaks my heart to truly believe there will be much more kidney disease in the future and urinary stones as well. You can't feed excess levels of protein and minerals and not expect to cause harm in pets predisposed to these conditions. Its simple math!

They have food just for seniors and a puppy formula. I have been looking for food that will be fine to feed my dogs when we go out for the day or vacations, that is what I was going to use Sundays for but not anymore. I'm new to your channel. I recently stumbled across Raised Right pet foods, and looking at their dry matter mineral content listed on their website, I was surprised to see them fall within the Small Animal Clinical Nutrition guidelines despite high protein/fat content. The weird thing is the “as-fed” numbers were higher, which are usually the other way around vs the dry matter. They also don’t use any vitamin/mineral supplements (which gets a raised eyebrow from me). I’d be curious to hear your thoughts on this one.
Well, consumers aren't asking for that and food companies know it. Feeding trails will be obsolete soon. Heck, looking at nutrients is becoming obsolete!
Hi Glenn, wow that is extremely high protein. I have a question maybe you can answer, my dog is on Science Diet Lamb and Brown Rice. He has allergies to chicken, beef and legumes but is doing well on this food. The calcium levels are at 1.09% which I understand is above optimal. His previous food was 2.00% so this the better choice but it’s higher than a lot of the other Science Diet foods. I’m wondering if lamb is just naturally higher in calcium as I can’t understand why this diet is higher calcium. He’s healthy, no kidney issues so I’ll continue to feed him this as my choices, other than prescription diet, are quite limited. Thanks!
Yes, I noticed with Hills and other brands that turkey and lamb based foods seem to deliver more calcium. That’s not a bad level though compared to most. Since it’s working I’d stick with it.

if it was a Science Diet with wheat, that could have been the problem. Wheat is still one of the highest allergens. Just don't add a topper more than 10% of the meal. One, it adds expense, 2 it starts to throw off the balance of the nutrients.
Happy Feline Friday! Sunday's Ca and P levels are for puppies. The protein level is excessive, even for puppies. Regarding "all life stages." According to SACN guidelines, a dog food that had protein: 22 - 30%, calcium: 0.7 - 1.0% and phosphorus: 0.6 - 0.8%, etc. would technically be fine for both puppies and adult dogs. I realize that a commercial pet food company meeting those narrow ranges would probably be prohibitively expensive. Still, never say never!
You explained this very thoroughly. I feel the debate comes down to the vitamins added to a dog food, which we can control the amounts of the vitamins added vs. the more natural, whole foods that would supply the vitamins required. We cannot control the specific amounts of vitamins in a whole food item. For example an apple from one part of the country might have x amount of vitamins vs an apple from another state or even variety would have a different amount. Correct me if I’m wrong. I understand a lot of people would rather have that whole food vs just an added vitamin. I get that and it is a very attractive preference. I too would rather feed the whole food. You make a very valid argument for the fortified foods. I feel there should be a middle ground somewhere where we can have the best of both worlds. Those dog foods might be out there but they are few and far between. I don’t mind feeding Science Diet, I feel they do a better job than Purina. Purina has so many ingredients in it that I don’t like and I just cannot justify the purchase of it. The one thing I personally don’t like about fortified foods is you can fortify a food like a Twinkie, but it’s still a Twinkie. I’m looking for better quality ingredients AND balanced nutrition. Does it exist?
I love Twinkies! I let myself have one packet per month! Yeah, funny that fortifying junk food is supposed to make it less junk! I think the difference in thinking of whole ingredients vs supplements is nature vs science. We observe nature and learn all about nutrients, bioavailability, digestibility, but its science that allows us to use nutrition to lengthen lives and mange disease. Nature stops at some point where science takes over. Like I always say, there's no geriatrics in nature. Nature is actually pretty cruel.
Thank you so much for your videos! I have learned so much from you and from Animal Doc Rae and I have switched my dog back to the Purina Proplan. I just got my bag of Science Diet today and am wanting to try and transition him to that, but I have always thought he was sensitive to chicken, so this will be a trial transition. I have come to realize through your videos and through my experience with an all life stage food, Earthborn Holistic Unrefined Smoked Salmon, that that was a food that was too rich for him. He was constantly burping and every two weeks he was vomiting white or yellow bile. So, he was experiencing some indigestion or acid reflux. When I started researching foods, again, I found both yours and Animaldocrae’s channels and everything clicked. I had fallen into the marketing trap and the big box name kibbles are bad and vets don’t know anything about nutrition, they are just being paid. I now know better. Thank you both…. Anyway, my question, I really want Science Diet to be his new food. The one I purchased is the Large Breed Adult Healthy Mobility Chicken Meal, Brown Rice and Barley. He was diagnosed early with hip dysplasia and he is on a glucosamine supplement I get from his vet, anyway, this food says it is formulated to meet the requirements for an adult dog but it is not tested through animal feeding tests. Can you tell me why this one says that while other formulations says they use feeding tests? I am wondering if it is a similar formulation to another one that has been tested through feeding trials. I am sorry I was so lengthy, but wanted you to know my why I switched and to thank you so much for all your videos!

If a diet is just a variation of another diet, in the same family as they call it, they generally won't do a feeding trial. Another option if you're not satisfied over time is Prescription Diet JD. it the next step up. I just put one dog on it and she is off any meds and doing great. I give her Cosequin too. Glad you found me and Dr Rea! I feel like were two Davids up against the Social Media Goliath!
I understand that. There is so much out there About dog food and companies and what is best and what is bad. I appreciate you both educating us… If he does well the chicken, I may go with j/d diet. He will be 7 in November and he has his yearly physical in April. I will definitely talk to his vet about it. It is probably time to have him xrayed again as well. Like you, I also have his blood work done, and even though he has been on an all life stages food, his labs have been great. I was checking their mineral levels and calcium and phosphorus wasn’t much higher than what is recommended but the fiber was way too excessive at 9.5%. I thought that was good for his stools but the purina proplan is much lower and his stools are the same. So glad that science diet food is proven. I tried four boxes of Sunday’s, two of the chicken and two of the beef and my dog would not eat it unless I just did not give her anything else and she was forced to eat it and then she seemed to not feel good after so I canceled my subscription…. after seeing this review I’m glad I did 😊🥰🐾
Well I'll never judge a food by its taste but in this case it was a benefit. I have two little dogs who are much more picky than all the big dogs I've had over the years.

Cowboy, foods with higher fat, meaning higher calories, will allow you to feed less. I don’t see how air dried would be any different than dry extruded.

Lu John, I would think any brand name dry would be fine for temporary travel. Perhaps not too high in fat if you’re switching quickly.

Prescription Diet Canine KD Kidney Care canned is the very best. Dry would be next best.

I’ve used Sundays and my dogs love it but I’ve started just using Sundays as a topper to kibble. Hills was causing itching with my mini schnauzers.

I have a 20 pound dog should I feel small breed kibble or regular
Not a big deal. The small breed might be a bit higher in calories so if a more active dog, or if she likes tiny kibble, go that way.

Sundays is an expensive option with poor customer service and an even poorer website to manage your sub with.

I do not understand the whole air dried food you are suppose to feed dogs less amount. That seems like a tease like your dog would never be full.
