How to streamer fish with a floating line

- In this video, I am out sea trout fishing on Gotland in late December. Both air and water temperature is high for the season and the fish is feeding. I received many questions about my strategy of fishing a floating line instead of slow intermediate. Why I use it in so many videos and I feel it is time I explain.
The biggest mistake I see when people streamer fish with a floating line is that they don't take advantage of the possibility to control the depth of the fly/flies. To keep the flies in the strike zone for most of the retrieve is so critical. When like here fishing in quite cold water I can very effectively do that by allowing the flies to sink before retrieving. In warmer temperatures closer to the summer I just use a heavy jiggy fly or change to an intermediate line if that helps me to more effectively cover what seems to be the most likely strike zone.

Standing in one place and waiting may not always give you what you expect. Sometimes you need to change the location, especially after the shot (also if there was only this one catch) and when you made too much noise (handling line; steps etc). Its like hunting animals....U need to keep down everything...supersmooth footsteps also a voicescreen... Maybe we have a different way here on the northen coast of Estonia, but in general this is how it tends to be...

How big is the size of your tippet-ring, and what brand is it. I have a problem with mine, because they seems to cut the leader, when I draw the knot hard. What line thickness, do you have, where you tie your tippet-ring and continue in 0,28 and the fly.
You should try the Jack Miller knot to tie your flys on the tippet….one of the easiest strongest knots ever!

Hey Robert - Great Video - Quistion: When you use a 15-16ft leader in total you can have a problem when fx. landing a fish. You need to pull the knot between leader and flyline through the top eye of the rod. Have do you handle that problem and knot resistance? Thank You for all your excellent videos :-)
Hi. Thank you. In the fly line loop I tie the tapered leader with a simple clinch knot. This means that if there is a premade loop on the tapered leader, I'm cutting it off. It works very well actually.

That's the ones. They do fluff up a bit more when used.

The less physical handling of trout and fish in general is the better way to ensure survival of released fish as less likely to remove protective slime that protects them!

Thank you. I have never fished for striped bass but if you retrieve very fast or fish deeper ledges or from the boat it might be better with a line that sinks a bit.

How long should your leader and tippet be when fishing intermediate line?
Usually a bit shorter 12-14 feet in total

When is best to fish for coastal sea trout. High tide? Low tide? Or does it not matter so much
There are no tidal change where I fish. Of course it matters a lot in places there is tide.

I can read in the description that you are using an 8wt XO line for a 7wt rod. And as i recall the XO line is already quite heavy when holding the 16meter head in the air. Is there any reason why sizing up one line weight even thou the line could be seen as an already heavy line, possible to load rod earlier and shoot further with less line outside the guides? I am in search for a new line for my Sage Igniter and this line cought my attention.
Hi. The XO line doesent exacly follow the AFTM system. The weight of the 7wt head is 17g and that is the whole head. I found that to be much better in wind and with two big flies on the leader to have the 8wt line instead. It was first Bauer who recommended me to try that and it is perfect for me. Other lines I don't choose 8wt on.
With other words, the XO 8wt is more a true AFTM 7wt (9,14 m≈17g)
