  • Gathering bilberries on Cannock chase with a french 'bilberry comb'. Bilberries are the European blueberry. In June, small pink bell-shaped flowers appear and by August, the small bushes are covered in blue berries, which can be harvested to make jams and pies. They have a number of different names across geographical regions: blaeberry in Scotland, whortleberry, wimberry, whinberry and urts in other parts of the UK. Bilberries have a long use as a medicinal plant being used to treat diabetes and stomach issues. Their action is due to the antioxidants helping to reduce inflammation in the body.

I saw no bilberres in Snowdonia this year. It was strange and I wondered if they'd already been eaten by birds or if it was some kind of mass pollination failure.
