+Ghost Child Yes. Anywhere people settle down, there will be dome disease. That said, you have to define "colonize" to understand the risk and scale of disease possible. If everyone is in space suits and eating climate controlled food, the risk of disease is very low, but if you are talking full planetary teraforming, the sky is the limit for disease. Add in the risk of exposure to foreign bacteria we have no exposure to and it would be a major concern.

Not only that, but something far more worrying - viruses and bacteria evolve as a response to the environment they are living in. Currently the only difference between middle of the desert and Antarctica is temperature fluctuation. With colonizing other planets, these microbes will be presented with so much more: different temperature, radiation level, gravitational force, atmospheric pressure, chemical composition of the atmosphere... And viruses and bacteria will change because of these things in a way we can't predict.

Were you born before 2009? If you were then you already lived through one. The H1N1 (or swine flu) was a pandemic in 2009-2010 that originated in Mexico that ended up infecting an estimated 1.1 billion people worldwide by the end of its course.

The COVID global disaster showed us again and again that if the right people are not in power, the pandemic will spiral out of control and cause even more damage and havoc. Especially if those politicians lie endlessly, cause confusion on purpose, and demonize and scapegoat the science and scientists for their political benefit...

This is reminding us that we did everything wrong, we didn’t avoid a pandemic and a lot more people have died because of COVID-19 than they died of SARS, and this isn’t even finished yet
COVID19 is more contagious and is capable of transmitting while asymptomatic, SARS in general is only contagious when patient had fever, while Ebola in general is only contagious when patient is so sickly they were incapable of even sitting upright.

COVID-19 has gotten out and has probably already infected 1 million people around the world. (347,000 is the worldwide official count as of March 22, but tests are not being given out widely to see the true extent of infections.) This is leagues more people than SARS or Ebola. And this is exponential growth EVERY FEW DAYS! So a few days from now I expect 2 million people to be infected, and a few days later 4 million, and a few days after that 8 million. This is not going to end well...

It's still bittersweet in September 2021! So many dead and dying, so many with Long Covid, so many in hospital. And we're still not living "normal" lives, still restrictions on contacts & activities. Even though we've got a vaccine, and lots of people vaccinated.
OMG, the 1918 pandemic is the stuff of nightmares. 50 million people dead, out of 1.8 billion people living in the whole world in 1919. That's nearly 3% of the world's population. In 2016 terms, with the world population being 7.3 billion, 3% would equal a total of 220 million people! Wow, crazy scary! Hopefully I will never experience such horror in my lifetime...

@@bcunningham3718 Its tough to prepare for the next epidemic when you don't know what the causative agent is gonna be. Worse, when it's not a human infecting virus initially. All you can do is keep the research up and TRY and take common, basic precautions. Which is what many aren't doing today and it's getting out of hand
I must say the first time I watched this video was in my biology class and I got chills from it. I've watched it at least 3x since. I really love the animation, music, and how smooth and unexpected the transitions are. I don't think I got that much insight from it other than how quickly diseases spread but this is a truly powerful video and when the word pandemic became panic, I was p shook

WHO called it a pandemic in March though. So science and media gave us an opportunity to detect the pandemic even before it became a pandemic😁

They identified the virus in late December, but they suspect it started in November.
bnkjkdsbklafj hjbvjhbfdasjka what I meant is science gave us all precautions about the upcoming threats, and without science we would indeed be troubled not knowing what is happening around. It was us, our governments that failed to react and take things seriously.
My biology professor showed this to our class at this exact same time last year. I remember thinking that it was frightening… But that something like this would probably never happen in my lifetime. A year later I’m eating my words. I had to come back and watch it again. This is really haunting me right now. I really wanna email my professor... :(

The problem is covid-19 spreads even when the patient is asymptomatic. that means the person doesn't even know they have it. Add to that countries closing borders which caused a lot of people travelling to their country of origin (think people on work permits, students etc.) the lack of action from governments when in january, february, as late as first week of march led to this situation.

CoVid -19 already been a pandemic. And here in Philippines we panic buy everything, no alcohol in stores, no masks, no work mostly in Luzon. As of now Luzon is on community quarantine, visayas and mindanao didn't announced its quarantine status yet, but thanks to local government, they're making their part but having medical checkpoints, but I know there is asymptomatic people there spreading disease and Visayas and Mindanao are very vulnerable right now because no total lockdown as of now. march 16, 2020. I hope no one get serious spread here in Philippines. And hopefully people don't critisize and made false news, giving connection to politics to every move the government made. Government knows how to handle this so lets trust our government. And I hope people will follow the government as to stay at home and be hygienic. Correct me if I'm wrong. I'm from visayas Bohol. I have no work because I work on tourism sector. No tourist, no work. Hopefully this f***ing virus will fade away by itself nor find a cure as soon as possible. 😌
