Looks amazing to begin with. :) ***I just got a mk 7.5 GTE Advance thanks to your convincing videos. Thank you. Video coming soon on my main channel. :)
Great video I agree in all your thoughts of the golf r !! Great car though. I have had 2 7rs down the track will be going back to gti 40 years edition in Australia
Great review! Ive owned my mk8 R for 8months now. I agree with the chassis being a step up on the golf 7.5 Having driven both you can really feel it. The mk8 platform for me handles lot nicer less boat like. 👍 keep up the good work.
Agreed, makes more sense with a secondhand R and going by the latter part of 2022 we should see some significant price drops in 2023 and I'll be right there when we do :)
Really enjoyed that, Andrew. You make a really strong case for buying one that's nearly out of warranty and then fitting the Racing Line bits. Looks really exciting but enjoyable to drive. That engine noise is addictive. Love those wheels, halfway to buying a set now for my car in the grey finish. Happy Christmas to you and yours. Looking forwards to your next video. It it's the car on your Insta post that I've seen today I'm really looking forwards to it. Brought back many happy memories of my Tornado Red one.
Glad you enjoyed it Rory! The R360 wheel set is a very well jusdged product as they fit all the main VWG cars and it's hard to dislike the heavily Lambo inspired design and all for the price of 1 replacement wheel from VW. Just looking at the footage from today's collection of the Mk2 you saw on Insta, I think it will make an OK introductory video for just after Christmas. Lots of history with that car as I sold it to the guy I bought it off 18 years ago and he was also the previous owner of my Corrado. He's actually buying another Corrado in January so hope to get that on the channel too. Hope you have fun reminiscing like I have:)
Racingline put a Stage 1 tune on my Tiguan Allspace 245 2.0Tsi, and it now chucks out more power and torque than the standard R. (335PS & 500Nm) Top top blokes there too at the Milton Keynes HQ, esp Ben.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it and yes, can't help thinking about the R400 that was killed at birth, this is like a second gen R400 with a clever rear diff. Festive greetings to you and yours 🎅
Hi mate, thanks for the reply hope you had a great xmas. I recently moved away from my stage 1 golf gti7.5 to a vw t6 transporter. You could maybe do a few videos on this scene as it will give you a bigger audience 👍🏻 have a great new year
Great review Andrew. I know Ben and the lads at Racingline have worked so hard to get the mapping right on this car, and it seems a really lovely power delivery. Which translates to an effortless power, only enhancing this engines already healthy torque curve. You are so right when you say the R is the perfect all season weapon for this country, I have always favoured the GTI/Clubsport editions in the past, but with the Racingline package on the mk8 R, you honestly can now have your cake and eat it too. Have a wonderful xmas Andrew, thanks for all the content the past year, and l look forward to new content in 2023.
Thanks Audidoit, hope you had a good day and all the best for 2023. You have confirmed what I thought, that this software is very important to Racingline and they’ve pulled out all the stops to give people what they want. I forgot to mention that the map also enables left foot braking which hasn’t been possible since Mk3! I can’t think of a map that has transformed a car so much 👌
Superb video review. Racingline seem to have worked their magic on a good car to make it great and more fun - turned it up to 11. I think the suspension drop is spot on and the alloys (which I really like) suite the 8R well. Launch looks a fun experience to wake you up 😂. Merry Christmas Andrew and to all of your followers here and to the new ones just joining.
Glad you enjoyed it Darren! It's an impressive package but that doesn't take anything way from your 7.5 GTI Performance which delivers all it promises. It's just the R promises so much and doesn't really deliver in stock format. Hope you have a very merry Christmas and see you again in 2023 🎅👍
@@volkswizard I too have always preferred the GTi, because of the tartan interior and red touches and the chassis playful with the rear end not being driven. Perhaps VW have designed the R for the aftermarket scene?? All the best.
I have been impressed by the RL products bought over the year and now fitted to my own Mk8 GTI. As it will be 3 years old in Nov23, the upgrade looks tempting. Sticking with 18" rims but changing stock to a set of BBS. Merry Christmas to you and all Volkswizard subs.
Anyone noticed the apparent misalignment of bonnet and fender near the headlight at 1:34? Is this some kind of optical illusion? I have noticed it on several of the new Golf 8s and as a Golf 7 owner I cannot say I like this quirk
Morning Andrew. Following on from a previous RUclips mention by you of Racingline I made contact with them and they remapped my partners stock Golf mk 7 1.4 TSI DSG. Has vastly improved the horrendous flat spot when pulling away. Now drives like a normal car. They were very friendly and helpful. I did tell them it was off the back of your comment so hope that helps you! Best wishes to you and yours for Christmas and the New Year. 50k subs by the NY?
Hello Howard, festive greetings to to you too🎄 Great to hear feedback on Racingline. A Mk7 is a pretty old car now and I am sure the newer cars have even worse response all due to the emissions regulations. So remapping to sort this out rather than have more power is going to be big business. 50k by New Year? New Year 2024?! It's hard to gain more than 1k per month so somewhere around high summer is the ETA, better time for a party anyway :)
A merry Xmas to you and the good Mrs C, Andrew. My usual insomnia down here in the antipodes. Picked phone up and went into RUclips to find this video just up by a matter of minutes. Great job indeed by the RL team. See you in 2023. 👍
Thanks David, a peaceful Christmas would be nice, hope you have one too if you want one! Yes engine cover is elephant in the room right now. Maybe Santa will bring a carbon upgrade from VW for Golf 8 owners ? 🎅
I suppose it could be unless you want something lower and flasher like a Porsche. When they sort the UI out Golf 8 (8.5) will be a force to be reckoned with.
Thanks, you too Dave 🎅 How are things with you? Still with the best looking lorry driver in the UK? Didn't you buy a really nice car recently? I don't think you sold that stunning 8P RS3 though did you?
@@volkswizard all good thank you. Yes I am, we are due to get married October 2023 :) We bought a Q4 ETron in February, just over 10.000 miles in and no major issues yet. Thanks Gary, yes I normally don't like white Rs but I think it's the wheels more than the decals that make it work. White is always good for hot Golf but needs some black contrast.
Depends on the mod, if it's engine related then VW will use mods to wriggle out of claims even if there is no hard evidence it's related and standard cars are failing just as often.
@@volkswizard Thanks mate 👍 Agreed 100% I'll get the stage 1 tune when it's released with the carbon fibre R600 intake and catback exhaust 🙂 I'll also be interested in a stage 2 and stage 3 tune in the future 😉
What are your thoughts of remapping a Tiguan R? Would the respond to the remapped high torque engine and gearbox give it a better feel. The Tiguan R is fitted with the R600 intake, front chassis raceline aluminium strengthen. Maxton 3 front splitter, rear wing add on and the rear defuser all from Maxton Design.
I can't see why not Alan, it will certainly feel faster. I'm pretty sure you don't have the rear diff of the Golf, it's the traditional Haldex system but handling is good for a high riding SUV so it shouldn't feel to out of its depth. These maps are all about the torque and that's very much in keeping with what you want from an SUV so go for it.
Also some more info on the the Racingline and their OEM+ tuning. They currently have remote tuning in the beta testing stage. Some really cool things coming from an awesome company!
Another great review. i manage to pick up a new MK8R in aug after a 9 month wait. Still very rare in Bc Canada. Its now park for the winter. Actualy getting lots of snow this year. Trying very hard to not ECU tune it for a while but not sure how long i can hold out for. lol.
Thanks Alex! Golf 8 R is quite rare here in the UK too, it's an event to see one. It might take you a while to get bored of it's standard performance but if you do you know what to do 👊
Merry Christmas Andrew, i have the latest 22 plate T-Roc r 300, it rides pretty good on 18" with passive dampers, i think it runs the same engine as mk8r? ableit less power, so this Tune should work on my car? Thanks Michael.....
Merry Christmas to you too Michael. I've not driven one on passive dampers and 18s so your feedback is appreciated. I doubt they'd use the old R engine in your car so yes I think it's a Gen 4 and would be compatible - they quote 300/310/320 engines. If you've got the engine cover that was part of the recall then it's definitely Gen 4 - must be another way of telling but can't think of one now.
I was just thinking some other RUclips channels do videos on 600 bhp Golf Rs so no, this one is perfectly docile. The launch via launch control was still really fast and effective, it's just that one tyre was on dry ground and the other was on a damp patch. The car shifted a few degrees one way as one rear tyre spun up momentarily (you can see me apply a touch of opposite lock), in a lot of cars when the second gear is slammed home the car can start to rotate even more which isn't good but DSG being so smooth it didn't affect it and by second gear it was in its stride. Also in comfort mode and auto gear shifting it's only running a 250nm map, it's good to have the choice. I think a front wheel drive GTI would struggle with this map but that's what the lower torque software if for. Still a lot for the front tyres to contend with but we shall see how they cope as got a Mk8 CS with this map lined up for slightly better conditions in 2023.
Thanks Kevin. Not sure what you are referring to as Racingline themselves don't work on cars so it must be a dealer of theirs. As I've said before, every firm has a bad day every so often, I don't know the history so can't comment
@@volkswizard i hear what you're saying but they had the car back in there hands 3x including the first time and then i found out that they had taken my car to a other company to use a rolling road And when i got the car back it was still bad and under performing by a lot!! Plus the customer service was bad in my experience when i was questing them when the othee company called them. The power was under and if wasn't changing gear and nearly blow up my engine..
@@volkswizard if they would reply on here i would go in deeper I'm just keeping it as small as i can (but i know that would never happen) and i would bring in other cars to or get them to come on here. (But as for your channel keep the good work up 👍
@@volkswizard had one. Reverted back to mk 7.5. I’ve also got a stage 1 gti 2016 with a few tasteful upgrades. Around town, it’s more enjoyable than both ha. Cheers, have a great festive period.
@volkswizard this video has made me want to modify my GTI Clubsport when it's 3 years old. Probably not any power upgrades, but some racingline braking and chassis upgrades would really make it even more fantastic to drive!
Interesting to watch is good enough, can't make everyone want a tuned Golf R though weirdly I really want one now. Got to be black though which is annoying as white and blue and a bit too in yer face. You know a good detailer don't you 🙄
@@volkswizard 100% agree black would be the only colour. definitely looks passable with ££ mods. think you would need to drive it flat out in summer to check that it's not the usual R boring we both detest. 👍
I'd replace my sleeper Mk6_Golf-R 2+ with a sleeper mk8 Golf-R + plus the ecu and tcu flash and save a bundle in difference between it and the new RS3. Stealth has its rewards. Love this review.
A black R would be pretty stealthy. Need to drive back to back but can't imagine any car with that 2.5 5 cylinder engine being anything like as neutral, 8R is pretty neutral without rear diff intervention while I am pretty sure RS3 needs that torque splitter a lot more, basic physics. However love RS3 too and great to have the choice 👍
VW have ruined the reputation of the manual gearbox with the useless clutches they put in the first gen MQB EA888 cars so it's a sore point. The R 20 Years' DSG manual mode is pretty good but will never be as engaging as manual, however nor will it need a new clutch at well under 10k miles
Good question. Well there are racingline agents in Aus so that’s a good start, don’t recall any restrictions for down under but best to contact your local agent, racingline.com has a dealer finder on there👍
@@lindsay9697 all good. Love it makes the world of difference particularly down low but noticeable throughout whole range especially when in race or Nurburgring modes.
@@davidbradley440 that’s so good to hear and even better that your enjoying it. did you go the high/low file tune and did you do tcu? Any other mods? Considering this route also and in Aus
I don't think racingline would care how I drove it but it's more to stay within the speed limit and not get told off for 'dangerous' driving. The launch control bit was the full rev range in 2 gears but it's definitely more exciting in the higher gears (so I am told). I did some 3rd gear 40 to 70 mph runs in the R20 video, it's ballistic! Need to get on track for the full experience, hopefully in 2023 and I promise I'll make it sing 👍
That’s easy and it’s not just me, common theme across all of the motoring media. Fun from driving comes from a degree of excitement and that’s had more easily (basically at relatively sane speeds) in cars with less grip. It’s also a more interactive car which rewards skill, for example you can’t just hoof the throttle but matching available grip to throttle is a real buzz. I could go on…
I don’t think Racingline will ever be the cheapest because they do a lot of R&D and quality is high. The market sets the prices ultimately, if they didn’t sell they’d be cheaper
Where do you get your stats from? VW haven't had supply of these cars so the real test will be 2023. They have just started advertising stock available in the UK and that's only the lowly life model. There is a massive backlog of factory orders that haven't been fulfilled yet, some of which are over a year old. Let's see what 2023 brings, you may be right but you can't base that on what 2021 / 2022
I love the MK8 Golf R videos, but WTF is going on with VW supply of new vehicles? I’ve had a Golf R on order for 9 months, I rang VW recently for an update and was simply told “global chip shortage, no idea when, call back next year”. It’s probably at least another 12 months away if not longer. Last month my wife decided she wanted a brand new BMW 220d MSport Coupe. We walked into our local BMW dealer, she told them what she wanted (with options included as well) and collected it 10 days later. If only……..
Another great video of one of the favourite cars. Thanks to this channel I have a few Racingline parts on my mk8 (although 1.5 eTSI R-Line so choice is slightly limited) @Racingline @awesomecars1
I like the 1.5 eTSI, first one I drove was a Style model. 2 years ago I drove Goodyear's 1.5 TSI R-Line and I thought that was the sweet spot in the range, still hard to distinguish from an R when I see them on the road from certain angles. Just wish they did a petrol engine between the 150 and the 245 GTI
@@volkswizard I know what you mean. Something around 180-190 (maybe R-Line only? - I suppose if I keep mine after the warranty runs out I could get it mapped to somewhere near that?) Would be nice if we would eventually get the 1.5 in a Polo like they do in Europe too. hoping we get the Jetta GLI (or equivalent) in the UK too as we really like that (may eventually replace the A3 with one of it does) @Volkswagen @Racingline

I think a front wheel drive GTI would struggle with this map but that's what the lower torque software if for. Still a lot for the front tyres to contend with but we shall see how they cope as got a Mk8 CS with this map lined up for slightly better conditions in 2023.
Good video but it's a shame i don't trust them to work on my mk8 when i get
Thanks Kevin.
(But as for your channel keep the good work up 👍
Gud vid 😍
Thanks mcj👊
Have a Great Christmas too :)
Thanks, you too!🎄
Defo keeping my stock 3 dr mk 7.5. Dsg, leather panoramic roof. Perfect time in R history.
It's a good car and better than Mk8 in some ways, but if you really like to drive, there is a lot more to enjoy with a Mk8.
@@volkswizard had one. Reverted back to mk 7.5. I’ve also got a stage 1 gti 2016 with a few tasteful upgrades. Around town, it’s more enjoyable than both ha. Cheers, have a great festive period.
That thing looks a lot of fun.
I think it's safe to say it is 😁
@volkswizard this video has made me want to modify my GTI Clubsport when it's 3 years old. Probably not any power upgrades, but some racingline braking and chassis upgrades would really make it even more fantastic to drive!
Just put RS7 disc and calipers on the rear
great video review thank you. Racing Line mods make it look passable.. especially the wheels. Not a car for me but interesting to watch 👍
Annoying I don't live in MK anymore. Might have to pop back down to get my golf sorted too
Brilliant. Can't wait for my warranty to expire next December.
Make sure you get it in for a service just before so they can give it a checkover and then maintain it to spec (or better) and enjoy :)
turned out great just like mine 😁😍
Great job!
Merry Christmas 🎅
Thanks Simon, hope you had a good day, best wishes for 2023🎉
Merry Christmas
Thanks James, hope you and yours have a good one 🎄🤶
God the engine noise sounds so terrible inside the cabin
hi Andrew, it came new with no engine cover, engine number on V5 DNFC. Does this help?
A pheasant… or a peasant?
Either/or😁
I'd replace my sleeper Mk6_Golf-R 2+ with a sleeper mk8 Golf-R + plus the ecu and tcu flash and save a bundle in difference between it and the new RS3.
No matter how good auto box's get ill always prefer the feel and sound of manual shifts
Is the redline map available in Australia? 🤞
Good question. Well there are racingline agents in Aus so that’s a good start, don’t recall any restrictions for down under but best to contact your local agent, racingline.com has a dealer finder on there👍
@@volkswizardyes is it available in Australia. I’ve got my mk8 r booked end of February to be done.
Keep rewatching this video teasing myself lol.
@@davidbradley440hey matey, sorry for a late dig up of an old post.
But have you got any feedback from the tune?
@@lindsay9697 all good. Love it makes the world of difference particularly down low but noticeable throughout whole range especially when in race or Nurburgring modes.
@@davidbradley440 that’s so good to hear and even better that your enjoying it.
did you go the high/low file tune and did you do tcu? Any other mods?
Considering this route also and in Aus
btw I had to watch the launch twice as the first time I thought that noise was a warning alert from the car hahhaha 😂 it's been a long day....😮
Guys, song name pls?

Hi mom
hi son
Great video + much to think about 👍
Let her sing champ! Those shorts shifts are killing me 😂 it’s not yours so I get it, I’m just a petrolhead
You made the statement that you think that golf r's, in general, are not as fun as GTI's. I would like to know why?
That’s easy and it’s not just me, common theme across all of the motoring media. Fun from driving comes from a degree of excitement and that’s had more easily (basically at relatively sane speeds) in cars with less grip. It’s also a more interactive car which rewards skill, for example you can’t just hoof the throttle but matching available grip to throttle is a real buzz. I could go on…
Quote; "This is boring compared to my Clubsport"....🤣 In 1 sentence, how to disrespect all the upgrades this monster has just had.
I was referring to the standard mk8 R
Nice parts. Way overpriced.
I don’t think Racingline will ever be the cheapest because they do a lot of R&D and quality is high. The market sets the prices ultimately, if they didn’t sell they’d be cheaper
Golf 8 is a flop in europe. They dont sell..... Why not? They are way too expensive.
Why are there plenty on the roads given the short supply of all cars then?
@@OtterlyInsane there arent plenty on the road.
It’s $10k over msrp in California. $55k
Where do you get your stats from? VW haven't had supply of these cars so the real test will be 2023. They have just started advertising stock available in the UK and that's only the lowly life model. There is a massive backlog of factory orders that haven't been fulfilled yet, some of which are over a year old. Let's see what 2023 brings, you may be right but you can't base that on what 2021 / 2022
@@Whitect4v its almost 70k€ in austria. for comparison: a yaris gr costs ~45k
80 likes!!! nice 1 re the car and lol in MK again!!!
And it still doesn’t sound as good as the R32.
Noise isn’t everything, it’s a nice bonus but shouldn’t be priority
@@volkswizard It is when you’re 26 and have no kids. 😄
If only……..
ship shortage is over now, this is VW BS
I just hope the mk8.5 will have a better looking front end and interior quality. But its soooo ugly🤢
