    I was a rock guitarist. At 6 in the morning after a party my friend said "Just listen to this." I said, "Not more classical." He said, "No, just imagine you're playing this on the guitar." I just sat there with my mouth open. I've never been the same since. Thank you, Brahms, for opening the door.

    Great performance by Hahn and great conducting by Putin.
    edit: In all seriousness though, I think that Hilary Hahn interprets Brahms the best. Beyond her phenomenal technical skill to master this tough concerto, she plays with a natural "heaviness" in her bow and vibrato that perfectly suits the richness of Brahms.

    • @TiqueO6
      @TiqueO6 8 лет назад +33

      Yes! Hillary is often not shy about leading the music, the orchestra, in tempo or feeling to where she feels it should be going. I wonder if she has an agreement with the conductor ahead of time about these kind of things, I have a feeling that she does and that the conductor has a responsibility to know the tendencies of the soloists. Her sense of interplay with the orchestra is so excellent and rare to see that I hope that people are noticing that as well because it is a true collaboration and sharing of inspiration in the moment that we are witnessing in the moment.
      The first time I saw her perform there were two things that stood out that don't always show on videos, that she moves her body with the music from the feet up is if she is slightly dancing, also that she turns and listens to different sections of the orchestra intently when she is not playing shows that she is also listening that intently when she is playing and that you can see and hear that connection very vividly is also apparent.

    • @schm4704
      @schm4704 4 года назад +4

      @@TiqueO6 I agree about the moving, or "dancing"- to me it seems that in the more intense passages, she gets her tone almost out of her legs, like a javelin thrower or something of that nature. I don't play the violin, but it sure looks lime a full-body exercise.

I don't have a strong favorite for the Brahms concerto (among the old masters that would be David Oistrakh). I listened to fragments of HH's performance and it is without a doubt one of the absolute top executions. Otherwise, the list of top violinists I like very much is long. My overall favorite is Shoji Sayaka. Others I like particularly much are Julia Fisher, Vadim Repin, James Ehnes, Itzhak Perlman, Francesca Dego, Midori, Sarah Chang, Isabelle Faust, Akiko Suwanai and of course also Hilary Hahn.

It seems like I am hearing it for the first time when actually the first time was about 50 years ago. How is it even humanly possible to produce such exquisite music?

      Hilary’s point must be that Joachim’s cadenza is so familiar to listeners that it is sometimes rushed by soloists wishing to show off. Here she just allows it to breathe (and show why it is still beloved beyond the notion that it is the first one for this concerto).

      I don't like her dancing and her gestures towards the orchestra (they are totally useless), but I normally don't look at the video, only listen to the music. I like her playing very much, altough this very Brahms performance of hers sounds a bit too "disciplined" to me. I look for more heaviness and fire and all kinds of drama. But this is still an excellent performance.

    • @1Aldreth
      @1Aldreth 8 лет назад +23

      this whole movement thing while playing is not something musicians do for show. most of the movement comes from feeling the music and is quite substancial for expressing rythm and dynamics. it is really hard to play energetic pieces without moving. in addition when playing with an orchestra as a soloist movement becomes the way of communicating with the conductor.

      +xbqchm That's the thing about Brahms, there is no room for interpretation. Brahms was a extreme perfectionist, meaning that with any of his work, how it's written is how it's suppose to be played.
      The fact that you think she is too "disciplined" remarks quite a bit on her skill

    some moments I love from the first movement:
    1:05 - this little tune played by some of the woodwinds reoccurs many times through the piece
    2:56 - this intense moment, and the way the sound fades in 2:59
    3:06 - the build up
    4:53 - just beautiful
    5:38 - something about this melody that goes on through 6:00 (also that tune i talked about earlier is being played at the end of that melody as well)
    7:19 - this beautiful melody that goes on through 7:50
    8:57 - this intense moment that goes on pretty much through 10:11 then switches at 10:12 to the soft melody we’ve heard before
    11:51 - that i’d add this too
    12:43 - building up to my favorite part of the piece
    13:12 - build up to the arrival at 13:20 (my favorite part)
    13:54 - the flute plays one of my favorite melody’s from earlier
    15:33 - this beautiful melody again
    22:00 the rest of the orchestra returns
    23:13 building up to the finale
    23:18 these double stops
    and thats pretty much it!
    reply with what you all think i should add

    Ok am I the only person who actually loves it when Hilary plays it still?! She definitely moves a lot more now than her earlier years, but I love it when she produce such beautiful, solid, consistent, and perfect tones. I love her playing regardless, but I think when she plays it still, her impeccable skills completely stand out. Watching her produce that perfection is an art.

    I have heard this concert with so many great violinists, but this is the best perfomance of them all.
    Hilary is outstanding and simply better than the rest!

      How can you compare a recording with live performances (experienced live by you, I mean)? I have attended three suberb performances of this concerto by Anne-Sophie Mutter, Salvatore Accardo and Schlomo Mintz (all in the late 1980s or early 90s). At a lower level (in my opinion) were Nigel Kennedy (because of his noisy foot stomping), Dmitri Sitkovetsky and others. I'm looking forward to seeing Hilary Hahn perform live (Mendelssohn) in Madrid this weekend (27-29 January 2017).

      I can't, because I'm not compare live performances I've been to with recordings. I compare this concert with my own records (I have three versions, Perlman, Kremer and Kennedy), other RUclips clips and on Spotify and in my opinion no one plays this better than Hilary! I was on Hilarys concert in Stockholm when she played Mendelssohn and it was amazing, so you really have something to look forward to!

      After posting my commentary I expected you would say you were comparing recordings. It was I who suggested you were mixing up live performances with recordings. Anyway, I saw and heard Hilary Hahn play Mendelssohn's concerto on Saturday, 28 January 2017 and she had me in a trance and drove me to tears in the first movement. I must say, I haven't heard anyone play better than her. As far as recordings go, I've got quite a few of the Brahms concerto, including Oistrakh, Menuhin (with two or three different conductors), Mutter and Hahn. I enjoy all of them but there's nothing like a live performance with a good violinist.

      @@Stam56 In the end, Hilary Hahn brought me to tears with her Mendelssohn. Everything was so perfect and so intense, live at the concert hall. The second part of the concert was way beelow standard after hearing her play. It was also with a conductor who had to step in at short notice, so he wasn't able to do much in terms of rehearsing.

      @@paulsomers6048 It's a concerto - a soloist with orchestra. The performance is collective but the roles are not equal. Brahms in his concertos has integrated the soloist and the orchestra far more completely than most others save Bach.

      @@musicola7371 Of course it's a concerto with all that implies. But various soloists approach their solo role differently. Ms. Hahn's attitude is often that of a chamber musician. She always recognizes the other musicians on stage and even looks at them for ensemble purposes.

    I love the smile on the face of the older man viola right around 10:00. That is the reason you play in orchestra right there. A connection with a neighbor, probably - they both enjoyed that sudden burst of glorious C major forte from the brass and timpani. Great moment, great pacing by Paavo right there.
