I'm in love with this channel. The script he writes is dense of informations, well thought out and structured to give an exhausting introduction to the arguments. As someone who platonically enjoys philosophy I really appreciate it
Wisdom is the humility in knowing I know nothing, and in doing what I know, I do nothing and something at the same time. When I do this, engaged in the doing, all is well.
I love Stoicism. My biggest piece of advice is to avoid the self help, money chasing “grind” motivational whatever you wanna call it. They do not cover the 4 Stoic virtues, and use Stoicism for their businesses.
For me, stoicism has like 3 or 4 really solid ideas and the rest doesn’t work. Acknowledgment of one’s circumstances is good. I respect integrity (being honest with oneself) and like that aspect of amor fati; not to wish for things to happen in any way other than how they happen. Hope is an illusion that robs you of the present I like how it reminds you of the only certainty in life, death. Puts things in perspective. I like the focus on things one has control over vs what is outside of our control. Aside from those 3 things, I don’t believe in “living in accordance with nature”, asceticism of any kind or the subjugation of human passions
What do you mean by internal world? I’ve heard you can’t even control them but negotiate with them in a sense. I’m here to have an argument. “Stoicsm is meant to give you a means to be rational about your emotions” but emotions don’t seem to be rational, many things in life don’t seem to be rational so why would I conduct myself completely rational when we’re filled with inner contradictions and mysteries?

But I get the vibe that other people are just being delusionally happy & when their house burns down they’re like: this is fine, 0% anger bc ima stoic. As if having controlled (even healthy) emotions don’t exist. Many emotions in excess are bad (people with lack of emotions are also a challenge) but some think reasonable feelings are to be outcast. Ive been exposed to stoicism and have tried to practice it on my own but due to lack of material or just pure laziness haha I cant seem to get a proper grasp on it.. but now Ill try to seriously develop it, so is there any books that can be recommended to further my understanding of stoicism?
The antidote to uncertainty? Trust/faith. Also, humans have no "nature." And reason? Well whose reason? Why can two people "reason" their way to different conclusions, look what "reason" has done to the environment, etc.
Stoicism seem to be lower than Lao Tzu/Zhuangzi Taoism in that it still is operating in the duality of good/evil, albeit internally… “The truly good man is not aware of his goodness, and is therefore good. The foolish man tries to be good, and is therefore not good”… Tao Te Ching
Why should I be "good" if death is the end of everything? What is being "bad" is more fulfilling? If so "reason" tells me to be bad. This whole stoicism thing is full of problems.
You chose pretty much the perfect time to make a video on stoicism, as I'm sure you're well aware. I've always wanted to read Marcus Aurelius; maybe now during the pandemic would be a good time to do that. Thanks for the great video!
stoicism is alright, and good for a lot of people. im of the belief that a lot of CBT is based on it. but imo, as someone who is disabled, its not as good for disabled individuals. for that i think absurdism is more preferable
Visualizing what would happen if you lost everything you care about can be good, but IMO it's better to visualize HOW you would loose everything. Exactly what steps do you know that you might feel tempted to follow that will lead you down the path to loosing everything? That is a much better question.

I hope no one takes the first Ideas to far and becomes the typical Thanks-I'm-Cured idiot. With some illnesses you can't regulate the internal World and it is still a exercise for a healthy Person. Sadly the world isn't so easy as "You can change your internal World, so change your attitude" I'm not saying these Ideas aren't helpfull, just that you use them in moderation. Some People need a long time to get their internal world under their grip (and that is Okay and that applies to healthy people too. And complete control isn't achievable nor healthy) and some never do but learn to get help or not to act out their thoughts, for some medication helps. But what certainliy never helps is a pseudo motivational troll, berating someone because "It is just in your mind" and "Your not even trying" or exploiting a vulnerable Person.
I don't want to sound like a wannabe philosopher but taking one of your examples - The masks we wear in our daily lives have in fact made us acutely aware of the halitosis. We are all together in this internal struggle. ;)

As a daily practitioner of Stoicism I thank you for this video.
Really appreciate all you do. And your voice is comforting as well. Cheers!
Hm, random me: can you list some small actions for being stoic? Resume so I can get it easy
Im a teenager that faces problems as anybody does, but still doesnt have enough skill in dealing with them internally nor externally.
Stoicism seem to be lower than Lao Tzu/Zhuangzi Taoism in that it still is operating in the duality of good/evil, albeit internally…
“The truly good man is not aware of his goodness, and is therefore good. The foolish man tries to be good, and is therefore not good”…
Tao Te Ching
Why should I be "good" if death is the end of everything? What is being "bad" is more fulfilling? If so "reason" tells me to be bad. This whole stoicism thing is full of problems.
So uhh.. basically Islam without the worship of Allah.. yeah. Islam already thought me all this. Plus much more.
really? thats pretty cool.
@@seignee just being honest.
Worst Job market ever? looks like the best one, according to all of the people staying home.
9:52, I think that’s a picture of Epicurus not Epictetus. If you google both names you damn near get the same picture tho, could be wrong.
You chose pretty much the perfect time to make a video on stoicism, as I'm sure you're well aware. I've always wanted to read Marcus Aurelius; maybe now during the pandemic would be a good time to do that.
Thanks for the great video!
This is gang shit
Just imagine sisyphus happy bro
stoicism is alright, and good for a lot of people. im of the belief that a lot of CBT is based on it. but imo, as someone who is disabled, its not as good for disabled individuals. for that i think absurdism is more preferable
Visualizing what would happen if you lost everything you care about can be good, but IMO it's better to visualize HOW you would loose everything. Exactly what steps do you know that you might feel tempted to follow that will lead you down the path to loosing everything? That is a much better question.
In response to the- we suffer more in imagination that in reality. Do we not also rejoice more in imagination and even exist more in imagination also?
Idk, it always felt to me as a technique to lower your spectations low enough so you can deal with them.
Thank you, this video was amazing :)
I'm going down to the funeral parlor to pick out my coffin, after all at least now I can control the color and style, unless they cremate me, hmm.

I hope no one takes the first Ideas to far and becomes the typical Thanks-I'm-Cured idiot.
With some illnesses you can't regulate the internal World and it is still a exercise for a healthy Person.
Sadly the world isn't so easy as "You can change your internal World, so change your attitude"
I'm not saying these Ideas aren't helpfull, just that you use them in moderation.
As someone who loves Stoicism, I agree. If you’re suffering, go see a therapist.
Thanks for making this! The one book I recommend to people in dire straits is Meditations. That book helped me out of some very dark times.
Anger and fear are only painful because they are unexpected. Expect the worst, and you shall overcome any of the worst.
I absolutely like the way you use questions to link different ideas of the same topic.
Keep up with this awesome content!
I will miss nothing, as everything I need is within me. When I am not, everything I need will still be as it was and I will always be in this bliss.
Hold on, I imagine my family brutaly dieing, with grafic details, all my life, I don't need someones help for that, I can do it myself!
I need help xD
Nice video but you should work on the audio. It's really bad
Pulled at my heartstrings. Some good shit
How exactly is the realization that most things are out of our control supposed to be anxiety reliving?
You cannot control them, so you instead should focus on controlling the internal. Accepting what's beyong one's reach is the one of the goals.
the background music has me wondering if someone is downstairs, i don’t know why
I don't want to sound like a wannabe philosopher but taking one of your examples - The masks we wear in our daily lives have in fact made us acutely aware of the halitosis. We are all together in this internal struggle. ;)
6:04 I sincerely thought you were going to say "your smartphone"
