WWI is an interesting case in that nobody necessarily wanted to start a global war but the system of alliances -- and bad timing, and bad statecraft -- turned a dispute between Serbia and Austria-Hungary into a slaughterhouse. I don't know much about the Russo-Japanese War but the Confederacy clearly threw down a gauntlet and the Union fumblingly picked it up; again, bad timing and a succession of bad generals turned the Union's inevitable victory into a four-year slaughterhouse with horrors on both sides.

It could also stand to use the scifi a bit more. For example in the one about Topa's gender restoration surgery, they missed a good opportunity for Topa to discover the truth after feeling something was off by using the machine that's used for simulating dead alien races using their DNA... or at least used it to see what she was meant to be.
Nope, just a really interesting bit of scifi tech that mattered so little, it and the b-plot it was involved in could've been deleted and nothing would've been missed.

maybe as enemies, or maybe the reason they went extinct will come back to bite everyone's arse.
We already have seen multiple callbacks to stuff that happened in episodes further back in pretty big and fundamental ways (and minor as well).
I wouldn't be surprised if it got touched upon a season or two from now.
They seem to be gradually establishing lore and tech that they then can come back to at later point in time.

@@toddkes5890 Yes and No. I agree that they are one of the few who survived and many high rankers died. but given the fact that there are quiet a few admirals I don't think they are at the top. My biggest idea why they became top dog is because of their many successful missions and most likely, this time, because of Isaac and the fact that they made "The weapon" (which is not out of ordinary or simple plot convenience, given that weapon won't be made without Kaylon's superintelligence and a being, who can think in 4 dimensions, Charly). So, given that this 2 important figures are on Orville and captain being very successful diplomat, they became the pivotal point of this conflict.
PS. in this season they even justified Orville being pivotal point for Union vs Krill conflict(which most likely would be next season), by making Ed father of Anaya.
Edit: it's not that they are best of the best. They simply are right people at the right time.

The arms swaying is an integral part for the stability in natural bipedal locomotion. Even if you think you don't you will always sway your arms while walking or running , even if it's just a little bit. If the kaylons were programmed with the same algorythm for moving they will sway their arms too and since their stance is so rigid they compensate with a more conspicuous swaying of the arms, it's in their programming. And also since they're played by ordinary people, the movement just comes naturally.

Just the knowledge that such a weapon is possible means that others could quickly redevelop it so taking the device back only delays the situation. Also, it's clear that the weapon exploits some failsafe built into the Kaylons so presumably counter measures could also be quickly developed and applied as a security patch. The cat is already out of the bag with this weapon, both replication by others and effective counter measures are now inevitable.

I really wish that I could include a species I created for my old Sci-Fi series into The Orville universe.
They were engineered inorganic lifeforms, created as tools to terraform planets. Unlike the Kaylon's creators, the creators of these lifeforms (known as the Intermediaries, the Inert, Catalysts, or just Gray) were jovial and benevolent. They cherished any and everything they made, seeing destruction as an unfortunate compromise for even greater creation. The Gray were their magnum opus, with a collective mind that was built into the fabric of time and space itself. Each individual was nigh indestructible and physically imposing, but, like their creators, unwaveringly benevolent. Each individual specialized in some form of planet crafting, some with scopes as massive as planetary rotational speed, magnetosphere generation, and continental crafting, others as minute as genetic restructuring, atmospheric composition, and atomic weaving. Each job was as equal with another, and with their collective, they could not only tap into the skills and experience of another, but even interchange minds as needed.
While they could throw mountains, crush stone, and consume metal, they didn't understand the concept of war or violence. If any would wish to do them harm, they'd ignore it. If they prevented their progress, they'd curl up into a ball and wait. If they threatened another lifeform, they'd wall them off. They speak, not with words, but with understanding, comprehending speech, emotions, thoughts, and reasons on instinct.
