I personally think Nioh pays homage to more classic games like onimusha, tenchu or even ninja gaiden to certain extend. It's really hard to compare it to DS only cause of bonfire / boss mechanics. Does it feel fresh, no it doesn't. However it brings back this ps1/ps2 vibes of '90/ early '00 what does make me feel getting it was worth it.

    In dark souls:
-status points literally compliments what you invest it with which is good for those that plays perseverance gameplay style and will finish it eventually (dead? put more hp. weak? put more str. etc).
-all item and equip stats, effects and locations are fixed (example: good equip, less damage specially on early areas etc).
-can get endgame items, equipments and skills early
-can finish the game at level 1 only (did it in dark souls 1).
-can be finished with pure melee, pure magic or hybrid without too much effort and planing.
-can be played and enjoyed by casual players (something to leave, and comeback to try again with less destroyed controllers).
-game mechanics for you to explore but has upfront gameplay.
-gradual difficulty increase with area progress (unless done random routes, ex: going for quelaag as 2nd boss)
-mostly difficult overall (stage, mobs, boss)
    In nioh:
-status points has very less compliments the stat in description, needs 60 levels on the specific stat to show results (which equal to dark souls by 25-30 levels only, 60% of overkill damage). most of the time only increased to gain equip effects.
-all equipable items' stats and effects are broadly random and has less noticeable difference with each other (anything you wear does not guarantee better survival or unkillability) unless you soul forge one to increase its level and defence multiplier as you can also inherit effects or reforge to change its effects
-can't get endgame items, equipments and skills early, grinding is needed for drop and unlocks
-can't be finished at level 1 only, everything needs continuous leveling up.
-can't be finished or even get past 7th boss with pure melee or pure magic without precise effort in planing. hybrid is the best option.
-not for casual players, too complicated (mostly absolute rage quit with destroyed controllers).
-game mechanics are put upfront and mildly practiced in "basic" tutorial but sometimes or most of the time thrown at you on "advance" scenario (like having a lesson and test from your math teacher, a puzzle to figure out or learning to dance to the rhythm).
-instant but constant "advance" difficulty behaviors for mobs and bosses
-mostly difficult are the stages and mobs themselves, bosses are most of the time easier (with understanding 75-80% of the game mechanics).
Had my game ender character for darsouls after 4 startovers (all 3 from before the 4th boss), while having my game ender character for nioh after 32 startovers (30 before 2nd boss, 1 after 5th boss tachibana)
darksouls - learning to be you
nioh - learning to be someone else while being you

@@Bourikii2992 I think he said that if you do a pure build, that it will take a lot more precise planning in the fights. Whereas in other games if you put everything into strength, you eventually just do so much damage that some enemies become trivial.

    • @Bourikii2992
      @Bourikii2992 4 года назад

@@johannschmidt5305 That really depends. Doing a pure mage build in NIOH is OP as hell. What he was saying is that more stat investment is needed to get good results from said stat. Which is a good thing. It's dumb in Souls that pretty much all stats are useless beyond 40-50. Why have 99 as the max if it adds like 5 extra dps to the build.

You should focus more on Nioh as a game then compare it to a game that really isnt that as simular to Nioh as they wanna make it seam. Dark Souls is my favurite series aswell but right now i think Nioh is the best fucking game that has and will be realesed this year. i liked your video and i guess mentioning dark souls is inevitable, but from times it feelt like that was all you did. comparing everything to dark souls. I feel that the soulslike games are getting hurt integrity by allways getting so compared with the series itself. its like comparing CS with doom kinda. both are fps

    • @JimboCruntz
      @JimboCruntz 5 лет назад

I completely agree. I get the comparisons need to be made but it shouldn't be to the detriment of the game you a reviewing. It also shouldn't be to the detriment of how you play nioh. In this video when bun mentioned being "a dark souls veteran" watch the gameplay, the stamina is completely drained, there are no ki pulses and the player escapes by blocking and maneuvering backwards. This is how you play dark souls, this is also how you die in nioh. I get its a soulslike, but that's it, a soulslike not a soulsclone.

Everything is almost exactly like Dark Souls if the game was submerged in tar and lost its soul. I'll sum it up:
Everything feels painfully slow, the "rogue" class is the only one that attacks at an even half decent speed and even that feels too slow.
The animations and sound effect don't help either with feedback from attacks not feeling as impactful as they should.
Some enemies are cheap and can hit you for high damage almost always before you can even get within striking range and they are often situated at the end of corridors leading to more frustration than you already had from the slow combat.
None of the specialist abilities are all that interesting or new or even necessarily all that useful either really.
The story is really boring and the protagonist is about as generic as generic grizzled buff dude gets and the world is pretty boring to look at as well.
I gave up about half way through despite having completed Dark Souls 1-3 more than once and despite loving that kind of game. It wasn't too hard or anything, I just did not have the will to see it to completing because the game was a chore to play through.

I think it's good but...I'm not a fan of dying in one mistake. I'm a huge souls fan, been playing since Demon's Souls and even though they were unforgiving, they weren't nearly as fast. Boss enemies in Nioh feel like trial and error until you get through the fight without making any mistakes at all.
Obviously doable, but It still salted my fries, especially on that hime-enma thing.

  • @wazzupman245
    @wazzupman245 7 лет назад +4

Basically, level design, environment design, and boss and enemy design isn't as good as Dark Souls. The feel of the player character is better in Nioh. Difficulty wise, Nioh is more punishing when you do get hit, but it's far easier to not get hit in Nioh. This creates a feeling of annoyance when you die in Nioh because you slipped up and made one mistake and now you're dead. Whereas in Dark Souls it takes a string of mistakes to result in your death. There's a Samurai boss you can fight that I believe is optional and he killed me more than some of the hardest bosses in the Soulsbourne series combined but when I beat him, I didn't yell "FUCK YEAH!" like those other bosses, I said, "Finally..."
The loot system is interesting. I like it, as it adds a lot of replayability and incentive to do the side missions, but it is certainly contentious. Although there are several ways to upgrade pieces of gear that you like in order to keep them relevant.
Dark Souls is more of an experience. Creatively it's just far superior even when you take away the fact that Nioh wouldn't exist in its current form without it. Nioh is much more gamey and fun. Even when you're mowing down random enemies it's still enjoyable even if it is relatively easy.

I'm definitely loving this one, more than dark souls even. mainly because of the combat system and how the strategy plays out. it just feels more fair, difficult for the right reasons as you said. not many ambushes and not overwhelming.

I never finished Ni-Oh, I made it halfway through and became very bored of the enemies. It seemed like to me there weren't enough types. In Dark Souls every single area just about has very varied and completely different looking enemies. In Ni-Oh they just drop in 50 of those big undead samurai with axes, and the same sword and dual sword yokais, then call it a day. I mastered killing them in the very first area to the point where I never get hit by them anymore. Why do I want to keep fighting them over and over?

The biggest difference between Dark souls and Nioh is, in Dark Souls even you have the best armor set and weapon in the game, you can still die quite easily if you don't know what you're doing. But in Nioh you can always farm your way out. And with the right gear and high level, you can literally just smash buttons through the game. To me it's like classic Castlevania and Symphony of the night in comparison.

    • @kuroganekaze

Here's the thing, what he did in those isn't gear based, it's item based, you know, the stuff you can buy in the store, like you can in Souls games. And while in Souls games you don't have a Living Weapon equivalent (at least I believe you don't) you can beast on enemies with the best armor and weapon. Just like in Nioh you can still dies with the strongest armor and weapons on you. Also notice that the only reason the first video worked was because of the sheer amount of buffs and debufs he applied before the battle.

Having played through base game Nioh myself, here with three praises and one criticism of this beautiful game...
    1. One nuance of the stat system I really like over Dark Souls is that each stat levels up at least one type of weapon damage, regardless of the stat. The bigger influences are listed by the beginning when you select your first weapon, but they all level up some things. I like this a lot, as it ensures that no matter how you're building your William you won't be held back or punished, and always have at least some options available to you (so, for example, even if you decide to go full tank you'll still get damage bonuses for a couple weapons, so you won't fall behind or have to rely on particular tricks to maintain damage). Both specialization and diversifying are rewarded, and it's all down to your skill to succeed. Plus the game lets you reset your levels, if you want to try different play styles or do certain missions locked by a stat requirement.
    2. Like ButterBuns was saying, the difficulty. It is indeed mostly fair. There are some moments of bullocks, particularly in some of the challenges and post-story content... but these are the people who made Ninja Gaiden, that ought to be expected. For the most part, though, the obstacles and bosses are within reason, its just a matter of learning timings and keeping your cool.
    3. The way they handle the soul bunch items, the Amrita crystals. ButterBuns brought up the spirit form system; but what she didn't go into here is that the gauge for your spirit form is filled by collecting Amrita, by hitting or killing enemies, picking up loot... and using the Amrita crystals, every one of which (even the tiny ones) fills a significant portion of the gauge. So unlike in other Souls-like games, where the options for the soul bunches are 1. use right away or 2. use when time to level up or buy stuff, here there's also the option of keeping them around for when you need some help from your spirit buddy. It's an ingenious system, and I really appreciate the thought that went into that.
Now, the criticism... the loot/equipment. It's implementing multiple systems that do not synergize well.
As for actually getting equipment, there are two main ways of doing it: forging/buying the equipment from the smithy, or drops from enemies, kind of like Diablo. And like Diablo, there's an inventory limit, one which is maintained by dropping stuff you don't want, selling it, or offering it at shrines for Amrita (the souls equivalent in this game). Also like Diablo, equipment comes with random benefits, such as added elemental damage, increased damage with form attacks or critical hits, increases in certain types of defense, et cetera; and you can reforge certain pieces to try to change the benefits.
Now, this by itself creates a similar-ish problem to Diablo, where keeping your equipment updated (oh, also equipment has levels) may mean sacrificing some nice benefits, and your gear does matter more here than in Diablo (there is a way to "update" equipment to keep up in levels, but in most cases that's more trouble than it's worth)... but that's a relatively minor thing.
What isn't a minor thing is the affinity system. Every individual weapon has an "affinity" gauge, which you increase by fighting with that weapon. Raising affinity increases the weapon's damage and potency of the random benefits, lets you transfer that weapon's benefits to something else, and also makes the weapon more valuable when offered at shrines. This would be a lot better if it weren't for equipment having levels, but thanks to that you will have to grind out anything you want to raise affinity with, the rate of which depends on your level, so you'll have to keep going to higher level missions for efficiency, which is a problem if you're just raising weapons to offer or get one of their benefits... while having to worry about your gear keeping up with either your levels or enemy difficulty. And your inventory maxing out from all that new stuff you keep getting. (You can't access the smithy while on a mission, so while you're in one offerings or discards are your management options)
So they simultaneously have a system that encourages committing to, or at least sticking with for a while, certain weapons, *and* a discard-and-draw system that encourages switching up your gear frequently. That, I'd say, is the game's only significant flaw... though it's still an impactful one.

Disassemble the weapons and armors you pick up that you don't want at the blacksmith and then craft better materials from the materials you get off those weapons and armor. Use the forge feature to make cool armor and weapons with the materials you get and customize to for better rarity

I tried getting into Dark Souls, Dark Souls III and Bloodborne. I can't play any of them for more than a few hours. It's a pain in the butt trying to figure everything out in them, I constantly get ambushed straight from the beginning of the game when I'm trying to figure everything out, and although I can overlook steep learning curves in some games, I just don't enjoy the gameplay enough to put up with the frustrations.
From what it sounds like, Nioh sort of fixes the problems I have with the Souls games. So, I'll try this one out. Thanks for the rundown! I've been on the fence with this game for quite some time now. Thanks Twinkie lady!

60fps720p vs 30fps1080p option is just as great as a difficulty select option. It is brilliant, will please everyone, and more publishers need to allow this.

1:17 Just a little bit of clarification here, Nioh is not Team Ninja's pet project. It actually started as a Koei game, who went through several companies to try and finish it (including Omega Force, their Dynasty Warriors sweatshop factory). Team Ninja were just the company that were handed the project and shipped a finished game with it.

I think a real telltale sign is how similar the overall art appearance of the world and interface looks like the Dark Souls one. I think a style more inspired by the culture and lore they were referencing could have helped it look more singular. Maybe even slightly brighter coloring (like a painting) would have helped. It just looks like a retread to someone who hasn't played it all the way through

You can thank the beta testers for the not-so-mobby enemy spacings and aggro ranges. The initial beta had way more enemy groups and ambushes, and when a lot of players mentioned their disdain for that in the feedback the devs entirely redesigned their enemy placement around that feedback. The mission after the tutorial was the level used for the first beta and it was really surprising to me when I didn't get ambushed at certain points where I remembered it happening in the demo. And I don't say that in a bad way, in fact quite the opposite. I was really glad to see that aspect reworked, as overuse of enemy groups and ambushes was my biggest complaint with Dark Souls II.

I think that the combining of Dark Souls gameplay principles and applying them to new ideas really is an encouraging thought. A more straight forward story with a well executed take on dark souls gameplay, unlike Lords of the Fallen which was poorly executed, set in a new environment sounds like a great idea. I love the vague lore of Dark souls and the theory crafting as much as the next guy, but every now and then but a direct story is a good thing. Hopefully the writing in this game is good or at least decent, writing standards in the modern game industry aren't great right now.
