Showurite Fantastic video , the way you explained and showed step by step...really helps i think even i could adjust...take care and stay SAFE ! THANK YOU ...Scott @ George Farmer Trucking
Good info. Its to easy to not know how. Thanks for the info
Appreciate the tips, my man. Not hard to do at all. 💯👍
2 things you forgot to to tell . One you need to chalk the wheel's 2 the brakes has to be released on which other one your settings the brakes on truck or trailer to get the proper setting . The rest is pretty much right 👍
Chalking them wont help, chocking them will tho 😅
Also you don't need to release the front brakes as they don't have an emergency spring. lefty loosy righty tighty works on the adjuster too so you don't wear out the Paul. once adjusted you want to apply brakes 6 times for the slack to auto adjust. this is the proper way you forgot to mention.
@@hphggr9652 True! That's how my boss got ran over! 🤣
It is an automatic slack adjuster, leave it alone. Every time it is adjusted backwards (loosen) you damage the clutch a little more.Setting a slack with checking freestroke is a recipe for brake drag.
Yup you can back the steer brakes off a 1/4 turn if you like the smell of burning brakes and trying to fly the next time you got to hit the brakes hard if they aint burnt off by then
Or you could just back the brakes off a 1/2 turn when you adjust your steer brakes and avoid the smell and not fly when you got to hit the braks hard
I thought it was a 1/2 turn also I haven't adjusted brakes in over 8 years but that's what I thought
L yeah!
Generally a half turn. Theres no way I'd put steers at a quarter turn out unless the wheel was off the gound and I could see what it felt like.
Lubricate slack adjuster Clevis pins and make sure they spin freely . Use locking pliers to rotate . Clevis pins with hex heads are easier to turn .
The on going debate between the 1/4 turn and the 1/2 turn continues.
Generally a half turn. But sometimes quarter turn is enough. Depending on your slack, and the condition your shoes/drums. Basically just enough to free spin. I prefer to do them up off the ground of if I can. I'm a mechanic, not a driver.
@@rowe4x4 1/4 of turn 1/2 of turn won't matter, those are automatic adjust slack adjuster, when adjusting the breakes you are only gettinge them close enough to adjust by itself after driving 10'
@@LAHPLOCO but you can literally tell the slack adjust how you want them to tighten. call me the slack wisperer. depending on the mounting of the arm, (depending on the type of slack adjuster) or the angle of the yolk on a two pin style slack. that sets up where the slack will adjust. and you are right though about adjusting the auto slack. only time you should is when you do brakes because if you need to adjust it something has failed and legally needs to be replaced
All depends what type brake chamber you have and what state you’re in too.CA is up to 2 inches some states are less.
Should use a wrench instead of a ratchet. The ratchet has to much play. The wrench is more accurate.
Great job explaining!
"Automatic slack aduster " means just that if your automatic slack is out of adjustment you better to be checking everything in the system to find out why your auto slack is not or cant do its job
thats why he says not for automatic slacks. dumb on his part for showing a how to video on something that doesnt even have a product (like a manual slack adjuster) in his video
Good stuff. Thank you for taking the time to make this video.
I subscribed from make cents recommendation. Good video
Thank you boss man appreciate it
I will have to say "" Showurite "" Good job, and thank you
Nice and easy, thanks. Make cents sent me here
1st day in cdl school i needed this
Come winter time or on ICY roads, or slick logging roads, do 1/4 turn on all brakes EXCEPT front, do 1/2 turn on front so if you lock up you still have your front tires rollin and not sliding off in the ditch or off a cliff.
Respect. You are helpful.
Good demo
Very informative video brother 👍👍
Thank you Sir , I will adjust mine tomorrow .
Do you need the brakes released to adjust the front same as you would do for the rest of the truck and trailer
Thank you Mr 🇺🇸👍🏻🍻
Thanks for the knowledge
I like practical , thank you keep it up
Excellent video thanks ah million
Thanks man
Good video sir. Thank you.
Thank you!!!
Heck yeah my brother
What about the maple thing you have to pull out with the screwdriver?
That would be a Meritor slack adjuster. Theres a few different types/brands of slacks. I have a tool for it, but I work on them every day. Otherwise its usually a 7/16 of any regular automatic slack adjuster
Great video thanks man!
Go back two quarters you mean? Quarter turn is equal to 90 degrees or 3/9 o'clock from 12 if u use clock system to measure angles.
I have a 1987 Toyota one ton pickup chassis with a motor home built on it!!! 4 clyinder, automatic trans, rear wheel drive with a proportional valve in the back. The left fronf wheel locks up and skids. With light braking. But the truck does not stop very well!
I put a new master clyinder on because it was leaking.. Also put a new vacuum booster. Still the front break locking up, then put new pads and calipers up fromt!!! Still not stopping. The I just put a new proportional valve and now it still locks up and hardly stops. When I bleed the brakes I get fluid out of the proportional valve. But now I don't get any fluid out of the bleeders on the drum brakes.
What should I do????
Larry
How do you adjust the valve????
thank you sir,,,,
Thank You for showing.
Thank you brother !
Slack adjuster will turn easy one way to tighten and it's almost impossible to turn other way to back off. Assistance please. I released brakes
Pull the pin out on the front of the slack adjuster then turn it. Fyi u have a self adjusting Slack adjuster
Thank you Sir!!
appreciate the video bruh.
You didn't say if breaks are released when adjusting
He was adjusting steers so it doesn't matter. They only have a service chamber. But yes, as for drives or trailers with spring brakes you will need them released to adjust
I always wondered how to adjust the brakes...thanks bro
Ive always thought like most commenters that automatic means just that .so if is case when brakes are out of adjustment whatnis proper way yo correct
My Freightliner Columbia does look anything like that. What kind of rig is this?
Make cents brought me here...New O/O...

Nice job!!
Thanks bruh👍
what time is it?
Finally a nice easy video on this
Umm...Did you release the breaks to do this? And maybe you should re-watch a video on how to adjust the breaks...js
Gotta be 1 1/4 to 11/2 from release to applied chamber stroke my man. Good job tho.
Can you explain a little more
@@rf-qp4yi when u release your brakes chalk your wheels measure the distance from the chamber Rod base (where u can't measure nomore) to the clevis (where the pin goes into on the slack adjuster) . Oncee u got that number apply the brake pedal and re measure the distance same way as before. The difference should be 11/4 to 11/2 preferably 13/8 to 11/2
@@jcramirez2233 thank you i appreciate it
@@jcramirez2233 the allowable stroke length varies depending on which size chamber you have. So if it's a chamber that's allowed 1 3/4 inch travel that's the max allowed. It can have less travel just not more. Some chambers are allowed 2" of travel some 2.5" etc.. so make sure you know what size chamber you have.
So the white mark goes on before i adjust?
On Volvo they said 1/2 turn counterclockwise after tightening , you said 1/4 turn counterclockwise after tightening clockwise, can you clear that out?
I go with 1/4 turn.
I worked at Schneider as a mechanic and we did 1/2 turn counter clockwise.
Is 1/2 equal to 180 degrees? or 6 from 12 if you measure angles with clock system? By the way does Schneider hire overseas truck drivers these days? I am looking for a job in North America right now.
@@Old-bald-lazy yes 180 degrees or 6 to 12 or 9 to 3. Not sure you'd have to contact them. I dont work there anymore
You forgot to tell to release the breaks before adjustet
do you have to build up the air first then release the brakes?
Brad Ward yes
Also, make sure you chuck your wheels.
what about the rear brakes?
thanks
Can you change the water pump for me now
It’s is 1/2 a turn back. And furthermore if you need to be explained step by step what half a turn back looks like, just as the fellow is showing you , then you should not adjust them yourself.
That's for those folks who can't count change back.
TURNED TO 8 O'CLOCK BY ACCIDENT LOL
Make cents sent me here good info thanks
1/3 turn... at 12 turn to 2 or 10.. not 1/4 thats over. older ones wher 1/2 inch total max
Do you hear that constant air leak when the brake pedal was pressed? Ya that is also normal too..... NOT! As accurate as this info may have been..... it is terrible info for a few fundamental reasons.
It amazes me that automatic slack adjusters have been the law for twenty years now and people still make this many mistakes about them.
💀🖤
First time with a ratchet
Gracias mi negrito thanks my niggaa
Dam it so I could of had avoided this dumb warning from Texas DOT front brake driver side out of adjustment. Hahahahh the sad part was it was a young female DOT that looked like my 7 year old hahHahaahha
Best way to fix that is quit this job🙇♂️
its not a 1/4 turn, and its also different for all slacks and brakes, first this is assuming the slack is working, then all you do is tighten it up all the way then back it off so that when you make a brake application the pushrod and slack make a 90 degree angle, if you do what this genius is telling you to do your brakes will be so tight they'll either burn up or send you through the windshield, and another thing unless its your own truck please dont touch the brakes if you dont know what your doing, for the love of god have a brain.
Your accent ahaiayht however you need to show the brake ajuster good
Beetle juice from Howard Stern show
I didn't learn nothing but black African acent
Neftali Camacho es por que eres un pendejo bro
Shut the hell up with your jealous ass
Sad video
Cut those gross fingernails!! and use the proper ranch (Wrench) LOL and the DOT will NOT allow you to adjust your brakes roadside as you are not a certified mechanic/
I bet your man loves them long nails my girl has nails that long I love getting my back scratched by her
