The conflict in South Sudan has had a significant impact on livestock production, with an estimated real loss of between USD 3.35 and USD 5.08 billion in gross domestic production attributed to the sector. Livestock are important social and economic assets but endemic diseases undermine production. Milk and meat are major sources of food security for pastoral and agropastoral communities and critical to people’s survival in times of crisis.
Local and national capacity to monitor, control and respond to these diseases is very limited, but is now being supported by FAO. Also, damage to critical livestock infrastructure (notably the cold chain network, necessary for the viability of veterinary medicines and vaccines), have contributed to enhanced livestock morbidity and mortality rates. In 2018, FAO aims to vaccinate 7.4 million animals, treat 1.3 million animals and enhance the necessary infrastructure.
