Today’s Focus: Psalms 91 “The Benefits Of Trusting In God The Father”
    Author: Unknown
    Primary Text: Matthew 4:5-7 & Psalms 91
Psalms 91 reminds us of the benefits of trusting in God the Father. In times of trouble, the Father’s children can always run to the arms of their Heavenly Father. As we continue to grow in our knowledge and understanding of God and His word, we must remember that trusting in God goes far beyond memorizing our favorite Bible verse. This truth is highlighted in Matthew chapter 4, when God’s word shows us that even the enemies of God know how to quote passages of the Bible. Therefore, it is imperative that we study God’s word to keep ourselves anchored in the truth and the full council of God’s word (read Acts, chapter 20 for further study).
Before Jesus began his public ministry, Satan tried to get Jesus off course by quoting an excerpt from Psalms 91.
Satan misquotes the Bible. | Matthew 4:5-6
Matthew 4:5 Says “ Then the devil took him to the holy city, Jerusalem, to the highest point of the Temple, 6 and said, “If you are the Son of God, jump off! For the Scriptures say, ‘He will order his angels to protect you. And they will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.’”
Jesus set’s the record straight. | Matthew 4:7
In the same passage, Jesus sets the record straight by giving us an accurate understanding of God’s word. He reveals the true nature of God the Father’s heart by quoting from the book of Deuteronomy, one of the foundational books God personally gave to Moses. By quoting this passage in Deuteronomy, Jesus was teaching us that foolish faith does not please God and a lack of faith will keep you from enjoying the promises of God.
Matthew 4:7 Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the Lord your God.
This passage reminds us that God The Father is the same God, yesterday, today and forever. He loves His children, but we would be foolish to put God to the test. This kind of foolish testing is what prevented the Hebrews from entering their land of promise. Despite being in the middle of the desert, God provided protection from their enemies, refuge from the wild animals and elements, water and daily bread “manna” from heaven. God wanted His children to know that they could trust in their Heavily Father to provide for all of their needs. Sadly, because of a lack of faith and trust in God, many of the Hebrews tested God’s patience and mercy, by continuously murmuring and complaining about God’s provision. Because of a heart of unbelief and trust in their heavenly Father, many of the Hebrews took more manna than they could consume out of fear they would run out. As a consequence of unbelief, the Lord caused the extra food they took to spoil and rot overnight. Ultimately, their unbelief and lack of trust In their heavenly Father, prevented them from enjoying the fullness of God’s promises.
We worship the same God today. Do you trust Him?
