About the poem and video:
In June of 2022 the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade which had protected a women’s right to an abortion for nearly 50 years up until that point. Since then, several women have died and even more have been injured after many states have completely banned abortion, even in cases of rape or incest.
.
“Her Choice” explores the story of Nina Taylor, a young African American woman living in a state that has banned abortion, and after going to a back alley abortion clinic, she is killed by police in what they have dubbed “a raid gone wrong”. While Nina ponders her choice with great sadness, ultimately she decides to get an abortion, a choice that will ultimately end her life. However, the end of one life is the beginning of a new life in heaven, where she is reunited with her unborn child to “live out eternity on the other side”.
.
In addition to the story of Nina Taylor, I also wanted to dig into the spiritual ramifications of abortion and what happens to “all the unborn children that never made it here to Earth”. Because pro-life advocates claim that banning abortion is about saving unborn children from “murder” or some kind of “hell” because of the “sin” of the mother getting the abortion.
.
However, I believe that this is far from the truth. While I am a spiritual person that believes in God and an afterlife, I also believe God is All Merciful, not only to the mother getting an abortion but to the unborn soul that remains in heaven with “an army of innocents” and angels. The following quote from the Bahá’í Faith, gives me great solace that the station of unborn children in heaven is highly exalted and under the protection of the Creator. “These children abide under the shadow of the Divine Providence, and, as they have committed no sin and are unsullied by the defilements of the world of nature, they will become the manifestations of divine bounty and the glances of the eye of divine mercy will be directed towards them.” - ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Some Answered Questions
Lyrics:
Why are you trying to invade
My wife's uterus?
What gives you the right
To control my daughter's
Reproductive organs?
My mother chose
To give me life
And for that I'm eternally grateful
But there are many mothers
That bare the weight of that choice
Like a shackle on their neck
There are many women
Not ready to be mothers
Many girls not ready
To be women
Let alone mothers
To become a mother
Is one of the most important choices
A woman will ever make
And to not become a mother
Is one of the most important choices
A woman will ever make
BUT IT'S HER CHOICE!
Not some old white man
On the bully pulpit
Not some wolf in sheep's clothing
Claiming to do God's work
While stripping a woman's right to choose
And telling her she's going to hell
If she chooses the wrong way
You can't even imagine
The hell she is going through
To make that choice
She doesn't need you
Layering on your laws and guilt
To silence her choice
But you don't hear me
You want to take her choice away
Standing on your morale high ground
If you're so exalted above the rest
Saving the unborn
What about saving
The millions of children
Already born?
Born into poverty
Born into abuse and neglect
Born into violence and war
What are you going to do about that?
Before they're born, you're up in arms
After they're born, you drop your arms
And let them fall
If this is about doing God's work
What about the millions of babies
That need help right now?
When a mother chooses to terminate
She knows the weight of that decision
For it bears on her blood and bone
So heavy that it could break her spirit
And it often does
But it is her sacred choice
To choose the rights of her body
No one else
I know there is a special place in heaven
For all the unborn children
That never made it here to Earth
They are our angels
That we see in our dreams
An army of innocents
That whisper wisdom in our ears
And their message is clear
"I understand Mommy"
"I understand why you made your choice
And even though I long to be with you
In the material
I am always with you in the spiritual
And I can't wait till you get home
So we can be reunited
And live out eternity
On the other side"
