I was told they grow fast. This was one of the factors into me just buying three 6 inch long tails to start my own plant with. Could you please give me some advice on how and where to cut when propagating, is it the same as burros tail? also, when rooting the tails, could I use water or should I use another medium? Lastly, if one tail is potted up, will it remain only one tail or does it branch off?

Hi, to propagate your monkey tail cactus, cut off part of a stem and let it dry for a a few days or until the end forms a callus. Do not put in water because it could rot. Use a well draining cactus soil that has pumice. Avoid mediums with peat moss because it retains too much moisture and is too acidic. Keep outdoors in filtered sun. Your plant should begin to root in several weeks. The cut monkey tail cactus may likely branch off to produce new offsets while the cutting will remain a single tail. Hope this advice helps! Thanks for watching 🙏

@@CaliforniaCactusCenter Thank you so much for your reply! I will do all of that. However, when after placing in soil can I water it? Without roots, I risk rot. How shall I water until rooted?

@@meganpahl3612 Wait about a week before watering the cutting. When you let the raw end of the monkey tail cactus become callous, this process helps prevent root rot. After a week or so passes, then water the soil until it drains through the bottom of the drainage hole. Hope this information will help you! Thanks for your questions.
