  • I swore I didn't need any more overdrives, but I couldn't resist this one. This video has my first listen/reaction in it, plus using it in different positions to see where I like it best. I can't find a bad sound on it. I'll notate key sections soon if you'd like to skip ahead. Gear today, aside from the pedals, are my Kinghat Tele with Lollar 52 pickups, and my 50 watt Mesa Rectoverb on the clean channel.

    Hey Cody, This is very timely. I've been looking at the Lightspeed for a very long time. My current boost pedal just died so I've been looking for a new one. I like that the Lightspeed is so transparent but has some flexibilty with the frequency knob. The fact that it has just a little bit of amp-like compression, as you noted, will work perfect into my amp which has a solid state rectifier. It will hopefully give it some of that Fender amp feel. Thanks for this excellent demo. I think you've finally sold me. By the way, that Tele sounds killer! I LOVE Tele neck pickups. That's THE quintessential blues tone for sure.

    • @guitarfreak585
      @guitarfreak585  4 года назад

      Man I love this thing. The rectifier in this Mesa is also solid state, and the LS just gives it this very natural feeling squish. I use way too much gain as a general rule, but I felt really comfortable playing single note stuff with all the knobs at two o clock, and virtually no gain at all compared to what I'd normally use. I'm interested in trying it out with some humbuckers, might do that tomorrow. Thanks for watching!

      @@guitarfreak585 Yeah, I'm trying to use less gain these days as well. The other thing that you noted, that the Lightspeed adds a touch of bottom end, will suit my purposes very well. My amp is a little lean, and since I will be using it as a mostly "always on" pedal, this will definitely help to fill out the tone. Just waiting for one to come up on Ebay at less than full price. If that doesn't happen soon, I will have to bite the bullet and just go for it. No doubt it will be worth it. It's no wonder you don't see them on sale too often!

    You have just firmly tipped a purchase in favor of the Lightspeed. I've made myself cuckoo here on YT trying to discern whether I want a Lightspeed or a Wampler Belle (Eric's take on an ODR-1). You are a great player. What's more, you hear true "volume unity" like I do. So often, when people try to get a clean vs. effected sound, they have the apparent volume on the clean sound noticeably below that of the effected sound. You however, seem quite adept at the volume details! That Said, our preferences may not be identical. I had a Tumnus for about a year or so and although I certainly like it, it colored the tone of my amp too much. I swear, the Lightspeed seems to be a true "overtone enhancer," rather than a "tone-definer." Other than the overtones I hear, it might have a bit of high-end sheen. Still, it doesn't seem to get in the way of the amp's tone to me. Then again, I'm a fan of blonde and brown Fender amps, which are occasionally a bridge from Fender to early Marshall tones. Consequently, I'm thinking this pedal will fit just fine.

    • @guitarfreak585
      @guitarfreak585  4 года назад +3

      Thanks man! I don't like the EP Booster with the Mudhoney, it makes them too muddy, too much bass in there, so it doesn't matter what order those two are in. But I use them in this order; EP - Mudhoney - Lightspeed - and Tumnus. The tumnus is used as a solo boost, the Lightspeed is basically on all the time, it's not adding much drive, but it gives me that natural feeling compression that I like. So either I'll have the Mudhoney + LS for high gain, then boost with tumnus, or I'll kick the EP LS and tumnus all on at once and ride the volume control a lot. I've also recently been using a mini Tubescreamer in place of the EP, and I like that too. I'm gonna make an updated video this weekend of my drive section (and a break down of the whole board soon too). Thanks for watching!

I’m thinking I’ll put the GE-7 into the Lightspeed, into the amp and have the Lightspeed always on. Obviously I’ll try all combinations of pedal order, but will putting the GE-7 before the Lightspeed boost the gain or is it likely to just give me more volume?

    • @guitarfreak585

      With the GE first I would think it would push the Lightspeed and your amp, but! The Lightspeed seems to have a ton of headroom, so you might also get a volume jump. My favorite combo right now is to have the EP boost into the Lightspeed into the tumnus, all on at once and man it's great.
