Pretty much every country has their military orchestras, the US Marines have an orchestra (or windband) that is called The President's Own which does concerts, provides music at official functions. But the US military has loads more of these. The Dutch military service has three fulltime military orchestras: de Marinierskapel is the orchestra for the Royal Dutch Navy, the Koninklijke Militaire Kapel Johan Willem Friso is the army band and this orchestra is connected to the Royal Dutch Airforce. Up until the 90s we still had conscription and then there were even more orchestras. I was part of one of the last few cohorts of people who had to fulfill their military duty and was lucky (as an amateur drummer) to fullfill while playing for the Trumpet Corps of the Johan Willem Friso Kapel as a military drummer. It required a bare minimum (and it was really very very minimum) of military training but lots of music and drill rehearsals but as an active musician it was probably the best year of my life. My snare drum technique was probably at the highest level ever despite the music was pretty simple. But I brought in lots of charts and pieces which we rehearsed just for fun and eventually we had a drumline that could really perform some of it and we incorporated one of those pieces in our standard repertoire which was fun. Because the Trumpet Corps And Drums was attached to a fulltime military orchestra we got to do some extra special things like playing at Prinsjesdag (opening of the Parlementary Year by the King), went on 2 trips abroad (Denmark and Poland) and performed at several military tattoos (big military music shows which attract thousands of people every night).

The founder of Nightwish, Tuomas Holopainen, completed his conscript service in the Finnish army playing the clarinet in the military band.
