It isn't the collecting that kills it for people. It is having to go back to the barrel and swap kongs to collect certain things. It can get frustrating at times, the game would be helped feel less tedious if this wasn't the case or you could switch kongs on the fly
When in need to play as a specific Kong, once press of a button and the desired Kong that you are closest too, you will then take control of. As for Kong specific areas, only that Kong will enter as the others stay behind until you regroup with them! 😊
@kazaloolovesgames Good for you, we're talking about general populations nowadays. He's saying we didn't have a bunch of hate mongering stemming from Speedrunners trying to collect 100% of the items in a game that added those items for variety and being able to pick and choose how you progressed.
I used to think this game was a cherished classic right alongside Mario 64, Banjo, and Ocarina of Time. I was genuinely shocked when I watched my first negative review of DK64 around 2010. And it seems the rest of the decade nobody had anything nice to say about the game. I’m glad that there are still plenty of folks who still adore the game.
It’s right up there for me, I’ve beaten this game many times and played shit out of it as a kid. Ocarina, Mario 64, Smash Bros, Goldeneye, Majoras Mask, DK64 reigned supreme above all other N64 games I played as a kid.
"There's too many collectibles!!" they cry as they mindlessly consume every Ubisoft game packed to the gills with collectibles and map icons to check off...
Collecting stuff is fine. It's the amount of work it takes becomes tedious. Yes, even in Ubisoft games. The main issue was running into a collectable, being unable to collect it... So you run to a switch barrel, run back, and then collect it... Only to find a new blockage/collectable that requires switching. Tbh I recently played the DK64 with the Kong swap mod, and it's actually really enjoyable. So it is less about the collectables and more about the backtracking.
@@benvictim it didn't feel like work at all. Me and my sister both played it and we'd save our progress. Sometimes we'd just play through levels and had fun. We played DK64 for hours. Good times.
This game got done so dirty. It's totally a victim of mob mentality. Folks thoughtlessly complaining about the game as though they're all hardcore completionists who always 100% all of their games. It's just a fun, good, game. It's not a freaking project. Honestly, the amount of dogpiling this game has gone through reminds me of back in the day when RUclipsrs realized they couldn't keep making videos about how bad Sonic 06 was, so they switched to retroactively hating every Sonic game ever and peeps just kinda agreed with them without really thinking.
@@Topgun5t It does suck ass to 100% complete. That's why, if you wanna just enjoy the game, don't do that. Imagine thinking Dark Souls sucked ass cuz you put some self-imposed challenge to only use the broken straight sword.
while DK64 did have some issue, overall I will say I enjoyed it. Dk64 is not nearly as bad as jet force gemini (another of rares Collectathons) that of which you did need to near 100% complete to beat
Nooooope. This game has some decent stuff in it and can be fun at times, but the needless backtracking with every character is incredibly annoying. Also the controls can be pretty clumsy at times. Not the worst game ever made, but it is rightly lambasted even us maybe people go overboard at times.
But it DID kill a genre- considering how terrible of a game it is! DK64 singlehandedly killed off the 3D collect-a-thon platformer genre- which only made a resurgence in recent years thanks to MUCH better games like A Hat In Time, Yooka-Laylee, and ESPECIALLY Super Mario Odyssey- which is one of the greatest games ever made!
@@BigAlvideos101 To sum up: “Yuh-huh, it WAS bad because it was terrible. Also, Yooka-Laylee was good because reasons.” Look, it’s fine if you don’t like it. If you’re going to blame the decline of a genre on it, you have to try to make some kind of actual point about it.
DK64 got high review scores and very positive perception back in its time and is mostly hated only in retrospect. I don't see how a game that was loved at the time could have caused the death of its genre.
Cost Because of a game breaking glitch rare was forced to pack in expansion packs With every copy of the game which costs them a fortune Though I think the idea that this killed that genre is fundamentally false I don't think it did I think it just happened to be one of the tail end games of a genre that started to become obsolete as technology improved and created superior formats such as shooters both first person and third person collective funds were basically made because game creators couldn't think of good ways to make 3D worlds compelling without using the idea of collecting items as the core of the gameplay What was superior hardware from the next generation More complex and larger games were able to be built that no longer required collection Of trinkets
@@yami122The game breaking bug theory has been proven false. Apparently, it was due to the game's lighting effects just needing an extra 4mb of memory for the system to process them (which given how dynamic it is, makes this idea a lot more plausible). But ,the game definitely wasn't the 'killer of collectithons' people assume it was; there were still quite a few games of the type selling rather well into the 2000's. It was just the natural evolution of 3D generating more ideas and possibilities
@@Dead_Metal Fun fact. The current proved theory is, that on first entry of a level, all "dynamic" lights will baked in this extra 4mb. So it will be explained, how its possible, that this game has so many lights sometime at constant framerate
Well rare was basically the only developing studio that even really did this kind of collectathon. With them being bought by microsoft and their new standards and target audience the genre had literally no chance... Nuts and Bolts summed it up perfectly. "kids nowadays don't want to collect a ton of stuff, they just want to shoot stuff" and that's basically why the genre really died. Microsoft did not like this type of game or they thought their audience wouldn't like it.
To b fair that's kind of it's own issue. You only need about half in the game, which almost feels like a "beginner's trap" If a kid playing felt he did need ot get as much as possible and got as much but still wanted to get to see K Rool and stuff, he could almost feel like his time was wasted near the end. Honestly I think they just needed to bump up the requirements a little more, like 75%. Banjo Kazooie, Tooie, and Grunty's Revenge have pretty good ratios.
I'm 38 and I bought this game the moment it came out. Considering it came with the $30 expansion pack it was the most incredible bargain ever. It took me like 40 hours to 100% it.
Not a single lie in this video. DK64 was not made at a time where players (outside of a very tiny minority) were expected to 100% a game. There are a million things to do in the game because it gives you an abundance of choice. As a game primarily for kids that is GOOD.
True but thing is is that new players aren't going to know That they don't need to 100 percent the game And its contemporaries of the time had top people that it's a good thing to seek 100 percent Banjo Kazooie in particular Required almost all of its puzzle pieces and notes To really beat the game Sure the hardest door and puzzle to complete are technically optional but you need that double health to beat the boss unless you have God like skills you can miss two Jigsaw pieces and about 20 or 40 notes And because of that most people are going to automatically assume that there's a similar reason to collect the things in Bandra Kazooie And Collectathons Tend to be fundamentally different than most other game genres in that 100 percenting collection this makes more sense because the games are about collecting things so people are going to want to collect all the things because that's all of the game play
@yami122 Hard disagree that new players don't know that they won't likely get 100%. As someone who remembers when DK64 came out, no one EVER assumed that getting 100% was necessary to win. Mario 64 didn't require 100% stars to win. And the game itself makes it very clear immediately you never need 100% anything to progress the game.
@@davidandersson7642 since collection is the fundamental core of any collection any collective thong In which the fundamental act of collecting things is so unfun that players are aiming for the minimum needed to beat the game that's a problem
Absolutely agree with this comment group, Beaver Bother, Big Bug, the Beetle Races, and the Rabbit Races. Absolutely freaking HATE these bananas, but I love the game so much that I actually burned out the cartridge last year. Recently swapped to an emulator and patched the ROM with Tag Anywhere.
Beaver Bother only becomes a problem in Creepy Castle because you have to beat it twice (with Chunky and with Lanky), and the beaver count is set at the highest unlike in other levels. I don't bother being bothered by Beaver Bother at all until I get to that level!
Well, there is more nuance to the discussion than that. It needs to be fun to actually collect the collectibles. What baffles me is that people lambast Donkey Kong 64 and then praise Super Mario Odyssey as if the latter actually has fun collectibles to obtain. (a few are, but 90% are legitimately just sitting in the open, require you to sit next to someone, require you to kick a rock, or some other mundane task that gets obfuscated by the game's fun basic movement mechanics)
If you could just switch kongs with the d-pad there'd be no complaints. There aren't even that many collectibles but the tag barrel is a complete pace breaker.
Having to interrupt gameplay to find a barrel to switch from DK to Diddy to collect red bananas even though they're right in front of the player gets annoying real fast. It's fine to have those colored nanners as a suggestion for what character I should use in the area, especially taking in consideration their moveset and abilities, but DK64 forces your hand to play a certain way instead of getting experimental. It doesn't let the player make own mistakes playing the wrong kong, nor does it have a rewarding feeling when you do overcome the challenge you placed upon yourself. That's why DK64 is hated.
It’s just mob mentality. Similarly to Doom 3 , it was loved until a RUclipsr made a video crapping on it and impressionable people took up pitchforks and started hating on it then it spreads like wildfire
I love Doom 3, but you're kidding yourself if you think what you said is true. Doom 3 has been a highly divisive game since its release 20 years ago. The hate for Doom 3 pre-dates RUclips itself.
I don't know about that, I came to the conclusion that DK64 was flawed on my own, I've gotten more critical over the years. I like a lot of aspects of the game, but I would never call it the definitive Donkey Kong game. I still want a new 3D Donkey Kong game, I just don't want it to be a repeat of DK64.
I'm so glad a lot of recent videos about DK64 are finally defending it. I've always loved this game ever since I got it for Christmas in 1999. I've also always thought the statement that this "killed 3d platformers" was so stupid when Rare literally released 2 more 3D platformers on the n64 after this and in the next generation of consoles you couldn't walk two steps without seeing a 3d platformer with the only thing that changed was there were less collectables and the only reason for that is because DK 64 had 5 fully playable characters that weren't restricted to a small section of the game.
Yeah the statement that dk64 killed collectons is objectively wrong. Dozens came out after it, some of which where great games too. Like any trend it got over saturated and people got bored of it.
If it killed 3D platofrmers then how did these games still get made? Banjo-Tooie (2000) Spyro 3: Year of The Dragon (2000) Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy (2001) Ty The Tasmanian Tiger (2002) Super Mario Sunshine (2002) Super Mario Galaxy (2007) Super Mario Galaxy 2 (2010) Super Mario Oddysey (2017) Yooka-Laylee (2017) A Hat in Time (2017) Astrobot (2024)

We took turns passing off the controller trying to discover more collectibles and completing the toughest of challenges together! Awesome video! I love that this game is getting more and more praise! I'll be releasing a Donkey Kong December series this Dec, all on DK64. If anyone has love for this game, this series is for you! :)
All anyone I've ever heard in real life say about this game is how great it was. When I first heard about all the hate I was like "what? Who hates this game?" I admit I see the flaws, I get the criticism but I don't care it's still one of my favorites.
I think it's those people who obsess over 100% completion who don't like this game. As kids we would just skip what we couldn't beat and get as far as we could. I feel like adults (or teens) who played this game for the first time focused too much on getting everything. Also for some reason I've found people hate that they have to beat Donkey Kong in one life. To me if you can't beat the og Donkey Kong in one try you shouldn't expect to beat any of its sequels.
Yeah I had never heard anyone hate it until RUclipsrs that last few years. Think it’s probably bandwagon followers. I’ve only know a handful of people who have actually played dk64 but they all loved it. Personally Ive never found getting 100% that bad, and I don’t understand the constant complaints about backtracking I see these days. When is it back tracking vs deliberately game design? Metroidvainas never get grief about it. it is a core design of Dk64, going back to areas with new kongs or abilities to unlock more stuff. There are a lot worse games for getting 100% than it as well. Original windwaker is one example off the top of my head. I did it, but it’s the only Zelda game I beat once, because it was annoying to complete everything. My only real complaint about dk64 is some of the mini games get repetitive, and some of the lanky races are hard to do on modern tvs.
Jetpack wasn’t too bad, but that arcade coin was ridiculous. That game was the last Golden banana that I found 😆. I literally 101%ed the game as soon as I beat it for the first time😆
@@TheSuicune7 I felt like a champion when I finally got the Rareware coin as a kid. Like I had done something unachievable. I have yet to beat DK’84 without savestates. 😅
I've been playing DK64 and I've loved it for a long time. As a programmer, I want to eventually create a spiritual successor with different characters (e.g. a hedgehog knight and badger thief). The low points of the game were definitely a problem for almost everyone, and I hope to fix them with my spiritual successor.
As a fellow programmer (well future programmer in 2nd year of school now) and a dk64 fan I wish you the best of luck! I’d play your game based on the description.
I think the only word of advice I'd have is to not have as many characters. Or find a more creative solution than simply swapping characters on the fly (I feel the inevitable follow-up to that is to just give all of those abilities to one character). But I lean the former since DK64's issues likely wouldn't have been so severe if there weren't so many characters all of the collectibles were split across. It probably could've gotten away with three. Or have five characters but don't make them exclusive to ONE character (i.e. allow Diddy OR Tiny to grab certain golden bananas). Or......... well, anyway. lol
What a lot of people fail to remember is this game was released at a time where most people didn’t have many games. You could sink dozens if hours into this, and while there are some VERY frustrating parts, you don’t have to complete them. I completed the game for the first time with just enough bananas to get into hideout helm. For a kid, a game this bit was mind blowing, and it’s still impressive today. Maybe we just shouldn’t be trying to speedrun to 101% completion.
@EddieSpaghetti69 "Why are there so many Korok Seeds only to give me a golden turd as a reward?" Because collecting all of them was never the point. The point was for you to encounter enough of them to get everything you needed from them. Once you had fully expanded your inventory, there's nothing else that the Korok Seeds are used for. Get the rest of them if you want, but it's not productive. Same idea here. Not every colored banana, golden banana, or banana coin is necessary to get all you need from the game. They're overstocked on purpose to make it so you don't /have/ to get everything to beat the game.
@@MarioMonte13 I've already answered this a dozen times. I'm fine with the *number and required ratio of collectibles* what I have hatred for is the minigame collection which is required to complete the game; specifically the Jetpack and Classic DK coins. I'd be fine if it *wasn't required* to beat the game; but the minigames felt like *mario party one* and many of those *never* returned. That's what I mean when I mention many people "didn't beat the game" because *I would bet they did not.*
@@EddieSpaghetti69 you can get into hideout helm with only 100 bananas. This means you could only get the bananas from the first 3 worlds minus the Diddy jetpack one in Angry Aztecs, plus another 25 bananas from anywhere, 26 if you don’t want to do beaver bother in frantic factory. You start with one, so that makes an even hundred. The only truly frustrating part that is required is the jetpack segment in Hideout Helm.
I picked this game up in the 2020s for the first time and I actually enjoyed it. I came in with no nostalgia for Rare and tried this, Diddy Kong Racing, and Banjo. I preferred DK64 to Banjo, which is sacriledge to say online.
How to fix the biggest problems of the game. Allow the tag barrels to warp to one another, most areas with warp pads had a tag barrel near them already. Allow players to change Kongs without the tag barrel. Increase the number of mini games, there are way too many repeats. Most of the enemies are kind of pointless and lack variety. There also needed to be something more for each character, i feel more areas should've centered around a specific Kong, Kreepy Kastle is the level that does that the best The Nintendo coin also prevented me from beating the game as a kid.
I love the idea of the tag barrel warp, although it could be a lot since there are so many of them. I've never understood why the tag barrels are a problem though. I recently rebeat the game after hearing all the negative comments, and it didn't feel bad at all. There are tag barrels everywhere, and in the main areas with multiple golden bananas for the kongs, there is usually a tag barrel right in the center of the action. Do you remember which areas/bananas were the worst for you when it comes to switching kongs?
@@PrinceDman the warps would be relegated to each map, obviously, to cut down on the massive list that are in the game. And it's less about the tag barrel being nearby and more I have to constantly keep running back and forth to it especially if there's multiple items for different kongs. The most egregious level would be the water level, which is broken up into mainly 2 areas. The light house and the sunken ship, both areas are extremely large in size with few tag barrels so you're constantly running to and from the tag barrels. Every level has at least one of these areas except for the castle which is the only level to have a layout that doesn't constantly have you running back and forth repeatedly
@@osets2117 Yeah, I was assuming so, but still could be a lot (some levels have like 20+ tag barrels). Possibly unlock warp teleporting after beating the level's boss? That way you could at least dematerialize the Troff n Scoff areas resulting in less tag barrels (or just as a fun reward). Agreed, the water level just feels atrocious to play lol. Assuming you are using the correct Kong, navigating the level still isn't satisfying.
Switching on the fly destroys the structure of the game entirely. If you don't want to explore the level as that kong...then don't. You probably don't need to. But I would also question why you're even playing a game like this if you didn't want to explore. Each kong approaches everything differently. It was fun to explore as them all. I never see anyone complain about Banjo and Kazooie splitting in Tooie, that's a fun mechanic too. It made you think differently for a lot of things because they had different mobility options. That's just all of DK64. And it's fantastic.
Strong disagree. The worlds and big enough that Tag Anywhere does not limit exploration. The biggest problem with Tag Barrels is that it basically forces backtracking. For example, there's a single platform in Gloomy Galleon with a Purple Balloon, Red Kasplat, and Triangle Pad, so three Kongs. It basically requires you to go to that spot with a Kong, then go to a barrel, then go back, then do that all one more time. and there's a lot of those in the game. That doesn't add exploration or enjoyment, just extra work. As for why people don't complain about people complaining about Tooie's splitting, not only is it just TWO characters, and not five, but it'sas you said it IS a lot more about their different movment. There are literally platforms and gaps Banjo can't cross but Kazooie can. Meanwhile aside from Diddy's Rocketbareel, there's really no major mobility changes, very subtle and doesn't add much. Despite the rap saying Chunky can't jump high, it never comes up ever. And last point, I'm guessing it's unintentional, It's kinda dismissive and rude to just say "this added feature kills the game." A lot of talented people worked hard to get Tag Anywhere going, they weren't paid and they aren't charging money for it, and yet it work sand people enjoy it way more. So clearly it doesn't destroy the game for them.
Grant Kirkhope’s ost here is one of his best. DK Island’s main theme, Jungle Japes’ extension of the classic swing, Angry Aztec, Frantic Factory, Fungi Forest, pretty much every boss remix, dude was cooking.
The race with the dung beetle got to be very frustrating he takes three banana coins every time you bump into him Then by accident I missed the speed barrel, jumped past it I happened to push the B button and was able to punch him back! He let out a whimper and bounced then all frustration gone into laughter! There’s just so much charm, for instance, watching each Kongs idol, animation, or walking very slowly with lanky Kong with his arms up in the air 😂 I love this game. It still has its difficult moments, but after finding my own technique to beat Beaver bother it’s no longer my most hated mini game. Finding the secret ending with the 201 bananas was always the topping on the cake. Still love the game but been harder to find the time to play it. Yeah, I own two Nintendo 64 copies including my original from 1999 and a copy on the Nintendo WiiU.
Its crazy how much easier it is replaying the game as an adult. I remember racing those beetles dozens of times as a kid lol. Now after finally replaying the game after plenty of years, it only took a couple tries to beat them.
Still think it was a huge missed opportunity to not make this the N64's answer to Crash Bandicoot. Not only would it have rounded out the lineup but the final product would've felt closer to the masterclass snes trilogy.
Honestly one of the biggest gripes with DK64 playing it again is the fact that you can only swap out your characters at set locations (the floating barrel thing). If they were to ever remake it, I feel like something they'd _have_ to allow for is swapping out Kongs on the fly. There would certainly have to be restricted areas where this isn't allowed pending on the context, but it would outright solve the main issue of feeling like you have to backtrack constantly just to swap your Kong out for the "right" one (eg: to collect certain colored bananas, shoot a certain lock, do certain challenges, etc) while still giving the player an impetus to use the different Kongs' movesets.
The only thing that bothered me with DK64 was getting that pesky Nintendo Coin. I completely missed it on my first playthrough, and when I got to the end of Hideout Helm and realized I needed it, I groaned (I thought it was an optional secret item when I read the manual, and I didn't know where it was without a guide!). But honestly, that's the only time the game really got on my nerves. I enjoyed it, overall. (And yes, Beaver Bother is not well-coded, but i discovered a trick that worked fairly consistently, so it didn't get to me in the end)
What Rare didn't realize was adding an absurd amount of collectibles actually made this game wonderful as a randomizer mod. Now that you've beaten this game, go play the randomizer. Seriously it never gets old now, even when all that happens is the items and upgrades get shuffled. it's cool to see how much in the late game levels you can still get even without basic early game abilities. And ice traps too lol.
Who doesn't like DK64? It's a delight. All my friends remember it fondly. The only way I can think of why someone wouldn't like it is because it has too many collectables and if you're trying 100% it I could see it being frustrating. But I advise you don't do that and just casually play it getting what you can.
As someone who recently replayed dk64 specifically to get 101%, it def starts to drag on, but i literally have never had a more satisfying feeling than slowly watching that % climb lol
the only people who don't watch certain channels I won't name and take their word as law. or dumbass kids who aren't supposed to be on youtube. difference doesn't matter they're the same type of stupid in the end.
Never understood the hate this game gets the last 10 years.. (which is btw a trend for older games nowadays... And the hate is new because I can still vividly remember when it released back in 99 that its was beloved by almost everyone) Its a great game that I love(d) very much and its still a blast to play. And yes I 100% it back then.. All bananas, the full 101% completion.. Even al coins and coloured bananas.. And unlocked the secret casting movie at the end.. Do NOT skip this because its a trend to "hate" it. If you love the old school 3d collectathons like Banjo Kazooie and Super Mario 64 and really miss those.. *play this game* !
Oh no this game is really hated by the community it's got the singular problem of having to switch characters constantly to activate stuff which means you're going through each room up to five times oftentimes less than that it's usually around three And there's just too many collectibles each world has 100 bananas for each of the five kongs so that's 500 in each world and the problem is is that these bananas can only be collected if you're that correct Monkey so lot of backtracking then there's 10 golden bananas for each monkey for 50 in each world And unfortunately because there's so many of these the actual act of acquiring the golden bananas is often times repetitive as you'll often times enter a bonus game barrel for one but there's only like 5 or 6 different mini games so they keep getting replayed and quite a few of them are just not good particularly the fly swatting the sled race and the worst one of all the very glitchy beaver hurting where you try to get them into a hole however they don't want to go in the hole it's glitched where they'll just kind of cling to the side nobody has ever figured out a consistent way to get them into the hole every time so a lot of trial and error Ohh and then of course there's coins for each kong to purchase moves and weapons there's one blueprint for each monkey in each world And unfortunately the first two worlds cannot be 100 percented on your first time through scents you get the final two monkeys in the third world which means you have to backtrack to those worlds there's actually a mod for this game that fans created that let's you switch monkeys at any point oh I forgot to mention also that you can only switch monkeys usually at certain designated points but moderates made it so you can just change them at any time which makes the game so much more fun
Nah, it's hated, and for kinda dumb reasons in my opinion. People mainly don't like this game cuz there are too many collectibles, it's a pain to 100% complete. It's almost like listening to news sites all copying each others arguments at this point, totally unaware of a very easy solution to the problem. That solution being. . . just don't 100% the game.

@@yami122 Basically all your points fall apart because, like Skyrim and Grand Theft Auto, getting 100% completion is optional in this game too. Wanna compare it to its contemporaries? Okay. You don't really have to 100% complete those games either, and in fact, lots of people play them that way and love them all the same. Somehow, DK64 though has this expectation that you'll be 100%ing it, even though that's so far from what you need to do to have fun. It's irritating to have to travel through the hallways three to five times to get everything. . . so just don't. All that's in those hallways are stray bananas and you don't need them all to get the banana medals. Not to say it's NEVER a problem. As this video so perfectly pointed out that sometimes they have those crappy hallways that require two characters to even get through. Fact is though, those kinds of rooms are kinda uncommon. There's noticing the same flaws, and then there's having the exact same reaction to those flaws. That's what gives me the impression of folks just parroting what other people have said. Why, one of my best friends once said all the exact same complaints you stated. One problem. This particular friend hardly ever goes for 100% on any platformer game. It's not a genre he's super fond of, so he just plays until it's not fun, or until he beats the game. So why would he care that this game is hard to 100%? Because somebody told him to care about that. Sadly, that's how a lot of people operate, you know. They listen to folks they deem to be of higher standing than them. I can understand speedrunners or true completionist types having their issues. Statistically speaking though, those people are not the majority, so it makes very little sense for their concerns to apply to the general gaming audience. Lastly, don't wanna use a walkthrough? Okay, just don't use a walkthrough. Don't bother with 100%. So you see, almost all grievances are easily resolved by simply not playing the game like a tryhard. Relax and have fun with it. Don't treat it like a school project. I get hat it's fun to do that for some games. Nothing gives a dopamine rush quite like seeing a checklist with all the boxes checked off thanks to your efforts. At the end of the day though, not all games are meant for that, like you pointed out. If you were playing Skyrim and hated the game cuz it's a pain to complete 100%, everybody would say that's on you. I'm just saying to extend that same courtesy to other games, even when out first instinct tells us not to extend that courtesy.
Back when I first played DK 64, I never had an issue with the Collectibles. That's what was going into this game for. The only issue I ever had is that in order to complete the game you have to beat original Donkey Kong not just once, but again with a higher difficulty setting. Aside from that, and some of the more annoying minigames, the game was fine. Still would rather play Banjo-Kazooie though.
I didn't mind getting everything as this along with Banjo-Kazooie, Paper Mario and Rayman 2 were the games I grew up with as a kid. However, if you haven't heard or seen it, we are able to play the Donkey Kong 64 Randomizer on the Emulator. So many settings to choose from with how you want to play the game, adjust the amount of collectibles or randomize the amount to get in the playthrough and one of the best settings to use? Being able to tag anywhere without a tag barrel! I feel as though if the developers (Rare) had given us the option of using tag anywhere without using the barrels other than for fully healing, we all would've had a more tolerable experience playing the game growing up.
People think it's bad because they actually played it. I did. I think it was shit. I never completed it. Too much. Which is saying something for a 10 year old. Ended up trading it and keeping the memory upgrade for Majora's Mask and Perfect Dark. Actually good games. It is widely regarded as one of the worst N64 games ever. Basically the opposite of the OOT legacy. It killed platformer collection games.
@@darkhobo Dude, I played it too and reached the opposite conclusion. I think it's great. The music is fitting, the level design is competent, it pushed the limits of the N64 (as most RARE games did), and it gives you a lot of content to keep you entertained for hours. I don't understand this "It killed a genre" argument. Super Mario Sunshine was also a platform collector and it came out three years later. The Rachet & Clank series has platform collecting mechanics and it does well. It looks more like platform collecting mechanics are still around and that DEDICATED platform collecting games simply fell out of fashion around the turn of the millennium.
@@darkhobo "Too much" is understandable but keep in mind that it's a collectathon game, it was a very popular genre back in the day. I've never heard of DK64 being "Widely regarded as one of the worst N64 games ever". When I look up DK64's rating on google, the ratings are pretty high across multiple websites (IMBD, NintendoLife, IGN, Metacritic, Google's own rating, etc). Where the source of your claim and how far did you get in the game?
There were so many collectables and other things to do, because modern gamers forget… DLC AND ONLINE GAMING WASN’T A THING YET… you couldn’t add more to it later, or patch issues. It had to be a fully functioning, ready to go product right out the gate… It also had to entertain people for a long time to stay relevant. If it was over too quickly, nobody would play it
@@Birthnote I played DK64 first as a kid so I always felt BK was a rip off of DK64. DK64 is like BK on crack more characters, bigger levels, even more collectibles.
Honestly, you’re right about it the DK arcade game. Having one life to get through every level is brutal. It is a very difficult game for a child. I remember my brother and I begged our dad to try after we found out the coin was there.
This is a great game. I challenge anyone to find a game from the mid 90'es that doesn't have massive flaws. But people overlook those readily, because they do so many things right. DK64 also does a lot of things right. The characters and their world are charming. The music is amazing. The movement feels much more refined than most 3D platformers of the era (if a bit hindered by the camera). The level design is top tier. Really, only a few things should have been fixed to make this game have a much more positive legacy. Fix the placement of colored bananas (so much backtracking is caused by these being in wierd places). Make Beaver Bother have functional hitboxes. Fix Diddy's flying physics, and make some of the races more forgiving. I would love for Nintendo to make a modern 3D platformer for DK, built on the ideas in this game, but refined with the lessons learned since.
"I challenge anyone to find a game from the mid 90'es that doesn't have massive flaws. But people overlook those readily, because they do so many things right." Hell, do the opposite and find a more modern game that has more good qualities than bad. They certainly exist, I'm not saying they don't (my favorite this year is an indie called Nine Sols), but most games that come out these days are slop with no creative vision. People cherry-pick examples like Forspoken and Concord, but the current bar really isn't much higher than that. DK64 is way better than most modern games.
I did 100% this game as a kid. It was great. This and the first Banjo Kazooie where masterpieces of their time and it does make me sad hearing so many people hating on it. They don't make games like these anymore and they should be treasured.
The DK barrel is a problem, but there is a way to make it less of a hassle. If they just tied Kong Selection to the dpad instead, a ton of the really annoying parts just go away. Just prevent the switches if you're in a 1 kong exclusive area.
You can't use the D-pad on a N64 controller (unless you're a mutant with a third hand). But I get your point, a button to change character would have been better than the barrel.
Same feelings about Banjo Tooie. When people complain about them it just sounds like “I’m a toddler who just wants to mash buttons and see flashy colors”
A reminder that the issue with DK 64's collectibles is that it's tedious. By all accounts, I'd welcome them. But it's clear the structure involving them sucks a lot. Like, the Kong-specific collectibles are fine, but they should NEVER be put in a way that makes you go, "Come on. I have to go back here as another Kong?" Like, you're not experiencing a whole new adventure. You're just returning with someone else to do the job. Like, an instant character switch or the levels being designed so that specific collectibles are only put in the Kong-specific locations would be a better choice in comparison. And the times the Kong-specific collectibles are placed together is merely to guide the player where to go. Also, people hated DK 64? I thought people revered DK 64.
I just want a fixed version where you can collect any colour coded items with any kong and if you hit a face or fruit switch it works with any kong but it also swaps you to that kong as well
I wouldnt say fixed. Backtracking and seeing things youll need a tool or character to get through the game is part of its identity. Same way the first few sonic games encouraged multiple play throughs to learn the levels and gain speed. It was intentional and ok that you couldn't boost through each level the first time you are there.
I think it would have helped a lot if the game was designed from the outset with the idea that any Kong can collect any item, but certain locations can only be accessed by certain Kongs. This saves on replaying the same area with different Kongs in order to get their unique collectables, but still forces you to play as each Kong in order to access the whole level. Like, you can think of it to being similar to how certain stars in Mario 64 require the Winged Cap, or Vanish Cap, or Metal Cap, and that's the analogue to requiring different Kongs. That said, the different caps weren't used as much in Mario 64. DK 64 would need tighter level design with fewer areas accessible to any Kong and more areas only accessible to certain Kongs.
It always makes me a bit sad when people cant distinguish between "i love it" and "its good/great." Those two things are not related and dont influence each other. You can love total shit and you can hate great products. Objectively speaking, DK64 is massively flawed but still has strong points and its a pretty decent game, especially for its time. Its not the piece of trash it is made out to be. Absolutely not. Its a decent game. But no matter how much people love it, it will never be a GREAT GAME. Its just not.
@ yes there is. The quality can be objectively judged. Your Personal enjoyment with it can not. Did i enjoy shitty games before? For sure. Can i face the fact that they are trash regardless? Yes.
@ no its not. Anything can be fun. You can massively enjoy riding a shitty bicycle/car but its still of low quality. Same with games. A game can easily be objectively judged by breaking down its individual parts.
first of all, great video !! second of all, i completely agree, while yes this game has plenty of flaws, that doesn’t mean it isn’t a GOOD game, it has soooooo much heart and character and unless you’re going for a fully completed run it’s honestly not that bad other than some mini games and arcade stuff, and even then, i appreciated the length of the game as a kid SO much due to how when i was young my family couldn’t afford that many games, so the longer the game the better, and it being huge helped entertain me for way longer since i didn’t complete everything instantly and have to move on immediately, this is easily in my top 10 favorite games personally, regardless of the hate it gets, i’ll praise this game till i die, one of the most charming games ever
I love this Game to death. The King K. Rool Bossfight is to this day one of my fav. Bossfights. I still cry from laughter, when you falls back when Tiny shoots into his toes :D
This was a gem for sure. I was 5 in 2002 and remember my dad got the cartridge. We couldn't play it without the expansion pak. And I was devastated. Days later. My dad got the pak. And I member the euphoric feeling of finally being able to play it!.
"this game is great" two seconds later: "its mostly nostalgia, dont play this game you wont like it" ya know usually it takes at least a few minutes for one of these "defending dk64" videos to undermine itself, but thats gotta be a new record, BRAVO
Yeah it's a weird thing to say in a video trying to defend DK64's merits. If the game is only good if you're nostalgic for it, to the point where you're telling new players to not play it... maybe the game isn't that good?
@@Animeruler95 That's valid, but that alone is not enough of an argument to convince anyone that the game is good. I too love DK64, but I acknowledge the game's many shortcomings. Calling it a "good game" is a huge stretch.
@@Wahaller I argue that this is a good game, not perfect but still good, I think the problem is that people go in expecting to collect every little thing or play through every mini game but in reality you don't have too, you can still the beat the game without collecting everything, so I were to introduce new players to this game, I would say that "100% this game is an option but not an necessity."
I think there is only two problems with this game, the scarcity of tag barrels and lack of extra animal buddies that characterised earlier entries. A few more barrels added at the right locations would cut excessive backtracking so it's more exploration and planning than a chore to work around and I would have liked each Kong to have a buddy to work with. It all adds up when there's five Kongs to get to know and fiddle with. Outside that I think to this day it's a great game.
Wrong. ... Donkey Kong 64 is an okay videogame. It has a lot of flaws but a lot of good points too. You seem to genuinely like it but beware of overcorrecting.
Agreed. This has Sonic Adventure 2: Battle written all over it. *Why?* Same issue with that game. Everyone remembers going fast as shadow and sonic, ripping up the highway and *"going fast"* but neglect to remember *any* of the eggman stages or digging for emeralds for *hours* because the game thought suddenly swapping genres was a *freakin' neato idea.* I hate DK64 because of the minigames, none of them are *good* and come off as a haphazard way to extend playtime. Same thing with SA2B. We all remember the chao garden and the firefly boss with Clunky; nobody remembers the stupid arcade game which you have to be *great* at to even attempt the end boss. If it was *optional* say, maybe giving the kongs access to their barrel abilities instead of *relying* on them like a freakin' crutch at the end I'd *consider* it instead of being *forced* into it. Making me have to play a game that was concieved when *I was a spermatozoa* doesn't make your new game good; it makes them both look like crap. If i wanted minigames I'd play freaking Mario Party *One* instead.
@@EddieSpaghetti69 none of them are good but not all of them are bad either, though there were minigames in the 64 Zelda titles and Banjo as well. They were just less frequent and purely optional, working more as a fun momentary distraction. I played that Donkey Kong arcade cabinet a lot when playing DK64. When I got the coin I thought it was just a cool little badge of honor, then you get to that door and I realized I had to beat the jetpack game too. I had the reverse problem OP had. I sucked at that one, but HAD to beat it to progress. It was BS. Sounds like Sonic Adventure 2 has the opposite issue to Donkey Kong 64, both are more kind of okay but the former's tedious minigames are overlooked and and the later's are hyper focused on.
@@girlbuu9403 Lol, I had got the Jetpack token easily assuming it was for a bonus or secret. I was mistaken. Neither are good games, neither are terrible games. Neglecting all the good puts you in the "Ooga booga game bad." camp; while fixating on the good makes you in the "ooga booga game gud." camp. The player base has the same issues for both SA2B and DK64; which while small should be noted that *they have the same mentality.* I'm not saying *Finkle is Einhorn* but I'm suggesting that Finkle *is likely* Einhorn, if you get my ancient reference.
I think you would love the randomizer of this game. Kongs and moves can be shuffled in with golden bananas and various other collectibles. Though that means there's a chance that a Kong or important move could be locked behind a Beaver Bother barrel or the Donkey Kong arcade game depending on your settings. :p
I really enjoyed Dk64 as a child and wasn't aware of its "flaws" until I was an adult hearing other people complain about it. I think its really cool for the time especially.
Yeah, there's a reason the hate and criticism only started more recently, and that's because the way people play games has changed. So many people these days literally have never just played a game for fun. Instead they have a 100% walkthrough and a checklist beside them from the moment they start, so it's more like a job. Gee I wonder why they don't enjoy games... Lol
I have such special memories surrounding this game. For kids and families back in the day you didn't get a ton of video games so you wanted them to be meaty and substantial, and here was a game that was DEFINITELY meaty and substantial! Just being able to play as so many characters in environments that felt alive with things to do, not to mention the beautiful colors and music, I loved it just as much back then as Banjo-Kazooie, even though I see which is the better-designed game now. Most critics at the time quite liked DK64 as well, it's only in recent decades as the trends in game design have changed that audience perception has changed too. But playing it with the mentality of the times it was made in, DK64 is still such a good game. Thanks for giving it its just due.
I think this game has aged so well. In the age of open world games, DK 64's collectibles aren't nearly as bloated feeling as some modern AAA games, including something like Arkham Knight. Each character feels fresh and although the game play loop is the same: get golden bananas, fight bosses, etc. It's still a ton of fun. Not to mention the randomizer community, this game is perfect for randomized speed runs.
Your dynamic with your sisters is the exact same between me, my brother and sister 💀 reminiscing on memories while roasting each other and spewing insults lolol
Beating the game as an adult was one of the most gratifying things ive ever done in my history of gaming. Never beat it as a kid 13 years later returned to my original cartridge and finally finished it. Only great memories
I love this game since 25 years! And i never pretend to dislike it, its so crazy good! I love it all, the backtracking, the different kongs. My favourite is btw Lanky! He is so goofy and his long arms are so funny. And his voice sample! "Hoppla!" and this ones, when he walk at his hands. Oh man, such a great time with the game. I have finished it 2018 finally and collect after it the last colored banana! It was a blue baloon at a waterfall!
I've recently been under the suspicion that dk64 was a casual game, so people saying it's bad are trying to speed run a game the developers were like "who wants to go pick bananas on an island?"
I think it is a very important game in video game history because of the excessive collecting. It was the game that showed us that bigger and more isnt always better. It answered the question of "can a 3d playformer have TOO MUCH collecting?". At the end of the day it is just a game that is much more fun to beat than it is to 100% complete, and that doesn't make a game horrible.
Lanky Kong is the best, and no I will not brook any arguments. He's the most versatile, the most charming and charismatic, and the most powerful overall pick.
I think the part that soured a lot of people is that, they all never beat it... You either got stuck on several of the harder bananas, or had no clue where the coins where. Even if you only need about 50% of the collectibles. If the last piece is obtuse... We just start backtracking and begin an aimless quest, and we unintentionally began trying to 100% the game, because you don't know where the coins are...
I loved this game as a kid. I first got to experience it at a neighbor's house and would play the game with him and help him beat levels. Unfortunately i didn't get to play much because his mother would complain and make comments that i cannot beat the game for him, and he has to do it on his own... It was wtf, because instead of us enjoying the game together, his mother just wanted him to do it himself. I ended up getting the game myself and I loved it. I loved how they made us have to find the different Kongs, and how each area is set up to be Kong specific. Sure, there's a ton to the game,b ut as a kid, especially in those times where games weren't all that large, this was incredible. People these days make comments because we have so many different and large expansive games.. But besides a few others such as Super Mario 64, and Banjo Kazooie, DK64 was one of the largest 3d words we had back then... It was incredible. Also, it's odd they say it ended the genre, when we got Banjo Tooie for Gamecube. I think the issue stemmed from Rare being bought out by Microsoft... and then Microsoft did nothing with Rare. Because lets be real here... How many companies were putting out these "Platformers?"
It was torture (for some) getting the Nintendo coin, but the reward of unlocking the full "Donkey Kong" arcade game with all 4 levels plus all cut scenes was worth it. To the best of my knowledge it's the only way to play the full complete arcade game on a home console. All other console versions are either missing the pie factory level or the cut scenes or both. Nintendo should (physically) re-release "Donkey Kong 64" on the Switch along with...the first "Animal Crossing" & "Star Wars Rebel Strike: Rogue Squadron 3".
The character exclusive character collectibles suck, but trust me play the game with the swap anywhere mod. It is obvious that the game still has that rare ware style, and it’s absolutely a blast when you can swap on the fly
Thank you for mentioning not everything in the game needs to be collected to beat it. I only ever hear people complain about the size and I practically yell at the screen with “so don’t 100% the game then!!” The only way the game is overly massive with collectibles is for those who want to go the extra mile and get all 100%
I replayed this game back in 2018 and had much the same thoughts as you. "I dont care what everyone else says, yeah the game has its problems but dammit, this game is great." I could remember all of the secrets and banana locations and was able to intuit the ones i didnt have memories of. And yes nostalgia is doing some serious heavy lifting (my friends and i played this SOOO much) but even after getting 101% fir the first time (and beating for the first time). The only bananas i remember having trouble with was one of the beetle races, even beaver bother i didnt think was so bad.
This game took me 4-5 solid attempts to beat from childhood to now as my interest to push on beyond Fungi Forest always fizzled out. I finally did beat it a few of years ago and not only did I beat it, I 101% it at the same time and did it just under 36 hours.
Honestly the game is completely fixed with the cheat code or the patch that lets you switch Kongs on the fly and the use of save states for the few minigames that are actually bad (for me the scarab races, the second rabbit race and universally beaver bother). Consider having a collectable checklist too if you feel like doing a 101%. If you dig platformers, try it out
I revisited this game a few years ago and 101%'ed it and it is still one of my top 5 games of all time. Most games suck to 100%, but after this one I just want to play it again.
The reason why these collectathons got phased out is both because of a oversaterated market, and more storage on consoles. We could make a new level for every objective now instead of just having, like, 8.
My favorite game. I'm 32 now and have 101ed it 4 times and I'm I'm still obsessed with it. The mini games are my biggest gripe, but I don't even mind the back tracking. The collectjng is fine with me too. That crysral caves song you played is so good. Nostalgia at its finest ❤❤
One of the proudest moments and achievements in my life is when I went back to this damn game like 3 or 4 years later and conquered everything that stood in my way for a 101% completion. Also, Chunky is the reason why my favorite color is green 😊
I think I’m in the minority, but the Nintendo Coin was super easy for me. There was an old card shop I played Pokemon at and they had a Donkey Kong cabinet in the back with the coin button open so you could have infinite continues, and I think I got good at Donkey Kong lol.
I absolutely love this game. I remember my dad, and I did a math problem with each kong and their bananas. we also fogured with each color banana comes a different flavor too.
I managed to 101% the game... and the infamous fan peanut gun shooting challenge in Gloomy Galleon was the last golden banana I had to get. Little did I know at the time that that challenge is easier the earlier you do it. Soooo, I had a miserable time getting that gb. Still love DK64, though.
This is actually my favorite 3D platformer on the N64, or that era of consoles in general. Since being a retrogamer already from birth, I had no issues with the Donkey Kong arcade minigame, I consider the game's sole flaw to be the Beaver Bother minigame. Replace that with more stages of any other minigame and it'd be basically a perfect game. The Tag Barrels I consider to be superior design to the "swap anywhere" mods people float around as an alternative. If you can instantly switch from one character to another with the press of a button, you no longer have five characters, but a single character with a more than five times as complicated moveset/control scheme. The game would then need to be designed around characters MORE DIFFERENT than each other and a transformation mechanic, a completely different game and not just a better version of the one we got. When I played the game for the first time through, I got every collectible except for 25 green bananas and one golden banana in Buccaneer Bay. I just figured the game wasn't 100% finished at launch and they didn't find/make a place to put those since I could never find wherever they were, especially since I beat the game and my file said 100% complete (then 101% and I never thought it'd go to 102%). I figured since 75 was the threshold to get a medal and Tiny had an extra sixth banana in the hub world, her sixth was to make up for one of Chunky's being missing. One alternative that could also change the playstyle is if 2 or 3 golden bananas per Kong were made universally collectable by all Kongs if you can reach them. Like the Swap Anywhere mechanic but less so, this would change the game from what it is and possibly a little for the worse. There'd still be SOME things unique to every character while also encouraging people to find and pick favorites to play the most often. A sort of a compromize between two extremes. (ANY sort of Kong exclusive content is invalidated if you can instantly transform without limits of location or resources, this would merely make some of it less exclusive while preserving the need to use everyone to get everything if you desire.) I personally find Lanky the most fun to play, even if he's my least favorite to look at or listen to.
I remember skipping doing a french report in 9th grade 2004. My teacher left a message on my parents' answering machine while I was in the middle of racing the sliding beetle
People complain so much about having to run back to the tag barrel to collect the color codeditems but I loved it as a kid. It made each Kong feel all the more special and unique to me and the Kong select screen just oozes personality! I have never and will never accept that this game is anything less than amazing and I so badly wish we could get a modern 3D DK game at least somewhat similar to it ;-;
There is NOTHING wrong with “Collectathons”
Just think of it more as a “huge adventure”
Thats how people thought about it before the retarded word "collectathon" was invented.
DK64 though, is an actual collectathon xD
It isn't the collecting that kills it for people. It is having to go back to the barrel and swap kongs to collect certain things. It can get frustrating at times, the game would be helped feel less tedious if this wasn't the case or you could switch kongs on the fly
@@girlbuu9403 Yeah, if this game ever gets some kind of remake I'd love an on-the-fly switch..

And it seems the rest of the decade nobody had anything nice to say about the game. I’m glad that there are still plenty of folks who still adore the game.

"There's too many collectibles!!" they cry as they mindlessly consume every Ubisoft game packed to the gills with collectibles and map icons to check off...
Collectathon platformers were peak. I miss those so much!

Cost Because of a game breaking glitch rare was forced to pack in expansion packs With every copy of the game which costs them a fortune
Though I think the idea that this killed that genre is fundamentally false I don't think it did I think it just happened to be one of the tail end games of a genre that started to become obsolete as technology improved and created superior formats such as shooters both first person and third person
collective funds were basically made because game creators couldn't think of good ways to make 3D worlds compelling without using the idea of collecting items as the core of the gameplay
What was superior hardware from the next generation More complex and larger games were able to be built that no longer required collection Of trinkets
Donkey Konga and Viva Pinata and Microsoft. Tell your friends.
The biggest complaint I hear is "too many collectibles"
My brother in Christ you don't even need all of them to beat the game
To b fair that's kind of it's own issue. You only need about half in the game, which almost feels like a "beginner's trap" If a kid playing felt he did need ot get as much as possible and got as much but still wanted to get to see K Rool and stuff, he could almost feel like his time was wasted near the end.
Honestly I think they just needed to bump up the requirements a little more, like 75%. Banjo Kazooie, Tooie, and Grunty's Revenge have pretty good ratios.
The ones you need are still way too many lol
36 y/o this and banjo kazooie are why I mowed lawns and got my own n64 as a kid. Then I learned about the expansion pack. Fond times they were
I'm 38 and I bought this game the moment it came out.
There is one lie in this video: It claims that the Beetle races aren't cool.
problem is 50% of the game are copy paste of the same things over and over. And yeah I am talking about those mini games
True but thing is is that new players aren't going to know That they don't need to 100 percent the game And its contemporaries of the time had top people that it's a good thing to seek 100 percent
Banjo Kazooie in particular Required almost all of its puzzle pieces and notes To really beat the game Sure the hardest door and puzzle to complete are technically optional but you need that double health to beat the boss unless you have God like skills
you can miss two Jigsaw pieces and about 20 or 40 notes
And because of that most people are going to automatically assume that there's a similar reason to collect the things in Bandra Kazooie
And Collectathons Tend to be fundamentally different than most other game genres in that 100 percenting collection this makes more sense because the games are about collecting things so people are going to want to collect all the things because that's all of the game play
Still love DK64 and play it basically yearly. The only thing I dread about going back to it is having to do Beaver Bother.
literally the worst part about the game in my opinion
That and the freaking beetle race (especially the second one in the ice caves level). That laugh when you lose is rage-inducing.
@@AngelicSight Yeah, this is really the only bad thing in this game. And maybe Arcade Part 2 :D
But else? pure joy!
People legit play a collectathon and then complain that it has too many collectibles.
If they Just weren't color coded.
@@jakebowman3537Nah, the bananas being collectable by only one Kong is the dealbreaker.
I still didn't like Doom 3. It was too dark and just made me go back to playing Ultimate Doom and Doom II.
I love Doom 3, but you're kidding yourself if you think what you said is true. Doom 3 has been a highly divisive game since its release 20 years ago. The hate for Doom 3 pre-dates RUclips itself.
Nah man was divisive when it came out. Games not bad but it was aping off other fps at the time instead of being a fast paced doom game
@@draphkingYeah but it was fast compared to shooters like COD
DK64 didn't kill 3D platformers, fucking Blinx the Cat did.
If it killed 3D platofrmers then how did these games still get made?

While I like BK more thank DK64, I love both so much.
As someone who grew with Donkey Kong 64, yeah
DK64 is Banjo Threeie.
Same with Banjo tooie This is an amazing game (especially Grunty industries)
its a good example of real people and terminally online people.
@AnAverageGoblin probably the same people who hear Ocarina Of Time is "overrated" and form an opinion without playing it.
0:26 I’m 17 and I’ve loved this game ever since I got it on the Wii U virtual console
I'd have liked the game more as a kid if I didn't have to beat Arcade Donkey Kong and Jetpack. They kicked my ass.
Or......... well, anyway. lol
That sounds like a cool idea!
What a weak defense.
"You don't have to complete them"
Clearly you didn't beat the game at all. *Try again next time.*
@EddieSpaghetti69 "Why are there so many Korok Seeds only to give me a golden turd as a reward?"
Because collecting all of them was never the point.
Correct opinion. Good job.
There also needed to be something more for each character, i feel more areas should've centered around a specific Kong, Kreepy Kastle is the level that does that the best
The Nintendo coin also prevented me from beating the game as a kid.
and make DK the actual MAIN CHARACTER, since he is only a tutorial with all the easiest stuff. He is not even the one that defeats K Rool
@@PrinceDman you could also reduce the number of tag barrels as well since you'd no longer use them to swap characters
The consequences design doc has had for gaslighting ppl to hate this game’s genuinely unforgivable.
Being messy and being a good game don't have to be mutually exclusive. Banjo Tooie also fell into the same conversation.
Many of the problems in DK 64 is a skill issue tbh
Thank you! I've said to friends of mine that I call Banjo Tooie the Proto-DK64, but then found out it came out later so guess that name doesn't work.
Now after finally replaying the game after plenty of years, it only took a couple tries to beat them.
fun fact, you can still get the banana fairies behind the final key door
you can take a picture through the window and it counts
I absolutely SLAYED with Lanky Kong
All I think about when I play dk 64 is Jim Carrey saying " Banana " each time I see one

Do NOT skip this because its a trend to "hate" it.
If you love the old school 3d collectathons like Banjo Kazooie and Super Mario 64 and really miss those..
*play this game* !
As someone who has never player DK64, I was under the impression that everyone loved this game.
Oh no this game is really hated by the community it's got the singular problem of having to switch characters constantly to activate stuff which means you're going through each room up to five times oftentimes less than that it's usually around three
And there's just too many collectibles each world has 100 bananas for each of the five kongs so that's 500 in each world and the problem is is that these bananas can only be collected if you're that correct Monkey so lot of backtracking
then there's 10 golden bananas for each monkey for 50 in each world And unfortunately because there's so many of these the actual act of acquiring the golden bananas is often times repetitive as you'll often times enter a bonus game barrel for one but there's only like 5 or 6 different mini games so they keep getting replayed and quite a few of them are just not good particularly the fly swatting the sled race and the worst one of all the very glitchy beaver hurting where you try to get them into a hole however they don't want to go in the hole it's glitched where they'll just kind of cling to the side nobody has ever figured out a consistent way to get them into the hole every time so a lot of trial and error
Ohh and then of course there's coins for each kong to purchase moves and weapons there's one blueprint for each monkey in each world
And unfortunately the first two worlds cannot be 100 percented on your first time through scents you get the final two monkeys in the third world which means you have to backtrack to those worlds
there's actually a mod for this game that fans created that let's you switch monkeys at any point oh I forgot to mention also that you can only switch monkeys usually at certain designated points but moderates made it so you can just change them at any time which makes the game so much more fun
@@psycholuigiman this guy gets it
@@psycholuigiman There's a few flaws in your argument
First stop this game should be compared to if contemporaries which include banjo kazooie its sequel And mario 64 All of these games which are fun to 100 percent
second and the most important flaw in your argument is that it's not the amount of collectibles people have a problem with it's the fact that you constantly have to keep switching characters to get these collectibles
It's fundamentally unsatisfying to have to constantly switch characters for no other reason than to walk the same hallway 3 times because that hallway contains three different colors of bananas or two different colors of bananas and a golden banana for a 3rd
3rd Flaw In your argument is accusing everyone's Response to this game is Making the assumption that everyone's complained through this coffee to you and pasted from each other no they're not they're just all noticing the same flaws
fourth lies in terms of the 100 percenting the game In that it would require either looking up a walkthrough or multiple playthroughs to even know how much you need to grab To beat the game And since people are not going to want to keep running back to worlds to grab more stop it they're short they're going to grab as much as they can on the first run through
And quite frankly collective Dawn games have almost always been most enjoyable at 100% in them it's not like skyrim Or a grand theft auto where 100 percenting a a game is completely optional and expected to be more of a chore to pat out the game the whole point of a collectathon is to collect and if collecting is not fun then why are you playing the game and since collecting is the point of the game it should be fundamentally fun to collect and thus to 100 percent complete
That goddamn slide race against the beetle in Angry Aztec... that part still makes me seethe
Finally, an enlightened opinion from a high intelligence individual - much like myself.
nice
Back when I first played DK 64, I never had an issue with the Collectibles. That's what was going into this game for. The only issue I ever had is that in order to complete the game you have to beat original Donkey Kong not just once, but again with a higher difficulty setting. Aside from that, and some of the more annoying minigames, the game was fine. Still would rather play Banjo-Kazooie though.
This is the correct DK64 take
I didn't mind getting everything as this along with Banjo-Kazooie, Paper Mario and Rayman 2 were the games I grew up with as a kid.
I don't understand why people think DK64 is bad. I was under the impression it was as well-liked as Ocarina of Time.
@@zekay_I think it’s the weakest Rare N64 platformer, but I think people are way to mean to this game, it’s still a good game
@@darkhobo 3 lines of absolute brain rot
There were so many collectables and other things to do, because modern gamers forget… DLC AND ONLINE GAMING WASN’T A THING YET… you couldn’t add more to it later, or patch issues. It had to be a fully functioning, ready to go product right out the gate… It also had to entertain people for a long time to stay relevant. If it was over too quickly, nobody would play it
DK64 > Mario64
You know, flawed as DK64 may be, it is absolutely superior to Mario 64, and no one can convince me otherwise.

I think Banjo-Kazooie is better than Mario 64 while DK64 is more of a knockoff of B-K
@@Birthnote What about the game is a knockoff? Just recently beat DK64 and didn't get any Banjo vibes. B-K seems more similar to Mario 64 imo.
Always. 🔥🍌
But people overlook those readily, because they do so many things right."
Hell, do the opposite and find a more modern game that has more good qualities than bad.
Mid 90s games didn’t have more massive flaws than modern games. Most modern games require patches.
There is a romhack that does exactly this if you have the means to use it
Nah, the true fix is to make bananas collectable by everybody.
Yeah that final 2 coin door had me stumped as a kid as well. Many a sleepover were had trying to figure that ish out.
nightmares
It always makes me a bit sad when people cant distinguish between "i love it" and "its good/great."
Those two things are not related and dont influence each other.
Its just not.
absolutely
There is no objectively speaking when it comes to gauging quality of video games.
@ yes there is. The quality can be objectively judged. Your Personal enjoyment with it can not. Did i enjoy shitty games before? For sure. Can i face the fact that they are trash regardless? Yes.
@ Quality, when it comes to games, is determined by how fun the game is. Fun is entirely subjective.
I’ll be that guy
DK 64 > Banjo-Kazooie
This was a gem for sure. I was 5 in 2002 and remember my dad got the cartridge. We couldn't play it without the expansion pak. And I was devastated. Days later. My dad got the pak. And I member the euphoric feeling of finally being able to play it!.
"this game is great"
two seconds later: "its mostly nostalgia, dont play this game you wont like it"
ya know usually it takes at least a few minutes for one of these "defending dk64" videos to undermine itself, but thats gotta be a new record, BRAVO
Yeah it's a weird thing to say in a video trying to defend DK64's merits. If the game is only good if you're nostalgic for it, to the point where you're telling new players to not play it... maybe the game isn't that good?
@@Wahaller you ever notice how people don’t have to defend banjo with these sorts of videos and claims of nostalgia? Wonder why that is…………….
@@WahallerHis point was he loves the game, but knows it's not going to be for everyone.
*Why?*
Same issue with that game. Everyone remembers going fast as shadow and sonic, ripping up the highway and *"going fast"* but neglect to remember *any* of the eggman stages or digging for emeralds for *hours* because the game thought suddenly swapping genres was a *freakin' neato idea.*
I hate DK64 because of the minigames, none of them are *good* and come off as a haphazard way to extend playtime.
The player base has the same issues for both SA2B and DK64; which while small should be noted that *they have the same mentality.*
I'm not saying *Finkle is Einhorn* but I'm suggesting that Finkle *is likely* Einhorn, if you get my ancient reference.
That key was very hard to get. I remember how I felt walking through that door and getting the key. What a feeling
DK64 is the game that made me realize I didn't actually like 3D platformers.
Back then, we had so much more patience to discover a game. Simpler times
I can hum all of the instrument sound bites from memory
This game taught me how to beat the DK arcade game, giving me a cool party trick for life
I absolutely love this game.
(ANY sort of Kong exclusive content is invalidated if you can instantly transform without limits of location or resources, this would merely make some of it less exclusive while preserving the need to use everyone to get everything if you desire.)
I personally find Lanky the most fun to play, even if he's my least favorite to look at or listen to.
We reference THAT scene from Happy Gilmore all the time! GO HOME BALL!
I remember skipping doing a french report in 9th grade 2004. My teacher left a message on my parents' answering machine while I was in the middle of racing the sliding beetle
People complain so much about having to run back to the tag barrel to collect the color codeditems but I loved it as a kid. It made each Kong feel all the more special and unique to me and the Kong select screen just oozes personality! I have never and will never accept that this game is anything less than amazing and I so badly wish we could get a modern 3D DK game at least somewhat similar to it ;-;
