I live in Redditch with family connections with the old RE factory and the new Norton factory is just down the road from me so fantastic news for the West Midlands. • @motosnape
      @motosnape 3 года назад +18

      I can’t speak for Alinel, but quite simply, for the most part Chinese manufacturing is poor. In years gone by, I’ve sent a great deal of goods to landfill because they’ve failed due to poor quality and there’s no continued parts availability. The Chinese are capable of building things to appropriate specification (look at their state civil engineering projects), but when they build to a cost, even with their manufacturing might and scales of economy, the quality durability of the goods isn’t there, even when considering the purchase cost. I try to avoid ‘Made in China’ which is easier said than done.

    • @mohba01
      @mohba01 3 года назад +11

      @@saxualviking Based on my personal experience. I work in the auto industry and India has a vast portfolio of Chinese ancillary manufacturers for the industry.
      lots of casting parts for cars and motorcycles (wheels) are all made in china today. However, what chinese lack is putting the pieces together and building a reputation. for Eg take TVS, a relatively unheard manufacturer in the west actually has many factory efforts in international racing is still a family-run business with even the executive board filled with motorcycle enthusiasts. cant say the same about china as the orientation is different.

    • @mohba01
      @mohba01 3 года назад +6

      @@motosnape whatever said and done, no one, not even japan cant match the tooling and manufacturing capacity + low labor when it comes to mass producing things. not just motorcycles or cars, everything in general. ppl need to understand that china has a very large local market it caters to which DID NOT buy chinese, but in India it was the opposite. everything however is slowing getting into some sort of equilibrium now with markets and models being global and not local as it used to be before

    As an Indian motorcyclist, my hope is that TVS make encourage the creation of affordable retro motorcycles like a 500 single with sharp handling dynamics or even a smaller parallel twin to compete with RE's 650 twins. By the way, have you seen what the Indian company Mahindra has done with the Czech company they bought? Just look at the Jawa Classic. They used a modern 300 cc water cooled single and made the whole bike look like a replica of the original Jawa!! The Interceptor and Bonneville look modern by comparison. That is a purely aesthetic comparison, by the way, and my own opinion.

    Stu, I'm with you on what spins my 2 wheels. I am keenly interested in Norton. At 68 the number of years that I can manage a heavy machine are for sure limited, and I'm not a big guy like you. That is one reason I love my RE 650. The lines of the bigger model Norton twins are more like those of yore, which just seems right. Do you have weight figures for the various models? Don't get me wrong--I have a Himalayan also and find the REs from India to be great bikes. I have never had an English made bike (I live in the USA). It seems to me that the new owners are correct to keep production in the UK. Really great motorcycles are more than a collection of bits slapped together--they have a soul instilled in them by those who have designed them and struggled to bring them to fruition and assemble them with pride. Thanks for the report. I will be looking forward to the upcoming ones on Norton. Please keep us posted on all the models. Hoping you guys get out of lockdown soon.

British bikes were and are simple and it has noting to do with high tech but rather sound comportment feeling and sheer pleasure of riding ,not of mechanical tech specifications , no just the joy of reliving a time of simplicity and fun . Myself a Royal Enfield fast not fast horsepower less more i could not give a flying leap ,it is happiness pleasure simple undiluted pleasure

I thank you for your research on this true find and hope for more to know everything about the new Norton. I ask the Lord to convince his readers to try to convince Norton (T.V.S.) to produce less expensive models with the Royal Enfield offered here in Brazil. Isn't funny Norton seems to be on the same trajectory as Indian after they went ten toes up in 1953. Indian went through incarnation after incarnation until a company (Polaris) with very deep pockets finally purchased the name & rights. I can remember the Royal Enfield Indians of the late 50s & early 60s, the minibike Indians and a couple more in the 70s & 80s. Then the Gilroy, California Indian that was almost a kit bike built with off the shelf parts & engines (S&S)
    Now with a little luck, proper planning, quality bikes and very deep pockets maybe TVS can really and truly res-erect Norton.
    Very good report
    Keep up the good work.

      Not necessarily as the skilled manual labour content is minimal. However being British built their products can carry a premium price. Providing their bikes represent value for money then they will sell and Norton will have a future.
      Value for money for me equals quality of components, performance, handling, reliability, maintainability, style, build quality, kudos etc. rolled up and put in the market at a sensible price. What would I pay for an 80 HP Norton? £13,000 to 15,000.

And great handling, due to the 'featherbed' the envy of all else at that time.. Here in Spain a friend bought a Red 600cc Dominator over from UK ...The Red ones are quite rare nowadays..I rode it a few times, it still had the 'grin' factor....I can understand your love for these old/new classics...Its a shame Norton didn't go down the same manufacturing route as Triumph and Enfield..... building a modern version of the famous Dominator. Same 'Featherbed'' frame, same engine, now with a modern specification. ie: suspension, electrics and metallurgy...I'm sure us old bikers from the sixties would give them a serious look as you have for Triumph and Enfield..Greeting from España

    Great update and upbeat report on the Norton Brand. Still out of my price range but if ever they build an adventure tourer I'd be sorely tempted.

      @@johnmartin7158 I'm working in Dubai now but call Batangas home.
      Moved out there 15 years ago and few of the Airborne brothers joined me.
      Hence Para's in the Philippines.
      We broadcast to British Squaddies posted overseas.
      Stuff the usual military media doesn't post.

    I wish TVS Norton all the best and it's good to see they have honoured the commitment to keep design and production in the UK against the uncertainties of Brexit. I hope Norton learn from the demise and rise of Triumph motorcycles and eventually offer entry level motorbikes which bring people into the brand. What Triumph have done with the Triumph Trident is exactly what Norton should be doing in some years time. I appreciate they need to build the brand and throw off the baggage they have been carrying in recent years. I'd love to be able to jump into a time machine and see Norton in 10 years time as a thriving motorcycle company doing well under TVS's custodianship.

    Nice piece of information thanks Stuart, I reckon Norton was king through my early biking days so would be good to see them in the market especially as we can see what RE have achieved. And, clearly, any org that really wants to make it's way needs to take all marketing opportunities and the senior vloggers such as yourself are an absolute necessity and I'm sure you won't be bashful to point that out haha. They'd do well to build the right relationships ;)

    I think if they continue development and building in the UK 🇬🇧 I think they'll do well ....If they suddenly switch production to India 🇮🇳 or elsewhere to cope with demand ( doing a Triumph ) might be viewed differently ?
    Are we so accepting of Royal Enfield because they've been made in India for so long its got a real heritage .....I don't have the answers , only time will tell !
    Atlas looks the biz though 👍

    I remember when Norton started their comeback & a show in England. I really wanted the Dominator in the worst way. Tried several times to talk to the Norton dealer in Florida. No such luck. Never heard back & the next thing I knew, S. Garner was living high on the hog with Norton’s money.
    Still love the Dominator.

    If what I read and hear is correct, TVS knows how to build bikes. If they make a great Norton Commando , and I bet they do, I would put one in my garage and support the brand. Especially since they see the value in keeping a British footprint. Look forward to riding a new Norton 👍. Love Modern Classics

    I honestly don't think the Norton brand was damaged I believe everyone knows it is Stuart Garner who is damaged and not the fault of the brand, it's not like the products though expensive were inferior. I wasn't surprised it is being resurrected though surprised John Bloor or a Chinese company didn't buy it and more so it's staying in the UK. I'm not sure about the Atlas, Triumph, Royal Enfield, Moto Guzzi, Harley Davidson, Ducati etc have prooved successful business is in their traditional products. I would stick with variances of the twins until such times the market is ready for other products from Norton, that said I have no doubt these guys know what they are doing and know better than me. I wish them success.

    Imagine the possibilities with a bit of badge engineering. Britain's roads could be populated by the Norton Star City, the Norton XL100 Heavy Duty, the sporty but economical Norton Apache and not least the Norton Scooty Pep in about 50 colour schemes including a nice two-tone pink and mauve.

    Let's hope that TVS can sell the bikes for a realistic price, and not the fantasy that Garner pursued, which put them squarely in the 'investment' category.
