🇿🇦 Why are there blackouts across South Africa? | The Stream

- Опубликовано: 8 фев 2023
- A prolonged energy crisis in South Africa has left citizens facing daily power cuts as the country’s state owned energy company Eskom takes drastic measures to conserve power. Having failed to modernise its aging coal infrastructure or keep pace with the nation’s energy demands, 2022 was a year of record blackouts in the country, with more than 200 days of power cuts.
Businesses have shuttered, some hospitals find themselves running on diesel generators and households are struggling to plan simple daily tasks like cooking or charging a cellphone.
It’s been estimated that the country's GDP has been diminished by 1-1.3 percent each year since 2007 as a result of the crisis, with daily losses ranging from $87-232 million per day. Losses that further exacerbate fears of a recession during an already difficult cost of living crisis.
A recent rate-hike on top of rolling blackouts saw hundreds of people decide to protest in Johannesburg earlier this year. The government is currently considering a state of disaster in order to free-up resources to address the crisis, while environmental campaigners highlight the need for a long term transition to renewable energy.
In this episode of The Stream, we discuss how people are affected by the daily uncertainty of load shedding and what’s needed to end the energy crisis in South Africa.

CORRUPTION IS THE REASON for the Crisis. Changing and adding inexperienced staff is not going to change the situation. The citizens are paying huge energy costs and the funds are not necessarily used for energy .
Incompetence too
When did this corruption you speak of take hold and what was the catalyst for its coming about.
South Africa is extremely corrupt from the top to the bottom and it is deteriorating by the minute..
ANC is the problem. But SA is past making a solution, there is nothing that will help the situation now. WAKE UP SOUTH AFRICANS, FIGHT BACK
What do you think was going to happen, years of apartheid with millions of black people without electricity during its time. Now that more black people have electricity it is a big problem. Yes, the current government has some blame ,but the main problem What happened in the past
@@taharka3897 Yes, always blame the former govt. Instead of the current corrupt govt, cable thieves, coal thieves, municipalities not paying for electricity. Yes, you will have a winning solution🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@taharka3897 Many people are not paying for power and most of those would be ANC voters.
@MikeDredgeAustralia I don't want to hear anything from a racist, do not comment to me
@@taharka3897 past problems like blacks “necklacing” other blacks by the ANC??? Hmmm?
Drop the tired victim card nobody is buying that anymore.
As we talk we don't have electricity 😭it's raining we're hungry,we went to school but we can't get jobs.. It's sad really
Thank your government for that.
Massive corruption is without doubt a factor plus cadre deployment, therefore ending up with incompetent and criminal staff to run a complex old utility.
Yeah why are you here?
The MAFIA in government is very happy and busy in South Africa.
@@kingspawn2412 Why are you here ?
No water no electricity. South Africa keeps on sliding downward.
It used to be the richest and most developed country in Africa.
The MAFIA government is very much in control.
Used too? It still is the richest and most developed country in Africa, other african countries are in worse situations than South Africa
@janviljoen9554 Bro Egypt is done South Africa surpassed Egypt economy decades ago and South Africa is the only country in Africa with a military industry that makes missiles and nuclear bombs and attack helicopters
@janviljoen9554 Egypt government got overthrown a few years ago so how do they have better law and order and now Egypt is an authoritarian regime
@@Pkxvk What do you call South Africa's regime ?
In my view, it is as a result of poor planning. The population has increased and demand has increased but infrastructure has not. It means those in power have not done enough in good time to increase capacity hence the load shedding. This is the same next door in Zimbabwe. People get electricity 4hrs a day at night, which is crazy.
When did these problems start in these countries? What changed?
My friend your problem is not about population increase, your problem is the CIA. Once south Africa sees themselves as Developed nation and challenging the West(powers that be) , the west aren't happy about that and will stop at nothing to crumble south Africa economy. Take Nigeria 🇳🇬 for example the massive investment that has gone into power generation with nothing to show for it. My take is there are powerful people behind the scenes pulling the strings 🚶♂️
@@olajiderasheed8686 This is the African problem- to blame it on the West when everyone can see what is going on. We refuse to take full responsibility. Where is the plan, the 5yr or long term plan/strategy on electricity generation, zero and we blame others, no, I beg to differ. Let us put everything in place and see if we fail. When that happens we must do a root cause analysis of why we failed. If we are honest with ourselves we will understand why and how we failed and make improvements. How many policy makers do we have that honestly tell us the truth, a few because those that do we perceive them as enemies and we get rid of them. We suffocate our talent all the time. We suffer from hero worshipping and group thinking in my view.
South Africa made its bed, now it can lie in it.
Very well and correct said ,!
Please explain
The country is deteriorating by the day with the ANC government.
It is the very same situation in Sri Lanka for the last 1 year or more.
the answer is simple the ANC is a bunch of naaiers Kak skelm naaiers
The issue is that RSA is moving too quickly in its "saving the planet" ideology. Fix the current maintenance problems with the coal-fired generators and then focus on the Green planet. Have all the experts abandoned their jobs?
The cause of the problem is aging coal plants and a growing population that often does not pay bills. New generation capacity is needed. Try nuclear.
The world suffers from this ridiculousness! Some countries will be crushed by the weight of nonsense. LOL
You don't know what you're talking about. The government stole the country bancrupt. The experts had to leave the country because they couldn't find jobs due to BEE. Do your homework please.
🤣are you serious?????????????????
Amongst state capture theft we have thieving cadres working in the power plants, corrupt contractors creating breakdowns to ensure repair business, anc municipalities with a culture of non payment for power in excess of some R53bn. Then state owned entities like Denel, Transnet etc not paying for power, huge civilian tracts where people don't pay for power and in fact illegally connect to the power grid. The generators should be standby units but are keeping the grid alive at phenomenal cost. New plants such as kusile and medupi not functioning correctly due to design issues. The list is endless.
The anc like all of Africa like to reinvent the wheel while wholesale theft goes on unabated at a breathtaking level. It's beyond mind boggling.
Pay your suppliers and you get the Fuel to run your generators.
SA is in economics collapse! They've suck that country dry, run it into the ground. lol
Yes/نعم 😊
The moment South Africa gets to generator economy it is the end of South Africa. You better go and take a look at Nigeria.
*ADANI can do the Magic 😜 🤣🤣🤣*
It’s high time the ANC gets booted out from power.
No, no, no... that's racist. Let's stay the course and complete run SA into the ground! 🙄
Once upon a time a first world country.
What is load shedding? You have to experience it daily to define it.
Agbaye
they cut the power to towns and cities to avoid a country wide grid collapse. They schedule it. Depending on what stage/level of loadshedding it is. We get loadshed 2 to 3 times a day in which they cut power for 2 to 4hours per loadshedding event.
@@mankaner I'm part of it daily.
@@TK-ys2du ridiculous right. SA is screwed. Some say we are witnessing it colapse but in my eye it has collapsed all ready. It took 30 years for one political party to bankrupt a whole country. They milked the cow dry and now they are eating the cow.

You have not been canceled. You have just been “load shedded”.
Hahaha. Clever.
I won’t go as far as saying it’s deliberate but, I’ll walk up to that line & then redirecting to blah blah blah & privatization will look like a solution instead of the cause😐
Its the End Game when all valuable Public Assets are gradually acquired by Private Capital.
We have witnessed the greatest transfer of Public Wealth: utilities, resources, institutions to Corporations so that they may 'run it' more efficiently in a more 'equitable' way, and let elected Govts off the hook. Wait til they privatize water, you'll be fined for collecting it from your roof.
Lack of political will into fixing all apartheid inherited infrastructures is a main problem, that leads the country into this darkness
You mean not being able to maintain the the apartheid inherited infrastructures which
Thanks,
South Africa, your problem is the CIA. The devil is at work, they want to break humanity
Lol South Africa should go and ask their Allies china and russia to give them some electricity 😂😂😂😂
Buying or renting pawar from big companies will be key for more corruption south Africa can help themselves
A well-maintained coal power plant can run for 50 years or so before needing to be replaced. They shouldn't need major work within the first decade unless something has gone terribly wrong during construction. Poor planning, partly caused by government refusal to build more generators in the 2000s, has ensured that demand far outstrips supply, and it will only come back into balance with massive (uncorrupted) investment over multiple years. Good luck with that.
Since ..the native africans has take over..not nice to hear but its the fact. Now they can se if rusdia will help them...
The situation got considerably worse under Andre De Ruyte (a non "native African") but go on... Cue the "you can't expect him to fix Eskom in a matter of years" trope.
Needs closed captioning
🤣 its so satisfactory
Coz the solution it not coming today people they do crying everyday and the people loosing job it not good because even zambia provide electricity to south africa but it not enough south africa is crying even zimbabwe and zambia too just right now I'm in darkness so what I can say is the southern africa leader should work together to solve the situations in the region I thank you.
"Effective Credit CONTROL & Everyone (Starting With The NUMBER ONE CITIZEN) PAYING For SERVICES Will Turn The TIDE"
They should move closer to Russia to solve their energy crisis.
You've got to be kidding.
They are part of BRICS.
@Nembiya "from,,Namibia yeah hard to run a factory or farm without energy, which means less money for the people. Why more south africans die of starvation than europeans dieing of freezing. But thank you sun.
@Nembiya "from,,Namibia All the money that was spent on upgrading and maintaining Escom disappeared. Part of the problem is that Chancelor House (the ANC's "investment wing") bought majority share in Hitachi, which then miraculously won the bid to build Kusile and Medupi Power Stations and that was more than a decade ago and it's still not producing. The other part of the problem is that Escom, just like all parastatals, was identified as a great place for "cadre deployment" and at the same time BEE was used as an excuse to put buddies in high paying jobs which they are not qualified for while the qualified people left.
@Nembiya "from,,Namibia Nobody in Europe is freezing. Europe saw the games that Russia was playing with hydrocarbons and stocked up before the winter. Right now Russia is getting less for their oil than they got before the invasion. The loser is Russia, and nobody else.
Because of money 🤔🤔🤔🤔 government of south Africa had mo money to buy electricity
MESSAGE TO THE HOST OF ALJAZEERA, I have friends in South that have a personal friend whom sent $500Million to help with the energy crisis as a humanitarian project. His money has been blocked in the Central Bank of South Africa. While your South African leader was seen on TV, that there are no funds to fix the energy problem. The money that is being invested by others who want to help in being blocked. Who is playing this game, the banks, the government, the energy company or outside governments or intruders. 7pm US Eastern time 10:02
WEF - depopulation is their game under cover of combatting climate change which naturally, has nothing to do with CO2 and everything to do with the current magnetic pole excursion = there's absolutely no valid reason (beyond total corruption) as to why South Africa is being deprived of power.
What about ☀️ solar power?.... 🙄
🌞
Just a tip guys.the Japanese have perfected the hydrogen fuel cell and the last time I looked..hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe..so maybe the csir should experiment or license the patent.
Simple!!! Years of no investment in more power generation despite the rise in demand
well investment was there but instead they decided to steal the money that was meant to build extra generation.
@@mankaner then there was no investment 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆. Money was only set aside but not used for the purpose.
Demand is only one component for investment. Unless there is the ability and will to pay for the power, nothing will happen.
@@JanBruunAndersen am from Kenya but to be honest am really getting disappointed when I see the happenings in SA. From Eskom to South Africa Airways to infrastructure to name it.

If I recall correctly, it wasn't that long ago that SA was trying to "license"/ban solar, including "offgrid" setups, maybe that type of mindset might play a little (big) role in the current situation. As for the farmers, why's it so hard to move their thinking forward?!? Solar is literally down to less than a couple hundred USD per KW installed, batteries aren't much different. It's not hard at all. I appreciate SA's not super wealthy, but heck, how many hilux's are around the place!? Let's also change the way we farm, no need to continue in the same rape/pillage farming style of the past few thousand years. Smaller, more efficient, highly productive farms are what we need. Corruption doesn't control how we run our farms/businesses/renewables etc etc. We need to kill "the grid" asap and allow greater energy autonomy amidst our populations. My phone has no load shedding, power our houses by the same tech, a battery (lead acid, bricks hanging, pumped water whatever!!). We don't need a "transition", we need leap! Jump! Capitalism has the answer, let the market create solutions, don't limit potential by archaic/socialist laws.
