    Thanks for posting. It did help, particularly the re-assembly of the sensor unit. I think pulling it apart completely is not necessary and adds complexity/difficulty to the job. I would certainly advise against pulling the covers off the gears and axles at each. It isn't needed to remove the scrubber assembly. Also, the metal blade in this unit can be left in place. Also, you can tip the toner out and then vacuum or even clean with compressed air if you have that luxury

    This video was EXTREMELY helpful! It gave me the courage to take it apart and showed how to put it back together. My toner box was completely full and making a mess of the printing. After cleaning it all out (in my garage so I wouldn't breathe any toner) using compressed air and a microfiber cloth, it looks, and works, like new! It save me $35 and a little less plastic in the landfill. Thanks for this video and giving my HL-4570CDW a new lease on its life!!

      I'm so glad! Thanks for the comments. I was like you when I first did it.
      try not to blow the toner to make it airborne , you can just wipe it with a wet paper towel . remove most of the toner out and close the cover up will make it work.
      having been doing this for years.

    I've got a MFC 93330CDW with a WT200CL WT box. The 200 is clipped together. I could unclip it enough to just empty it - by putting it in a plastic bag and upending it. This took about 10 mins more than just swapping to a new WT box and saved me $43 in not buying a new box. Plus it's a better environmental solution.

    Thanks JC! You rock!
    Another option to vacuuming it would be to use a can of compressed air. I would be wary of using an air compressor since they can spit out a high volume of moisture, which would be bad for anything related to printers or electronics. The toner is NOT good for your lungs, so do this outside and away from others if you go this route. Also, the vacuum filter may not filter out the toner and just spray it back into the air... inside... which would be bad for your lungs as well. And probably your house, but your lungs are more important. Other sites point out that vacuums can build static electricity and zap electronics. Don't see any electronics on this part, but maybe don't get cleaning happy and stick the vac hose into the printer housing.
    ... oh look! A soap box!! Let me... just... hop up here for a sec... and...
    It amazes me how people criticize music, lighting, lack of 'fast forwarding effect' during monotonous sections like taking out screws, etc. When I find a vid posted by somebody like me who simply recorded something they figured out so others would KNOW it works without wasting time trying it myself (instead of spending time with my family or friends, etc) then that person has 100% done it right no matter things like bad lighting, crazy auto focus cameras, differing tastes in music, etc. They are LEARNING how to make videos and post them on top of whatever else the video itself is about. I don't give a crap about how far along the 'fancy video editor/producer' curve they are because I don't want to know about those traits or tricks. I want to know about the CONTENT of the video. And what are comments for? Ask Finlay, Berny, Patrick, et al., who made a valid 'provide feedback related to the topic of the video' post.

    Thank you so much for posting this vid. Very helpful, did the job brilliantly. I wonder though if it's necessary to do more than remove the 6 screws holding the top plate on, remove and vacuum out the waste toner, give it a good banging to get the toner from the archimedes screw and vacuum again? It's that that stops the sensor moving up and down.
    Thank you again - saved the day for me as I didn't have time to get a new one and the machine just suddenly said replace WT with no warning.

    • @Shamino0

      Be very careful when trying to vacuum toner. Toner, as a fine powder, can catch fire when exposed to a spark (e.g. from the motor of a hand-held vacuum cleaner).
      It might be safer to just put the box in a plastic bag and shake/bang the toner out rather than try to vacuum it clean.

    Thanks for taking the time to post this vid. It helped me resolve a printing issue related to waste toner box being over-full. In fact mine was jam packed. Seems silly to bother buying a new one as long as you don't breathe large doses of toner and you dispose of the waste in required way.

    • @JCJourney
      @JCJourney  8 лет назад +4

      I always try to fix or repair stuff and avoid buying anything. the more you buy, the more waste you generate. I even reuse the toner inside the waste box. I put them back to the cartridge as refill toner and it runs ok. as long as you don't need super high quality print. 99.9% of my printing is for text.

    Def. use disposable gloves & pad the work area with news print paper! Whew, thank god you don't have to mess with the gears on the side. Also, about how many prints before the box has to be emptied/serviced? I'm on about 4500 now. You can also use isopropyl or water with paper towel to wipe away toner dirt, seems to work well enough.

    Rubber gloves. Work outside or in garage to keep toner mess to a minimum. Use paper towels and rubbing alcohol to clean up excess toner on the outside at the very least. What is the environmentally-friendly way of disposing of the toner powder?
    Nice details for all of the gears and levers and how to reassemble the unit properly. Personally, I'd buy a new waste toner unit first, in case the empty job goes wrong.

    • @JCJourney
      @JCJourney  8 лет назад +2

      it is safe to handle and protection is always recommended . I will suggest using protective gears like gloves and mask to avoid any contact possible.
      Toner powder is made of carbon powder and iron oxide. Higher quality toner was melt-mixed with a polymer to improve the quality of the printout.

    No no no! just remove the one screw holding the little clear sensor capsule on the bottom, drill a 5 or 6 mm. hole in the side corner diagonally opposite, apply a vacuum to both holes, (several times alternatively). replace the clear capsule (also vacuumed) and screw, put a piece of tape over the hole, job done. No mess 1 minute. I also rotated the gear on the side to retract the sensor blade, not sure if this matters or not.

    Or just spend $20 on Amazon for a NEW waste toner box. The problem with vacuuming out the box is you don't address the soft roller which is what cleans the toner off the transfer belt. This roller gets saturated with toner over time and even cleaning out the box doesn't solve the problem of completely cleaning the transfer belt with a saturated roller. I tried cleaning my waste toner box just like you did and although it was empty after my work, I still did not get totally clean copies. Once I replaced the box with a new one (and new roller of course), the problem was solved. Thanks for your video but considering the mess involved and what it can do to your vacuum and your lungs, replacing an inexpensive box is still the best way to go for clean copies!

    • @JCJourney
      @JCJourney  7 лет назад +1

      agree. if you want to have super clean and clear copy for printing graphic. it works for me and copy which mostly just text copy. I also refill the toner cartridge. I print more than 50000 pages each year and doing these save me hundreds of dollars.

      Bit of an environmental disgrace though, to throw away a large plastic box just because it's got some dust in it. Printer companies should be doing a lot more to reduce waste instead of just encouraging more product replacement for their profit.

    • @JCJourney
      @JCJourney  7 лет назад

      yes, you can do that. that are all similar design, just different shape for different printers. :) I just did another clean up couple days ago after printing about 22000 pages.

    • @billanderson8691
      @billanderson8691 6 лет назад +1

      YES, HL-3140 uses the WT220CL box with 3 terminals on the side. A new WT220CL should measure zero ohms between the outer 2 terminals... because you make sure the two contacts under the small black cover are pushed together. IF it still wont work....The middle terminal supplies a high voltage to the black roller. use a vacuum to ensure there isn't any toner at the ends of the roller/case, leaking the voltage away to ground.

    Don't use a regular vacuum when cleaning toner or use canned air, Unless you eat Tide pods then go for it!!! Toner is toxic, and flammable. I seen a laser printer and copier repair guy light up a vacuum clearer, looked like a jet engine out the back of the thing. Slowly dump the toner in a bag, tap the housing a few times, wipe off parts and put back together. Oh and one more thing, whats up with the music and sounds like tap being ripped off. LOL

    I hold a Bachelor's in Information Technology and am an A+ certified computer/electronics technician. I am unsettled by the lack of warnings in this video! For anyone considering this process as an alternative to the expensive replacements, please understand that toner in this powdered form can be dangerous. This person did not take proper precautions at all. Wear gloves! If there is a lot of toner in contact with your skin, it can cause iritation. Wear a mask as well. Toner particles are very very small and they are not wet like ink. They can and will aerosolize if you knock things around. Some toners contain known carcinogens and you wouldn't want to breath them in even if they didn't. They can cause airway or lung troubles at the best of times or cancer at the worst. Lastly, I'm not sure about legal disposal of waste toner, but I would not recommend anything like a vacuum without a certified Hepa air filter or any cleaning tools/brushes that would unsettle the toner powder and again cause it to aerosolize.

      try to wash it off. It will be cleaner. try not to make the toner flying and be airborne.

    ?????????
    What's the idea here ?
    There is no fun in just taking it apart and put it together again - right ?
    Could the waste toner be re-used ?
    Is it just to empty the waste container ?
    or what ?
    and then KILL that music and speak instead !

    How is this colossal mess and waste of time worth saving $25? Unless you basically wash the entire box, all that toner is going to be floating around in your printer.

    This is about the most useless tutorial/demo/whatever the hell you call it video I have seen on RUclips yet. The noise does what for this video exactly now (or music is it)? Yikes-
