The Batman of Earth-Two is an alternate version of the fictional superhero Batman, who appears in American comic books published by DC Comics. The character was introduced after DC Comics created Earth-Two, a parallel world that was retroactively established as the home of characters whose adventures had been published in the Golden Age of comic books. This provided justification within the fictional world of Batman stories for DC Comics publishing Batman comic books that disregarded the character's Golden Age stories, as Batman had been presented as a single ongoing incarnation of the character since his earliest stories were published.
Batman of Earth-Two first appeared in Justice League of America #82 and was created by Dennis O'Neil and Dick Dillin.
The character history of the Earth-Two Batman accordingly adopts all of the earliest stories featuring the character from the 1930s and 1940s, while the adventures of the then-mainstream Silver Age Batman (who lived on "Earth-One") begin later in time and with certain elements of his origin retold. Each were depicted as separate, though parallel, individuals living in their respective universes, with the "older" Earth-Two character eventually reaching his retirement and death.
A parallel to this character is introduced in Justice Society of America (vol. 2) Annual #1 (2008) entitled "Earth-2" where the Post Crisis Earth-2 is fully introduced. The most notable difference between Pre-Crisis Earth-Two Wayne and his newer Post-Crisis Earth-2 incarnation is that the Post-Crisis Earth-2 Joker learned the real identities of Robin and the Huntress after turning Gotham DA Harvey Simms into the new Two-Face (Harvey knowing Helena's identity already).
A new parallel to this character was introduced in the 2012 Earth-2 series who died in the first issue, protecting that world from Darkseid's forces, alongside that world's Superman and Wonder Woman. His father, Thomas Wayne, later took up the mantle to atone for earlier sins, including deceiving his son about his own death. Dick Grayson would also take up the mantle during Earth 2: Earth's End and Earth 2: Society. Helena would later don the mantle after Dick retired at the end of the Society series.

While I am someone that is fine with the “endless crusade” of mainline comic continuity (though wish they also didn’t play the death card so often.) I can see this is a good respectable end for the Batman. He got to settle down with a wife and a kid that wasn’t traumatized but still continued to help fight as Commissioner. He went out on his own terms and got to do the most Batman thing you could think of by stopping a crime while dead.
And yeah I would like to see more comic content like this on the channel.

"Only legends live forever, not the men who make them."
That might be one of the deepest things I've ever heard. Comics really should do more of this, sticking with an idea and not just going back to the status quo. The change makes the characters more real and it helps the readers connect more and the characters grow and change with them.

Honestly I love the ideas of mantles and the mask mattering less than the person who puts it on, but this is just such a respectful take. Also it's a take that's necessary to the modern Batman. DC takes the worst of both worlds with Batman making the mission and the cowl one in the same. His legend has become a shadow that just won't let any bat family member go. It's to the point where Gotham literally breaks down if the Batman isn't out on the streets every night (Bruce's replacements when he's dead or got his back broke don't even want to be batman, but the are literally forced to by the plot). What makes it even worse is how many original hero identities exist in the bat family now. In the golden age dick took over as Robin going solo and that was perfectly fine. In modern comics dick became Nightwing and his own premier hero, and yet STILL is told that Gotham NEEDS the Batman. When Bruce is out of commission Nightwing won't cut it. I get that Batman is a symbol and a legend and inspires hope, but at the same time that doesn't mean he has to exist in perpetuity. I'm fine if he does as in there's always someone who WANTS to take up the mantle, but the idea that there HAS to be a Batman is just deconstructive.

I don't mind Helena Bertinelli, but I like the idea of Huntress being Batman and Catwoman's daughter instead, and I love how her costume looks like a perfect blend of Batman and Catwoman's costumes at the time. my problem is and this will sound elitist is just cost, to me a $9 paperback novel is more cost effective cus 350 pages of text, a comic is less valuable cus 12 pages mostly really impressive art but only 2 or 3 pages of legit text if that and the modern books with lengthy monologues on flat single color backgrounds are terrible and boring lol
i like comics when they're good, i own the 4 part Spawn The Impaler story i totally get the closure aspect gods now that was a good story even if it wasn't a novel, it's hard to kick the preference for novels aside sometimes....and is is cool to see in the older comics bats had a better end than in the modern era, marrying Selina Kyle? that's cool as hell

I think that they made a mistake in the Convergence comics with this Earth, not only did Dick change that "ridiculous costume" for the most well known Earth-Two Robin costume way before Bruce died (he did it after meeting Earth-One Robin the first time) but the characters don't feel like they are continuing from the narrative of the older issues and just being written based on footnotes.
It's a shame because even though i like Batman being a mantle that can be used by different generations, i like the idea of the original verse being the exception, and Batman being only one guy in a legacy of superheroes that goes beyond the Batman mantle, making Bruce the one and only Batman, also it gives the Robin mantle it's own identity instead of the stand-in for the "real superhero identity" that it is in modern times.
On top of that, they messed up the continuity by having him be far too young in Convergence, when he already reached middle age in the JSA annual.
And having Dick be Batman undermines Helena's importance as the legacy of Batman, instead of having two original superhero personas that follow Batman's legacy (Huntress and Robin), you have Batman's successor and his offshoot companion.
The writers of Convergence were working too much with the current m.o. of characters constantly succeeding Batman instead of respecting what was written in the Earth-Two stories.
I appreciate what Convergence does in restoring the verse, but these changes are unnecessary, if you are going to restore a timeline only to change all the important developments for these characters in the opposite direction, then why are you even restoring it at all?

Convergence had many such mistakes. This is the problem with trying to revisit old versions of continuity with modern writers who don't know or appreciate any of it. For me, one of the most egregious moments happened in the Legion of Super-Heroes Convergence story. Ayla Ranzz (sometimes known as Lightning Lass, sometimes known as Light Lass) is moping about because Timber Wolf broke up with her. However, back in the actual comics of the day, Ayla left the Legion and told Timber Wolf that he could come with her or they could break up. Timber Wolf chose the Legion over her, but basically, she was breaking up with him. And she left the Legion at that point, so she wouldn't still be hanging around in costume at Legion HQ like she was in the Convergence story.
I have lots of stories of "modern writers not understanding older continuity but writing it anyway". Like the story of 1950s or 1960s Wonder Woman, needing help from a military plane to get her to a certain location that she had to parachute down to. I mean, come on. First, she has her own plane, the invisible jet. Second, she doesn't need a parachute, she can glide on air currents... or just jump incredible distances anyway. Or, even Doctor Who comics, where a writer had the First Doctor piloting the TARDIS to a specific time and place to meet up with an old friend. Like, he can't do that.

time changes things, it changes how we view the world around us, it changes our own perspectives of ourselves and the people around us. The earth-2 Robin becoming Batman was something that had to happen , the way I see it Bruce Wayne trained dick Grayson to be Robin in hopes of taking over for him as Batman when he retired. Batman is an ideal a symbol of hope for the citizens of Gotham to rally behind and inspire, and fight and I still fear on the criminal elements that prey upon them.
I personally thought dick Grayson was too old to be Robin anyway, look the earth-1 dick Grayson was 19 years old when he stopped being Robin and became Nightwing becoming a hero in his own right at the same time evolving beyond Robin reaching near Batman style level. Earth-2 dick grayson should either take accept the mantle of Batman or create his own new identity either way he needed to stop being Robin years ago ,he simply outgrew that role.

Yeah Superman Family had a lot of features in one comic but one of the features is "Mr and Mrs Superman, it started in Action Comics 484 as a main story describing the marriage of Earth Two Superman and Lois during the mid 50s (and Lois had discovered that Supes is Clark). I wont spoil the main plot for you cause its quite intresting.
Then the feature was given a "proper" status in Superman and later famously moved to Superman Family where Clark and Lois thwarted villains together.

Excellent idea for a video! I feel stupid that I didn't make it. As an old guy, I automatically assume that everyone already knows everything that I know and more. One small clarification: in the story that presents Catwoman's death, Batman's retirement, and Huntress's origin, it is revealed that the photo Catwoman's old henchman used to blackmail her was, in fact, faked. She never actually killed anyone, which makes her death and the whole story seem all the more tragic.

I think there's something so cool about the sheer creativity that was allowed to flourish in these kinds of stories. There are a ton of modern comics I still really love and enjoy, but for decades, big-two editorial staff has been so afraid to allow characters to age up, grow, etc. I get that it may lead to less action oriented stories and quieter, more character driven stuff. I know that doesn't always sell as well, but I would really love to see more versions of these characters where they're allowed to grow older and we can see them at stages of life that extend beyond the age of ambiguous-thirties. I love stories like Kingdom Come, Spider-Man: Life Story, etc.

It honestly bothers me that we don't get many definitive endings for characters these days. Batman for instance is a character who you want to see have a strong payoff for everything he has done. You want to see how he impacted Gotham, rehabilitated villains, and which ones he couldn't save. Otherwise, his entire mission would have been for nothing.

I'm split on dead characters in comics. Some returns from death have been handled well, a lot haven't.
For me it depends on the quality of the story of a return, but even then there's been returns that were quality stories but having the character return cheapened their death and their being back didn't feel right.
Barry Allen's return and reclaiming the Flash mantle from Wally West was one of those returns that didn't feel right to me.
Learning the facts you shared here about why Dick wore a combo of his and Bruce's costumes as well as other continuity errors from that Convergence story really soured it for me. At least Helena and Dick didn't sell their love for each other to the devil to bring Bruce back, even just for one more day.

This is probably the closest we’ll ever get to a DC version of ultimate… and it came out like 60+ years ago.
In my pie in the sky scenario, we’d get a DC equivalent of the ultimate universe and have stories fully told by one writer, writers who don’t do things just for shock value. Then we could get things like Hal Jordan snapping and becoming evil without retconning it to be some dumb yellow creature or superman can really die. Maybe batman could retire and Tim drake takes over the mantle, ect. There’s basically endless source material.
Of course this is a pie in the sky scenario and in all likelihood, it’d probably meet the same fate as the marvel ultimate universe where it flops because writers just make things for shock value, it gets old, and they take the stuff people liked and shove it in the main universe.

I've always treated all DC and Marvel stories as canon, and I'm not just talking about the multiverse. Although, I could never really make sense of all the contradictions when explaining, in my head I could. It wasn't until Death Metal that Scott Snyder was able to put into comics how i had always intrepreted them.
You see, in Death Metal, Perpetua and the Darkest Night were both fighting for who gets to reshape the Omniverse, while the heroes fight in Earth 0 trying to destroy rhat Earth, essentially, trying to end things on their own terms. But Wonder Woman, with the help of Lobo, Darkseid, and Mobius, was able to show the Darkest Night and the heroes an alternative path. Instead of resetting everything, instead of endign everything, she showed them and became TRUTH.
After this, everything was canon, cause everything was true. And all true things can never truly end. Stories, archetypes, characters, was written, once ocnceived become TRUE. And even if DC or Marvel stops manking comics, the people who knew their characters eventually will, and they will never stop making these stories, for they are already true.
So instead of arguing about what is canon and what is not and what has closure and what does not, let us instead enjoy these unending stories for what they are: stories.

      How about " No."
The creator of Batman might vehemently disagree with some modern leftists view of Batman, and thus, it isn't a true batman, but a degenerate high quality rip off.

@@elderkyst2386It’s hilarious how you tried to equate a theory on canon to politics. And they say comicsgaters want less politics in their comics XD
      That aside:
Who created Hercules then? By your logic, everything we know about modern Greek or Norse or otherwise mythological heroes are cheap carbon copies because we don’t 100% know how the original stories made by the original people who thought of those myths go. We don’t know how many labours Hercules had to do, 10 or 12, and whether the 2 labours from the 12 count or not. There are a ton of origins for Greek gods that are hard to dispute.
What about something like Doctor Who then? The character doesn’t have a single or a fixed number of creators. He was created by writers room with a full season of his early stories written by multiple people. Fast forward to 60 years later, with development, the character is fairly different, written by different writers. Are the Doctor a cheap carbon copy?
What about the Burton, Nolan, or the most recent batman movies? Who are you or the original writer to say this is a cheap copy when those movies inspire or inspired a generation of people down the line?
My point is, as soon as the writer willingly gives up character rights to a company or another individual to let them make more stories of a specific character, that interpretation is no more invalid than the og.

@@vcom741 My response: The "Hercules" Point. We may not know who created Hercules, but we do know for a fact who created Batman. Entirely different situations here. This point was invalid.
The Doctor who point was interesting but, it was originally meant for teaching purposes with some story tossed in. The futuristic episodes focuses on engineering and mechanics, while the traveling to the past ones taught a little bit of history. Also, since he WAS created by multiple people, and we know WHO created him, as well as his cannon regenerative abilities, his situation is logical. Not mental gymnastics. It is going as it started. As intended. A very nice exception, but not breaking the rules of my logic. It is still going on as it's creator first imagined. Can't say the same for alot of modern comic and remakes.
As for your point on Batman. Once a company buys the rights to a character, AND the creator or one of their proteges aren't working on a series anymore, it's dead. But hey, companies love money and whatnot, so why not make fan fiction and sell it at large for a profit.
Well. Used to. People would rather buy manga nowadays, and honestly, can't blame them.

    • @vcom741
      @vcom741 2 года назад +4

@@elderkyst2386 But by your logic none of the interpretations of Hercules are valid then. They are not the original version by the original creator, henceforth, they are invalid.
Actually, by the time regeneration was introduced, little part of the og writing team remained. By this point, the show took an even harder hard sci fi turn which barely resembled the themes that were discussed under Verity Lambert as producer. William Hartnell himself was against the hard sci fi and increased violence of the show, so I do not believe it doesn’t break the rules of your logic. In addition, a lot of things considered standard by today, besides regeneration such as Time Lords, Gallifrey, Cybermen, Master, hell, pacifism of the main character, were not introduced long after 99% of original writing staff has left.
The batman point doesn’t answer the crux of my point. What about adaptations? They are interpretations meant for a completely different medium written by different people. Are they then not valid then?
By that logic every single comic book movie released today is just some fanfiction then lol.

No. As I stated, if the creators or their proteges leave, game over.
Their proteges can of course have proteges, and like I said, DR who is continuing as intended. It simply teaches moral lessons as well as time goes by. Still, as the creators intended. As their proteges intended. Different than absolutely no connection whatsoever to the original creators other than a name and some faceless company. Like most comic creators now. Not even proteges of proteges. Like I said, a very nice exception, but there ARE reasons for that. Evolving and adapting within a story is NOT fanfic, unlike taking a character and saying" Let's Rick and Morty that shit, multiverse and all, and call it true!".
Batman point: Again. Not valid for anything other than mindless self indulgence here. It's like the fight club quote." everything is a copy of a copy of a copy" you get the point. Invalid, and redundant.
