What a Name! It is interesting that your ancestors left the British isles just before the Jacobite rebellion of 1745. Many families that were politically aware, (and with means) fled in anticipation of the probable Jacobite uprising.
Regarding your name, Flint stands opposite a small and ancient village of Burton on the River Dee. Burton Quarry was the source of stone for Flint Castle which was ferried across the Dee at low tide on barges in the the 13th century. I wonder if that was your original family name or if they changed it when arriving in America for their own political safety and also a sentimental link to home? There are many records of this happening. I live near Flint and I give a wave to you across the Atlantic.

I have seen the town of Burton on some maps,but did not know the history behind it when I was doing research for my first book, 'The Life and Times of Robert Flint the Pioneer' I had some solid research of where Robert came from, now I see clearly my middle name Burton, and how it could have came from. @@DextraVisual The Flint ancestors came from Normandy to England during the Conquest, much later, they were part of Edward I's army that attempted to put down the Welsh rebellion along the way to Scotland. The source of the original Flint family that stayed in Wales comes from Matlock, England. My Great Grandfathers that marched through Wales on their way to Scotland had homes in Suffolk and York.

Quite accurate! I used to play in the castle as a kid, and we would run through those dungeon tunnels. That lower level in the turret next to the bridge is exactly as I remember.

I can't believe you made a historical recreation of my family's castle, this means a lot to me and my family who have been able to trace our ties directly to this place and still live by the same name
Are you suggesting that you are descended from somebody by the name of Flint who owned this castle at some point in time. If so, that would be interesting as there is no record of any of the Constables that held the castle since its construction actually having that name.
@@drinkingup2157 its named for being on Flintshire which was the home of my ancestors, so in some ways the area in general has connections. Its stuff I'm still learning about, and while my family did not live in the castle or anything, its something to still have some pride about the area my family is from, the castle is just the most interesting part to me
@@kristinaflint7837 You can't just claim it's your families castle if you're family never lived there and just happened to be from Flintshire. I'm from Flintshire myself and there are a lot more towns than just Flint. The castle was also built by the English. Can I assume you're American?

Just returned from North Wales and called in at Flint Castle for the 2nd year running. Only just seen this video and it's brilliant !
I wish I'd seen it before we went because I flew my FPV drone and would have loved to recreate this in modern times.

Fantastic to be able to go back in time.I had many happy years playing inside the castle and walking along the Marsh looking under rocks for crabs etc with my grandfather.Flint Castle is a very special place.

I visited the castle on a couple of occasions. A ruin is always sad to me but this video is really uplifting showing the magnificence that once was. Good news is since I last visited in 2001 a new viewing platform has been installed in one of the towers to appreciate the site more. Hopefully I will return to use it soon. Thumbs up to the maker of this video....really good.
Superb video illustrating how the town and Flint Castle once looked. A link to this video should be on the information boards at the castle, as without it it's difficult to really appreciate the historical context of what remains.

From a castle design-perspective, it's interesting to speculate how they thought about that separate independent tower near the entrance. Increased defence-capability, obviously. 👍
A second independent tower smacked down right in the middle of the village, would completed the picture. Connected with the first one through a secret underground passage, of course. 🤔😄

Great film. Shows what a superb defensive location Flint had. Very difficult (maybe impossible) to undermine, its own well for water and re-supply opportunities by boat.

DEXTRA VISUAL+ Was there two weeks ago, new stair in the North-East tower, how long did the video take you? I'm persuaded there was a Postern in the Great Tower, as in The Tower of Constance, Aigues-Mortes, has the same dimension's. Edward sailing from there on Crusade. It's an interesting castle for sure.
Great views from the top now. This and the 3d models from the other time periods were built up over ten months or so, evenings and weekends.

Cheers, yes this is made with Unity. There is one tower in the model that does not show the roof access door. I only noticed it was missing now you have pointed it out. :/
King Richard II was captured here by Henry Bollingbroke in1399, the castle is unique in Britain as having a external donjon tower.
this is the fourth castle that stayed up. the strongest castle in these isles. swap castle
Very impressive.
Most moats are dug out so I always wondered how they dealt with the foundations being undermined by the water in the most. Even building via a cassion in shallow natural water would have difficulties with the foundation. Also what did they do with the earth removed by digging the most, did they use it to fill in the outer walls to improve resistance to impacts, did they use them to build a mound ?
The castle was positioned on a strip of protruding bedrock and the moat was cut out of the stone itself where necessary. Experienced Canal engineers and masons were brought from France to assist with the construction of the moat and outer bailey earthworks.
Yes the material cut from the moat probably ended up as backfill elsewhere in the shaping of the outer bailey and ground levelling within the inner court.
@@DextraVisual Impressive, though I would imagine there must of been many less well constructed castles particularly those that did not survive to now. I guess the age old "location, location and location" certainly held true with this castle's construction.
