- I've driven the Vision AVTR, the concept Mercedes of the future! From having no steering wheel, to a design like nature inspired by Avatar the movie, it can even move sideways as you control it from a pad in the centre. Let's take a look at this futuristic car (or spaceship?!) and then experience a drive to see how it works.
Mercedes-Benz launched the Vision AVTR in partnership with Avatar to create a concept that would bring together humans, machine and nature and there are signs of this throughout. The design itself is something from another planet with elements of the Mercedes EQ visual identity, combined with unusual elements like the illuminated wheels and bionic scales over the rear.
Most intriguingly is how to drive the car, with a pad in the centre allowing it to accelerate, brake, turn in a traditional sense but also to rotate all 4 wheels in harmony to effectively move sideways, like crabbing. Inside it's a glasshouse with a dashboard created by projectors and exclusively using vegan materials, inspired by Avatar's director James Cameron, himself a vegan. As you walk up to the car it awakens and illuminates, the doors are motorised, and at the rear a light show visualises the speed with which it is driving. The wheels themselves are made from polyurethane, and the design derivated from the Woodsprites in the film.
Typically a concept car would not be something that would even run, let alone be possible to drive. To have such an exclusive opportunity to be 'behind the wheel' in a figurative sense and pilot the vehicle is something truly special, and very exciting to be able to share with you.

There will be plenty of classic options in future - a form of more extreme eco/autonomous driving will be just be another viable option. Classic driving enjoyment will not be going away any decade soon.

It is literally amazing to me how they're letting Shmee drive their very concept cars. Besides you, I have never known an outside man to even sit in one-off cars like these, let alone drive them.

every concept car ever has always been like this, sometimes they don't even run at all.
It's less about the driving and more about the design language and technology the company is planning towards.

This is the coolest car ever! I love what it stands for and the creativity involved to make it.

Sadly, I doubt we'll see that kind of doors on the roads soon, side impact protection concerns. But that looks dope!
My guess is automatic braking systems on transport negating crashes. These types of "cars" would have sensors all over them for automated driving and at some point the "old" cars people drive today will no longer be on the roads.

I miss the old days when cars had style and class. This thing looks like a 5yo kid. designed it.
I'm not impressed with much of what's available today. No seriousness to cars anymore.
My company had since late 90s an arrangement with GM for our company cars, when they came out with that auto stop start feature that couldn't be turned off we switched everything to VW Passat. Roomy, comfortable, great on gas, looks respectable enough for our needs and is not expensive. Best of all no auto start stop feature.
Even the new 2021 MB S class disappointed me. The interior is designed for a different crowd, a younger crowd that most likely isn't in the tax bracket to truly afford one. It's too TikTok for me with that giant screen. Bad enough you can't get a spare tire anymore. Took the class right out of the S class with the new interior.
Too many cars are becoming IPad's with wheels. Tech overkill.

But controlling a machine with a joystick isn't that futuristic. It is actually old. And if this was a good idea... Elon Musk would have done it already. So this is fun, but never going to be reality. It is so incredibly unsafe.

Gotta think about it, 10-15 years ago cars looking like the AVTR were smiled at "They never gonna drive looking like this", and the Concepts of the olden days really never drove looking like that, but thanks to electric drive advancing rapidly they could.
