I dare say that this is the best version . The slower tempo of the first mvt just differentiate other versions . The fact that they put much more weight and power to fill up the timing makes it more emotional and dark . Svetlanov is a genius , first time I heard him on piano , he is beyond impressive . Kogan and the principle Cello of USSR are also great . But Svetlanov is the leader : his has the most difficult part and the most important instrument of the trio , and he is a conductor too :P
What a magnificent performance! The sound and balance in the recording are also remarkable. Svetlanov as a pianist is phenomenal! Thank you for sharing this.
Dhyan Vegan -- True, but the 2nd Concerto happens to SOAR over ALL other music....Everywhere! Hear Richter, Palvanov, Prats, Weissenberg and, yes, Lang-Lang!
The pianist has incredible chops. Was writing whilst listening to this and 11:10 snapped me out of my reverie - the split hands just afterwards are insane.
+stenka razin and +Igor Chystokletov, I agree that this is the best recorded performance I've found thus far as well! It does not replace my recent opportunity to hear it live, however. This is so deeply moving, reflective of such musical maturity and pathos for a 20 year old composer.
Thank you for this...you can hear Rachmaninoff's pain at losing his friend Tchaikovsky. What a beautiful elegy for Tchaikovsky and even more proof, if we needed it, as to the virtuosity and supreme talent of Sergei Rachmaninoff!
One of the most profound piece of chamber music i've heard, this is insanely good, i've never really been into Rachmaninoff too much, but this makes me want to learn more about his works
agree with you. although I am not allowed to enjoy fully. Which makes sense: after all, in a few seconds ... in just a few seconds, I feel more joy then it's bearable.... sometimes. So, that must be the reason!....
"Sergei Rachmaninoff's Trio élégiaque No. 2 in D minor, Op. 9 is a piano trio which he began composing on 25 October 1893 and completed on 15 December that year. It was written in memory of Tchaikovsky, and was inscribed with the dedication "In Memory of a Great Artist".[1] It "was first performed in Moscow on 31 January 1894 by Rachmaninoff himself, the violinist Julius Conus, and the cellist Anatoli Brandukov." wkpd
It was this Beauty, with all of the ads that RUclips constantly threw at me, which finally beat the shit out of me so thoroughly that I purchased RUclips Red.
Tchaikovsky, his mentor, teacher and friend, passed away. Rachmaninoff, shattered, cloistered himself away and obsessively worked on this trio until it was completed. Letters sent to him remained unanswered, including those from his girlfriend. Finally he emerged with this masterpiece.
This is without doubt the finest performance available full stop ! Listened to many both on here and on CD & SACD ..........the power. the sorrow....the passion.........it is simply wonderfull !
pay a few Euro's a month and you will get any music without adds. Nobody should expect that this enourmous reservoir of great music can be opened up for free.
Izak, Very good piece of music, worth listening! Had a chance to come across those musicians in an old movie. Let me think and come back to you if I made no mistake. Emily Y6
This is indeed a very long work. I al m nor sure that the insipration of Rachmaninov is strong enough to fill all this time in a quite convicing way. B Nevertheless, this trio should not be forgotten; it is a quite intersting testimony of a vary late postrmaontic music chamber, and perhaps ilustates one of the trends that the riussian music could have adopted ithe Stalinism had not introduced the so-called 'socialist realism' dicataorship. Imagine a free country where both Rachmaninov, Glazunow, Roslavets, Prokofiev, Chostakovich could have written along their genius and insiration without constraints
@@matthewzisi300 Hi Matthew I perfectly know. He left the country through Helsinki at that was quite complex and even dangerous. I do ot see any contradiction between what you write and what I wrote. I am developing a sort of utopia, a dream. Rachmaninov left Russia because of the October 17 revolution. Stalin was a ' (perverted) "product" of that revolution. My utopia applied to a Russia without the October 17 revolution. . In such a case, Rachmaninov would not have left Russia. He would have stayed in his beautiful countryside house with his car (did you know that he was one of the first Russian to have got a car?).
@@gerardbegni2806 There is a contradiction....between the true reality and your deluded self. See my avi. Stalin gave the world one of the happiest and most joyful moments in human history when the Hammer and Sickle was raised over the Reichstag in 1945. 42 million Communists were butchered by the Nazis in WW2. I was named after my Dad's brother who was killed in Italy. Be thankful you got to enjoy your music....and stop telling lies about Stalin.
This is hands down the best piece of classical music ive heard. You can hear the pain he went trough in order to make this. It is truly a masterpiece

I must admit it is the most intimidating!
I have to agree. I've always treasured Oistrakh and co, but this is really something. My admiration for Kogan just keeps on growing.
What a magnificent performance! The sound and balance in the recording are also remarkable.
Svetlanov as a pianist is phenomenal!
Thank you for sharing this.
could not agree more my dear Ed! How cool to find your comment here!
This performance proves that Svetlanov is not only a good conductor, but also a great pianist. Awesome rendition of the trio!!!
Every time I hear this piece, it brings me close to tears. What a beautiful performance...

Rachmaninov at his very best. Simply brilliant. I wonder why the Piano Concerto 2 is so famous and not this exquisite piece.
Well it's quite dark and heavy.
Yes, and these are only two of the many adjectives you could find.
So is the concerto?
Dhyan Vegan -- True, but the 2nd Concerto happens to SOAR over ALL other music....Everywhere! Hear Richter, Palvanov, Prats, Weissenberg and, yes, Lang-Lang!
Generally speaking, concertos are more "famous" than trios
The pianist has incredible chops. Was writing whilst listening to this and 11:10 snapped me out of my reverie - the split hands just afterwards are insane.
The best performance of Rachmaninov's 2nd Trio on youtube.
Svetlanov is great!
+stenka razin True, had he lived, Tchaikovsky The Giant would have been delighted and amused by Rachmaninoff, Gliere, etc

all the sadness, pathos, liricism of the slavic soul...
Love Tchaikovsky, particularly his sacred, love Rachmaninov.
Rachmaninov has not less number of Sacred Music! 💝
What a lovely piece and a committed soulful recording. Thanks for sharing this great chamber work
4:38 the strings sounds like the violin concerto op. 35 tchaicovsky
This was written soon after Tchaikovsky died, it was in his memory
4:38 sounds like from violin concerto op 35
Svetlanov is beautiful piano player
That trio really had caught the spirit of the piece.
gracias
This just sings, like all of Rachmaninov's music.
What manner of twisted horror did Rachmaninoff go through to write something so dreadfully beautiful?!
Tchaikovsky died. That was the reason he wrote this.
