Clonmel Travellers Grievances

The travellers have lived in the Halting Site on the Heywood roads for thirty five years. The halting site was build with a few bays consisting parking space for a mobile home and a smaller house structure with kitchen, bathroom facilities and other service facilities, provided by the travellers. Presently it is overcrowded. The council have failed to meet the existing and projected accommodation needs of Travellers as required under the (Traveller Accommodation Act 1998). This year the electricity was cut off for weeks before it was fixed.
The travellers have occupied the adjoining land with their ponies for fifty years. They expected that the land would be used to house their children and grandchildren. Presently the government are building a migrant camp with no consultation with the public.
The government seem to have no problem accommodating illegal and unvetted economic migrants at taxpayers expense but fail to house the 14,000 Irish that are homeless and the travellers. The travellers have been evicted from their lands where SISK are building a migrant camp, that they object to and boycott.
The travellers fear for the future safety of their women and children by the housing of unvetted and illegal economic migrants to be housed beside them and in the town given the disproportional number and unprovoked brutal violent crimes committed by migrants that is reported in the media almost daily. There is little confidence in the Gardai and judicial system. Waiting to see if the Gardai will prosecute the SISK worker who recently had on his person and produced a knife in front of a young girl and a 14 year old traveller boy, contrary to Section 9 & 11 of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act 1990. Each crime is punishable by a fine and prison sentence. A journalist was assaulted causing harm by a delivery driver and knock to the ground on his back and head.
The travellers are boycotting those aiding their eviction and sacrificing the future safety of their women and children for money.
