Traditional SOUTHERN New Year Supper! | Pork Chops, Collard Greens, Black Eyed Peas, and Cornbread

- Happy New Year Family!!! Today we're making our traditional New Year's Day Supper! Pork Chops (I usually fry them, but I went with baked this year), cornbread, collard greens, black eyed peas, and mashed potatoes!
Recipes:
Pork Chops:
For the Pork Cops I just baked them with some the Sweet Preacher rub at 350 for around 20 minutes, until they were cooked through.
Cornbread:
I just use the recipe on the back of the Martha White or White Lilly Cornmeal mix. 😁👍
Instant Pot Dry Beans:
2 pounds dry peas or beans
8-10 cups water, I fill it to the max fill line on the Instant Pot
Whatever you want to use for seasoning, I used bacon drippings. I forgot I had the fatback until later! 😂
Cover seal and cook on high pressure for 45-60 minutes, I went with 60 since I had a little over 2 pounds this time. Allow a slow release of the pressure for 30 minutes, then release the rest.
Collard Greens:
I just wash and chop the collards and then boil them in water with fatback, you can use bacon, ham, salt pork, or just salt and pepper. 😁👍
I bring them to a boil and then turn to simmer for at least 20 minutes, but they can cook for much longer than that. It just depends on how you like them.
Mashed potatoes:
8-10 russet potatoes
salt
black pepper
2 tablespoons mayo
1/2 stick of butter
1/4 cup milk
Wash, peel, and cut up potatoes. Boil until tender. Transfer to a large bowl and add in all other ingredients. Mash and stir until everything is combined.

I made pork chops & sauerkraut, mashed potatoes & corn ! After being home for 2 weeks, I start back tomorrow (5am comes way too early!) I work in a cookie/baking chocolate/ candy bar factory & believe it or not, we are already making Easter candy bars🐇 Goodnight Moss family & friends.
It is great you give the kids books at Christmas. I am 57 and still get them from my parents. Now it by way of audiobooks but my parents instilled in me a love of reading. Your little ones sound like that too 🥰

I’m 75 so I need help to get one large tree & two smaller- I paid teenagers to do it all & vacuum the house- it was worth it all! They were my grandchildren 🥰

I am so excited!!!! I thought within my 50 years, the New Year Tradition fizzled. Growing up, my mama, her mama and great granny has told us to cook, Greens, Black-eyed peas with and meat. (Myself with the meat, I love Smoked Brisket.") - God Bless you for keeping this tradition alive. There has been so much hate crime and we need all the luck for 2023...

My decorations came down the day after Christmas. I have no kids. I spend the days between Christmas and new years giving my home a good deep cleaning. Then I start the year with a thoroughly clean house.
Hello Falon, in the good old days-20+ years ago I would have my decorations done by bedtime New Years Day so everything was back to "normal" before I went back to work. Not any more, enjoying them for another week. I have washed one of my Christmas tablecloths, step one! Thank you for always explaining how you cook.

I had the blackeye peas .collards .pork ,fried fish for New Yeas and Pecan pie. I take down the decorations around the 10th which is my sons birthday . Happy New year 2023 to everyone !!

Red bird is good. I had a yellow robe many years ago and my great niece said “Aunt Ginger looks like big bird” we laughed hard. That same great niece is now in her early 20’s. 🤣
I took all our Christmas stuff down yesterday.About 2 weeks is all I can stand of it.

My Mom always made cabbage on New Years Day and she would put a quarter in it,i told my husband to get black eyed peas,pork,which he forgot but he got the cabbage and corn bread!

Growing up, I loved "Homer Price" by Robert McCloskey and then he wrote "Centerburg Tales". Those were some funny books. You might look into those.

I’ve never cooked collard greens and I don’t remember ever tasting them. I’ve never cooked or tasted fatback either. Maybe I will do both in 2023. Jonah’s books sound fun to read. When my son was about Jonah’s age he liked books called “choose your own adventure” and they had several endings. I love Amelia Bedeelia! How fun for Sissy! And Manley loves books already. Last year, my next-door neighbor rudely asked me if I was going to take my decorations down, when it was only about the 28th. I had chuckled, and told him I planned to keep them up till Epiphany. Well, same neighbor, so I feel self-conscious about it. I have the outside ones unplugged now, and plan to bring them in tomorrow. Your dinner looked great! Amelia Badelia books are wonderful. May I recommend Judy Blume. She is a great author. Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing is my favourite book of hers.
Dinner looked so good. I'm with you Falon, I'll eat them but Black-eyed Peas are not my favorite either. Manley absolutely cracked me up when he said "You look like a red bird". Our Christmas typically stays up till Jan 6th, but this year I think it will come down the 5th for us since hubby can help that day and I can’t do alone at this point

I meant to take our Christmas stuff down today but I’ve been taking it easy since we’ve all been a bit sick. My kiddo had it worst of us all. He’s doing better though. Back to a crazy work week with tons of Overtime needed for a project I’m on thankfully I work from home so I can do some home stuff on breaks and lunch.
Supper looks yummy! And my Christmas stuff is down except for the outside decorations. My oldest loved the I survived series. We don’t start back to school till next Monday. My oldest and I have birth days this week!! So we always take off! Love y’all goodnight!!

I put onion, ham bone or our homemade cajun sausage, can rotel (you would need 2 cans) bacon grease, garlic, Slap Ya Mama cajun seasoning salt n pepper! Try it sometime! Really delicious!
But of course I’m a Louisiana girl now so we like everything doctored up! 😁

We leave ours our until January 7th after Ephinany. We take down any Santa stuff on December 27th usually but leave up our tree and our lights and other decorations considering we celebrate the 12 days of Christmas from Christmas day until January 6th. Just keeping the magic going 💚🤍❤

Not sure I mentioned it before (it gets confusing LOL) but in Belgium we take down all of it after Epiphany; that day a lot of children come by your house to sing in the NY, it's kind of like Halloween but for the NY. You give them what you have, couple cents or candy. After that most people take their decorations down.

Hey Mama Bird! Manley is so cute. I love how the older kids play along with him. Yes, our Christmas things are still up. We plan to take them down this coming weekend. I don't see any reason to rush taking them down. I don't like pinto beans as much as black eye peas. We never had pintos growing up but my husband's family did. Maybe I just haven't figured out the best way to cook them. I like them find in a soup or something but alone I just can't love them yet. But I'm trying. Thank you for sharing.
