    The first thing you see when driving up to the Life Center of Nashoba Valley, a nursing home in Massachusetts, is a pair of llamas. Around the country, homes like this are using animals-chickens and llamas as well as dogs and fish-in their therapy programs, brightening up their residents' days. Travis the llama is the star at Nashoba Valley, ambling through the hallways every few weeks and ""giving kisses."" The rest of his time is spent with the other llama, VJ, in a large pasture, where residents can return the animals' visits with their families or on their own.
    Animal-therapy programs are said to decrease agitation in many nursing home residents and to increase participation. The animals are sometimes able to bring the residents out of their shells in ways that previously seemed impossible.

      Whenever I feel down and I hate everything, the one thing that still brings me joy is animals. They're simply amazing. Doggies in the street, my kitties being goofballs (zoomies). Animal therapy at hospitals-and nursing homes especially since the residents are there for so long-is truly a godsend. When I get a dog I'm totally going to do this... Plus, I'm getting an English bulldog, and they have such a... well, characteristic look! So I bet she will be a huge hit; almost (well) as much as a llama! :)

    I'm absolutely positive that animal therapy is profoundly useful to people in care homes and hospices, especially for those experiencing the later stages of dementia. Touch is one of the most significant senses in this situation (as is hearing, with music), when almost everything else is lost cognitively. All of this was true for my mother. I would sit with her and apply the hand cream by 'Youth Dew', her favourite scent, and stroke and soothe it in. She liked that, although by then she had entirely forgotten who I was. Robert, UK.

    • @zedek_
      @zedek_ 8 лет назад +4

      +Klara Christine
      Don't overdo it now. They can also be cruel and callous. Unless you find it magical when an orca flings around the seal it caught, while it's still alive, tormenting the seal until it finally eats it. I suppose that _is_ fairly majestic. Or when a male bear beats a mother bear and consumes her children so that she will go into heat again and he can mate with her. Magical love.

    • @TheRealFallenAngel
      @TheRealFallenAngel 8 лет назад +1

      +Klara Christine animals eat animals. so only some of them are magical by your theory

    • @grytlappar
      @grytlappar 7 лет назад +3

      +Zedek - Are they any crueler than we are? I would say no. They hunt to eat-and then they're done. What about us, who want our meat cheaper and cheaper (I remember when I was growing up in the 70's, a roasted chicken was a Sunday dinner!), meaning we abuse the animals in their tiny cages where they step on each other and can't even turn around. And we do this for greed, by calculation, intelligent animals that we are. You'd think we'd at least have the decency to treat the animals well before we kill them. But noo... So who is worse? There's no competition. We are.

    • @grytlappar
      @grytlappar 7 лет назад +1

      PS. You're a moron.

    • @zedek_
      @zedek_ 7 лет назад +1

      The question of who is worse is completely irrelevant to the discussion at hand.
      -The initial premise was that animals are magical. That they are *love*.
      -My response was "don't overdo it now," and pointing out that they can be cruel. Not just amoral with regards to their survival, but actively cruel.
      Your comment has no bearing on anything I've said.
      _"They hunt to eat-and then they're done. "_
      Objectively and demonstrably untrue. "Surplus killing" is a fact of life with many carnivores; including wolves, bears, leopards, coyotes, etc.
      Additionally, on a _related_ note, animals kill each other constantly without any intention of eating the meat. In many species, among mammals of all stripes, the males will try to kill the offspring of other males; some examples include zebras, bears, orangutans. Cassowaries are some of the most aggressive animals in the world, and will avidly chase, or hunt down, and kill any somewhat large animal it sees in its territory, despite being herbaceous. Hippos are also notorious for this.
      I'll refrain from sophomoric insults. You have a good day.
